2025 BMW 5 Series: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has only 2 owner complaints on file for the 2025 5 Series[1]. The car does have 5 recalls, so check each one before you buy or keep it[2].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 2 owner complaints for this model year, and none mention a crash, a fire, an injury or a death[1]. These are unverified reports from owners, and one complaint can name several parts of the car.
Four component groups each have one complaint:
- Wheels[4]. An owner describes the tire pressure shown by the car's monitor as different from the pressure on the door label. That left the owner unsure which number to follow.
- Brakes[5]. An owner describes a stability system fault alert. The car then rolled on a slope with no parking brake holding it, and the steering would not turn. The owner called it a life-threatening safety issue.
- Electrical system[6] and steering[7]. These two groups carry the same report as the brakes complaint.
With so few reports, we cannot call any of this a pattern.
Recalls
NHTSA lists five recalls for this model year, newest first. Check your VIN on NHTSA.gov to see which apply to your car.
- Integrated brake (26V422). Filed 2026-07-01 and covering 428 potentially affected units[8]. The brake system may fail to give normal power assist, or the anti-lock and stability systems may not work properly. That can lengthen stopping distance and raise the risk of a crash. The plan is to inspect the system and replace it if needed, at no charge. Owner letters were expected on August 21, 2026[8]. Cars already repaired under 24V104 need the new remedy[8].
- Remedy pending
Starter-generator connection (25V202). Filed 2025-04-01, with 4,557 potentially affected units[9]. A wire connection may come loose, which can stall the engine. The wiring may also overheat, which raises fire risk. Dealers will inspect and replace parts as needed. The remedy is not yet available, and second owner letters will go out once it is[9]. - Air bag control unit (24V870). Filed 2024-11-19 and covering 3 units[10]. The unit may have been built incorrectly, so air bags might not deploy as intended in a crash. Dealers will replace it. These vehicles were not sold from dealer inventory, so no owner letters will be mailed[10].
- Steering spindle (24V714). Filed 2024-09-25, with 982 potentially affected units[11]. The spindle may break, which means much more steering effort and a higher crash risk. Dealers will replace the double universal joint. Letters were mailed on November 22, 2024[11].
- Integrated brake (24V104). Filed 2024-02-12 and covering 266,716 units across several brands and model years[12]. The risk is the same brake assist and stability system problem described above. Dealers will replace the integrated brake system, and letters went out between June and December 2024[12].
Fuel economy
EPA ratings for the sedans in our data:
| Version | City / Highway / Combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 530i, rear-wheel drive[3] | 28 / 35 / 31 | $2,650 |
| 530i xDrive, all-wheel drive[13] | 27 / 35 / 30 | $2,750 |
| 540i xDrive, all-wheel drive[14] | 26 / 33 / 28 | $2,950 |
The 550e xDrive is rated 24 MPGe combined with 420 miles of range[15]. The EPA fuel cost estimate uses current EPA fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
Engine and size
The EPA test list shows 255 hp for the 2.0L four-cylinder[16]. The 3.0L six-cylinder is rated 308 to 375 hp depending on version[17].

NHTSA shows 2 complaints for 2025[2]. That is the lowest count of any 5 Series model year that has complaints on file[2]. The next lowest is 2023 with 9, and 2024 has 18[2].
Recalls tell a different story. 2025 has 5 recalls[2]. Several years have more, including 2024 with 7 and 2020 and 2021 with 8 each[2]. The model years 2026 and 2027 show no complaints and no recalls[2].
Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold. A low count can also mean fewer owners have had time to report.
Should you buy a used 2025 5 Series?
Owner complaints are very few, and none report injuries[1]. The recall list is the bigger item, with two brake recalls and a steering spindle recall[8][11][12]. The starter-generator remedy is not yet available, so ask a dealer about it before you buy[9]. Use your VIN to confirm which recalls are open and completed. Treat the low complaint count as a good sign, not a guarantee.
