2018 Audi A3: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 45 owner complaints for the 2018 Audi A3, and air bags is the group named most often[1][2]. The car also has 7 recalls on file, so check that each one has been done before you buy or keep it[3].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 45 complaints with NHTSA for this model year[1]. One mentions a crash, none mention a fire, two mention injuries and none mention deaths[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component.
- Air bags (24 complaints). One of the 24 mentions a crash and an injury[2]. In the sample of complaints we read, owners describe waiting for parts for the passenger air bag sensor recall, seeing warning lights, and in a few cases a problem that came back after repair[2].
- Electrical system (5 complaints). One mentions an injury[6]. The sample we read is mixed. Owners describe a car that stalled with a start/stop warning, a dead battery and alternator, sudden braking with no object ahead, and waits for recall parts[6].
- Fuel/propulsion system (5 complaints). None mention a crash, fire or injury[7]. Owners in the sample describe stalling or hesitation, a failed fuel pump, and fuel trouble after recall work[7].
- Power train (4 complaints). None mention a crash, fire or injury[8]. Owners in the sample describe a car that would not move or lost power while driving, and some link it to transmission control[8].
Tires, engine and unknown or other each have 4 complaints, and exterior lighting has 2[9][10][11][12]. With counts this small, we do not treat any of these as a pattern.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 7 recalls for this model year[3]. Many of them also cover other Audi and Volkswagen models and other model years[13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. Newest first.
- Fuel pump seal (24V110). Filed 2024-02-14[13]. A seal on a pump inside the fuel tank has a problem, so fuel can flow into the evaporative emissions system and may leak out of the charcoal canister. A leak near an ignition source raises the risk of fire. Dealers replace the suction pump, free of charge. It replaces recall 16V-647, and cars that had the earlier repair need the new one[13].
- Passenger air bag sensor (21V198). Filed 2021-03-22[14]. The system that detects a passenger may malfunction and switch off the passenger air bag when the seat is occupied. That raises the risk of injury in a crash. Dealers replace the sensor mat and update the control module, free of charge[14].
- Passenger air bag sensor, connector (19V474). Filed 2019-06-19[15]. A poor electrical contact may make the same system wrongly detect a fault and turn off the passenger air bag. That raises the risk of injury in a crash. Dealers replace the connector and reroute the cable, free of charge[15].
- Rear seat head restraint pins (19V095). Filed 2019-02-13[16]. The center rear head restraint may be missing its latching pins. In a crash it could come loose and hurt someone. Dealers inspect it and replace any restraint missing pins, free of charge[16].
- Fuel hose connector (18V863). Filed 2018-12-05[17]. A quick connector on the fuel hose in the engine bay may come off the supply line and leak fuel. A leak there raises the risk of fire. Dealers secure the connection as needed, free of charge[17].
- Rear seat head restraint sleeves (18V803). Filed 2018-11-14[18]. Guide sleeves on the rear seat frame may be welded incorrectly, which can leave the head restraints less stable in a crash. Dealers inspect the welds and replace the seat frame as necessary, free of charge[18].
- Engine stall software (17V508). Filed 2017-08-16[19]. The engine software may misread the engine turning over at start-up as knocking and adjust the fuel mix, which can stall the engine. A stall raises the risk of a crash. Dealers reprogram the software, free of charge[19].
Fuel economy
EPA lists five 2018 A3 versions[4][20][21][22][23]. The four gasoline versions below use regular fuel and a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo engine[4][20][21][22].
| Version | City / Hwy / Combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| A3, front-wheel drive[4] | 26 / 35 / 29 | $2,300 |
| A3 Cabriolet, front-wheel drive[20] | 25 / 33 / 28 | $2,400 |
| A3 quattro, all-wheel drive[22] | 24 / 31 / 27 | $2,500 |
| A3 Cabriolet quattro, all-wheel drive[21] | 22 / 30 / 25 | $2,700 |
The A3 e-tron has a 1.4L 4-cylinder turbo, uses premium fuel and electricity, and is rated 36 MPGe combined with 400 miles of range[23]. EPA's fuel costs use its current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
Safety ratings
The 4 DR versions, front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, both earned 5 stars overall from NHTSA[5][24]. Both got 4 stars for frontal crash, 5 stars for side crash and 4 stars for rollover, with a rollover risk of 10.9%[5][24]. NHTSA lists the C AWD, C FWD and 5 HB FWD versions as not rated[25][26][27].
Engine and size
EPA test cars list two engines. The 1.4L 4-cylinder is rated 150 hp[28]. The 2.0L 4-cylinder is rated 186 to 220 hp depending on version[29].
Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.

NHTSA lists 45 complaints and 7 recalls for 2018[3]. Only 2015 also has 7 recalls, and no listed year has more[3]. On complaints, 2015 has 180, 2016 has 121 and 2017 has 71, all higher than 2018[3]. The 2019 model year has 15 complaints and 4 recalls[3].
These counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so treat them as a rough guide within the A3 line only[3].
Should you buy a used 2018 Audi A3?
The complaint count is lower than for the 2015 to 2017 model years, but the recall count is as high as any year listed[3]. The passenger air bag sensor, fuel leak and engine stall recalls touch safety, so confirm by VIN that each has been completed[13][14][15][17][19]. In complaints we read, some owners describe waits for parts and problems after repair on the air bag recall[2]. Ask for service records that show the recall work. Our data does not cover repair costs or reliability scores, so a pre-purchase inspection is a sensible step.
