2017 Audi A8: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 8 owner complaints on file for the 2017 Audi A8[1]. The model year also has 3 recalls, so check that the recall work was done on any car you consider[2].
Reported problems
Owners filed 8 complaints with NHTSA[1]. One mentions a crash, and none mention a fire, an injury or a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component.
- Engine: 2 complaints, 1 of them mentioning a crash[4]. Complaints in the sample we read describe a start-stop system that would not restart the car at a stop, and a paid crankcase ventilation repair that the owner wanted Audi to cover.
- Brakes: 2 complaints[5].
- Speed control: 2 complaints[6].
- Power train: 1 complaint, mentioning a crash[7].
- Forward collision avoidance: 1 complaint[8].
- Fuel/propulsion system, tires, and unknown or other: 1 complaint each[9][10][11].
In the sample we read, the brakes, speed control and forward collision avoidance complaints describe the same kind of event. The adaptive cruise control and brake guard warnings showed as disabled, and a failed camera diagnosis appears in the sample. The complaints also describe a dispute with the dealer about who pays for the repair[5][6][8]. The counts are small, so treat them as examples of what owners report and not as a measure of how reliable the car is.
Recalls
NHTSA lists these recalls in our data, newest first.
- Turbocharger oil strainer (22V178). Dated 2022-03-23[12], covering certain 2013-2017 A8 and other Audi models[12]. The oil strainer on the turbocharger can clog, so the bearings wear from poor lubrication. Worn bearings can damage the turbocharger or break its shaft, which can stall the engine and raise crash risk. Dealers replace the strainer and change the oil, free of charge[12].
- Hood seal (20V397). Dated 2020-07-07, covering certain 2013-2018 S8 and A8 vehicles[13]. A seal around the engine compartment can work loose and touch hot engine parts, which raises fire risk. Dealers fit a retaining plate so the seal stays in place[13].
- Fuel rails (19V035). Dated 2019-01-16, covering certain 2015-2018 A8 vehicles among other models[14]. The left and right fuel rails can leak fuel. A leak near an ignition source raises fire risk. Dealers replace both rails, free of charge[14].
Fuel economy
EPA lists two engines for this model year, and both use premium fuel and all-wheel drive.
EPA estimates annual fuel cost at $3,750 for each[3][15]. That estimate uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
Engine and size
The EPA test car list shows 333 hp for the 3.0L 6-cylinder[16] and 435 hp for the 4.0L 8-cylinder[17].

Some other model years have more complaints, and most of the ones listed here also have more recalls. 2013 has 49 complaints and 6 recalls, 2015 has 31 and 5, and 2014 has 18 and 5[2]. 2016 has 11 complaints and 4 recalls[2]. 2019 has 14 complaints and the same 3 recalls as 2017[2].
Some years have fewer complaints. 2018 has 0 complaints and 2 recalls[2]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so they are only a rough guide.
Should you buy a used 2017 Audi A8?
The complaint count is lower than for 2013, 2014 and 2015[2], and no complaint mentions a fire, injury or death[1]. The three recalls cover a turbocharger part, a hood seal and fuel rails, so confirm each one was done before you buy[12][13][14]. Ask whether the driver assistance camera has ever been repaired, since a complaint in our sample describes warnings about it[5][6]. Our data does not cover price, reliability ratings, safety ratings or repair costs.
