2000 Chevrolet Blazer: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 589 owner complaints on file for the 2000 Blazer, and suspension is the group named most often in the data we have[1][2]. The model year also has 4 recalls, so check that the repairs were done[3].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 589 owner complaints[1]. Of those, 46 mention a crash, 7 a fire, 32 injuries and 2 deaths[1]. These are unverified reports, and one complaint can name more than one part.
The groups named most often:
| Component group | Complaints | Median mileage at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Suspension[2] | 100 | 50,000 |
| Power train[5] | 84 | 67,000 |
| Exterior lighting[6] | 79 | 80,000 |
| Engine[7] | 64 | 70,000 |
| Brakes[8] | 62 | 75,820 |
| Electrical system[9] | 49 | 84,402 |
| Seats[10] | 49 | 50,810 |
| Fuel system, gasoline[11] | 46 | 55,000 |
Among the groups listed, brakes have the most crashes, 9 among 62 complaints[8]. Electrical complaints mention the most fires, 3 among 49[9].
We also read a small sample of complaint texts for four groups. It is not a count of all owners.
- Suspension[2]. In a sample of 12 texts, 4 describe vibration, wobble or shudder. Another 4 describe unstable handling in curves or a rollover[2].
- Power train[5]. In a sample of 12, 5 describe a manual transmission slipping out of gear, mostly first gear. 3 describe rough shifting[5].
- Exterior lighting[6]. In a sample of 12, 7 describe headlights flickering or dimming. 4 describe brake lights not working, and some of those mention the multifunction switch[6].
- Engine[7]. In a sample of 12, 7 describe stalling or the engine shutting off while driving. Some of these also mention loss of steering control.
Some texts in the sample repeat, so treat these counts as a rough picture only.
Recalls
NHTSA shows four recalls for this model year. Newest first:
- Brake light switch (08V231). Issued 2008-05-21 and covers 5,862 vehicles[12]. It expanded an earlier recall. The multifunction switch can fail so the stop lamps and rear hazard lamps stop working. Other drivers would not see you braking, which could lead to a crash. Dealers replace the hazard switch carrier[12].
- Hazard light switch (01V364). Issued 2001-12-03 and covers 506,377 vehicles[13]. It is the same switch problem and the same risk. Dealers replace the hazard switch carrier, and the fix is free[13].
- Seat belt buckles (00V228). Issued 2000-08-07 and covers 156,305 vehicles[14]. The buckle base on some belts was not heat treated correctly and fails a federal strength test. In a crash an occupant may not be held properly. Dealers check the buckle date codes and replace buckles if needed[14].
- Brake pipe union (99V220). Issued 1999-08-11 and covers 3,947 two-wheel-drive trucks[15]. A brake pipe nut may not have been seated well, which could allow a fluid leak and a longer stopping distance. Dealers inspect the union and install a new one if needed[15].
A recall does not tell you whether a given Blazer was repaired. Ask for service records or have a dealer check by VIN.
Fuel economy
EPA lists four versions, all with a 4.3L 6-cylinder engine and regular fuel:
| Version | City / Hwy / Combined MPG | EPA annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 2WD, Automatic 4-spd[16] | 15 / 20 / 17 | $3,950 |
| 2WD, Manual 5-spd[4] | 15 / 21 / 18 | $3,700 |
| 4WD, Automatic 4-spd[17] | 14 / 18 / 16 | $4,200 |
| 4WD, Manual 5-spd[18] | 13 / 16 / 15 | $4,450 |
The fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA lists no 5-Star Safety Rating for the 2000 Blazer[19]. The model was not rated.
Engine and size
The EPA entries list a 4.3L 6-cylinder engine[16]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.
| Version | Length | Width | Height | Wheelbase | Curb weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2-door 4x2[20] | 177 in | 68 in | 65 in | 100 in | 3,664 lb |
| 2-door 4x4[21] | 177 in | 68 in | 65 in | 100 in | 3,920 lb |
| 4-door 4x2[22] | 183 in | 68 in | 64 in | 107 in | 3,818 lb |
| 4-door 4x4[23] | 183 in | 68 in | 64 in | 107 in | 4,125 lb |
A 2-door 4x4 ZR2 version is also listed with a length of 177 in and a wheelbase of 100 in[24].

NHTSA shows 589 complaints and 4 recalls for 2000[3]. Four years have more complaints: 1995 with 1,224, 1996 with 1,153, 1997 with 768 and 1998 with 716[3]. The 1999 year has 436 complaints and 0 recalls, and 2001 has 326 complaints and 3 recalls[3].
On recalls, 1995 and 1996 each have 6, 2024 has 5, and 1997 has 4 like 2000[3]. Counts are not adjusted for how many were sold, so read them as a rough guide only.
Should you buy a used 2000 Blazer?
The complaint file is large at 589 reports, and suspension, power train, lighting, engine and brakes lead it[1][2][5][6][7][8]. Owners in our sample describe flickering lights, stalling and, on manuals, slipping out of gear[5][6][7]. Before buying, confirm the switch, seat belt and brake pipe recalls were done[12][13][14][15]. Test drive for vibration, handling and stalling, and plan for fuel costs of $3,700 to $4,450 a year by EPA estimates[16][4][17][18]. This page does not cover reliability beyond these reports, so a pre-purchase inspection is sensible.
