2015 BMW X5: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 152 owner complaints on file for the 2015 BMW X5[1], and the engine group is the biggest part of them. Three diesel recalls involve parts that can cause a fire or an engine stall, so diesel buyers should check recall status first[2][3][4].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 152 complaints for this model year[1]. Six mention a crash, 7 a fire, 6 injuries and 1 a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component group.
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Engine[7] | 51 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[8] | 30 |
| Fuel system, diesel[9] | 20 |
| Unknown or other[10] | 19 |
| Air bags[11] | 14 |
| Power train[12] | 14 |
| Electrical system[13] | 13 |
| Steering[14] | 7 |
The engine group is the largest. Those complaints include 2 crashes, 4 fires and 2 injuries, with a median mileage at failure of 99,000[7]. In the sample of engine complaints we read, owners describe waiting for parts for the EGR cooler recall and worrying about fire risk in the meantime[7]. A few single reports mention wiring damage, exhaust fumes, oil leaks and hesitation[7].
For the fuel/propulsion group, owners in our sample describe the high-pressure fuel pump failing. Some report the car losing power or stalling, with metal debris reaching the rest of the fuel system. A few texts describe injector failures instead[8]. The median mileage at failure for this group is 78,830[8]. It has no crashes, fires or injuries[8].
The diesel fuel system group has 20 complaints and 1 fire[9]. In the sample we read, owners describe getting the EGR recall notice and being unable to get the repair because parts were not available. Some also describe coolant loss, warning lights or knocking[9].
In the air bag group, owners describe dashboard warnings about the air bag or restraint system. Some texts in our sample describe air bags that did not deploy in a crash[11]. This group has 3 crashes and 4 injuries, with a median mileage at failure of 28,000[11].
The sample texts are a small slice of each group. They show what owners describe, not how often it happens.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 6 recalls in our data[5]. Several of them also cover other BMW models, so the unit counts below are not X5 counts[15]. Newest first:
- EGR cooler (21V907). Issued 2021-11-19 for diesel X5 xDrive35d models[2]. The EGR cooler can leak inside the engine. Coolant then mixes with soot, which can smolder and melt the intake manifold. The risk is fire[2]. The fix is a new EGR cooler, a check of the manifold and a new manifold if needed, free of charge[2]. It also replaces the earlier fix from 18V755[2]. The recall says the remedy was expected in June 2022 and that owner letters were mailed on July 6, 2022[2]. Our facts do not say whether parts are in stock today, so ask a dealer.
- High-pressure fuel pump (21V586). Issued 2021-07-29, covering 11,216 units across several BMW diesels including the X5 xDrive35d[3]. The pump may fail, which can stall the engine while driving and raise crash risk[3]. Dealers replace the pump free of charge[3]. Owner letters went out on January 14, 2022[3].
- EGR cooler, first recall (18V755). Issued 2018-10-25, covering 44,368 units across several BMW diesels[4]. Same leak and fire risk as 21V907. Dealers inspect the cooler and replace it as necessary, and replace the intake manifold if a leak already happened, free of charge[4]. The recall began May 13, 2019[4].
- Driver air bag inflator (16V683). Issued 2016-09-21, covering 3,606 units across several BMW models, with the X5 xDrive35i, sDrive35i and xDrive50i named[15]. The inflator may have been welded badly. In a crash, the housing could separate and metal could strike occupants, with a risk of serious injury or death[15]. Dealers replace the driver front air bag free of charge. The recall began November 1, 2016[15].
- Head protection air bag (15V147). Issued 2015-03-13, covering 46 units built in set date ranges[16]. The head protection air bag may not be firmly attached to its inflator, so it could inflate too little in a crash[16]. Dealers replace the Head Protection System free of charge. The recall began June 24, 2015[16].
- Rear seat belt mount (14V650). Issued 2014-10-17, covering 11 units built September 12 to September 21, 2014, with the optional rear comfort seat[17]. The left rear belt attachment may not be welded well enough, so it could break in a crash[17]. Dealers replace the left rear seat frame free of charge. The recall began in November 2014[17].
Some recalls apply only to certain build dates or equipment, so check the VIN with NHTSA or a dealer.
Fuel economy
EPA ratings differ a lot by engine. The diesel has the highest combined rating and the 4.4L the lowest[18][6].
| Version | City / highway / combined MPG | Est. annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| sDrive35i, rear-wheel drive, premium[19] | 19 / 27 / 22 | $3,750 |
| xDrive35i, all-wheel drive, premium[20] | 18 / 26 / 21 | $3,900 |
| xDrive50i, all-wheel drive, premium[18] | 15 / 22 / 17 | $4,850 |
| xDrive35d, all-wheel drive, diesel[6] | 24 / 31 / 27 | $3,550 |
EPA's fuel cost estimates use its current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
Engine and size
The 3.0L 6-cylinder turbo is rated at 255 to 300 hp, depending on version[21]. The 4.4L 8-cylinder turbo is rated at 443 hp[22].
Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models. Length is 193 in, width 76 in, height 69 in and wheelbase 115 in for the versions listed[23][24][25].

These counts are not adjusted for sales, so they show roughly where 2015 sits. They do not prove one year is more reliable.
Should you buy a used 2015 X5?
The 2015 X5 sits in the middle of its neighbors for complaint counts[5]. The clearest risks in our data are on the diesel, where three recalls involve fire risk or an engine stall[2][3][4]. If you look at an xDrive35d, ask for proof that recalls 21V907 and 21V586 were done, and that any earlier 18V755 work was redone under 21V907[2][3][4]., and ask a dealer whether parts are in stock for the EGR fix. For any version, check the VIN for open air bag and seat recalls[15][16][17]. Gas models are rated at 17 to 22 MPG combined and the diesel at 27[19][20][18][6].
