2014 Chevrolet Camaro: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 188 owner complaints on file for the 2014 Camaro, and the electrical system is the group named most often[1][2]. An ignition key recall covers 2014 Camaros built through May 23, 2014, so check that it was done[3].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 188 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Ten mention a crash, 4 a fire and 14 an injury[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component group, so the counts below overlap.
| Component group | Complaints | Crashes | Injuries |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical system[2] | 99 | 3 | 2 |
| Unknown or other[7] | 40 | 2 | 2 |
| Steering[8] | 32 | 3 | 5 |
| Engine[9] | 23 | 1 | 2 |
| Exterior lighting[10] | 17 | 0 | 0 |
| Air bags[11] | 16 | 5 | 7 |
| Power train[12] | 15 | 1 | 2 |
| Brakes[13] | 10 | 3 | 5 |
Electrical is the largest group, with a median mileage at failure of 46,250[2]. Steering is at 26,656 miles[8]. Engine is at 14,445 miles[9].
We read a small sample of complaint texts in four groups. This is what owners describe, not a measure of how common anything is.
- Electrical. In 4 of 12 electrical texts the car shut off or lost power while driving[2]. In 5 of 12 the owner mentions the ignition key recall, and 3 of those describe trouble getting the repair done, such as no notice or parts on back order[2].
- Engine. In 8 of 12 engine texts owners describe the engine stalling or cutting off, at speed or when stopped[9].
- Steering. In 4 of 12 steering texts the engine cut off and power steering and brakes went with it[8]. In 4 of 12 the key would not come out of the ignition[8]. In 3 of 12 owners describe steering rack, pump or feel problems[8].
- Exterior lighting. In 11 of 12 texts in this group, the radio or stereo shut off, glitched or popped[10]. In 4 of 12 the turn signals acted up along with it[10].
Air bags had only 16 complaints but 5 crashes and 7 injuries[11]. Brakes had 10 complaints with 3 crashes and 5 injuries[13]. Counts this small tell us what was reported, not how often it happens.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 3 recalls for the 2014 Camaro[4]. Newest first:
- Steering fasteners (14V409). Filed 2014-07-02[14]. Some fasteners holding steering parts and nearby joints were not tightened properly. Parts could separate and the driver could lose steering, which raises crash risk. Dealers check the torque and correct it free of charge. The recall lists 106 potentially affected vehicles across the Camaro and three other GM models[14].
- Ignition key (14V346). Filed 2014-06-20[3]. A driver's knee can knock the key out of the run position. The engine then turns off, the air bags may not deploy in a crash, and power steering and power brakes can be lost. The recall covers 464,712 vehicles, all 2010 to 2014 Camaros built December 3, 2008 to May 23, 2014[3]. Dealers remove the key blade from the original flip key and give two new keys and two key rings per key. The recall began August 25, 2014[3]. Until it is done, GM says to adjust the seat and steering column so the knee clears the key[3].
- Air bag warning label (13V463). Filed 2013-09-26[15]. The warning label on the sun visor of some Camaro Coupes built June 9 to September 6, 2013 can peel off[15]. Drivers and passengers may then miss the air bag warning, and the cars do not meet a federal safety standard. Owners are told how to check the visor sticker, and dealers replace the visor if needed. This covers 18,941 vehicles[15].
Ask a Chevrolet dealer to check your VIN for open recalls.
Fuel economy
EPA lists eight versions of the 2014 Camaro, all rear-wheel drive. Combined mileage runs from 14 to 22 MPG[5][16]. Annual fuel cost runs from $3,050 to $5,850[5][16]. The cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from 2014.
| Engine | Transmission | Fuel | City / hwy / combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.6L 6-cyl[5] | Automatic 6-spd | Regular | 19 / 29 / 22 | $3,050 |
| 3.6L 6-cyl[17] | Automatic (S6) | Regular | 18 / 27 / 21 | $3,200 |
| 3.6L 6-cyl[18] | Manual 6-spd | Regular | 17 / 27 / 20 | $3,350 |
| 6.2L 8-cyl[19] | Manual 6-spd | Regular | 16 / 24 / 19 | $3,550 |
| 6.2L 8-cyl[20] | Automatic (S6) | Regular | 15 / 24 / 18 | $3,700 |
| 6.2L 8-cyl[21] | Manual 6-spd | Premium | 14 / 19 / 16 | $5,150 |
| 7.0L 8-cyl[22] | Manual 6-spd | Premium | 13 / 19 / 15 | $5,500 |
| 6.2L 8-cyl[16] | Automatic (S6) | Premium | 12 / 18 / 14 | $5,850 |
The 6.2L engine appears with both regular and premium fuel, and the premium versions have the lowest MPG and the highest yearly cost in the list[21][16].
Safety ratings
In NHTSA 5-Star testing, the 2-door rear-wheel-drive Camaro earned 5 stars overall, 5 for frontal crash, 5 for side crash and 5 for rollover[6]. Its rollover risk is listed at 8.7%[6]. A second listing, labeled C RWD, also shows 5 stars for rollover and 8.7% risk[23].
Engine and size
EPA lists three engines for this model year[24][25][26].
- 3.6L 6-cylinder: rated 304 hp[24].
- 6.2L 8-cylinder: rated 400 to 550 hp depending on version[25].
- 7.0L 8-cylinder: rated 505 hp[26].
Dimensions are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models. Every listed version is 191 in long, 76 in wide and 54 in tall, with a 112 in wheelbase[27][28]. Curb weight is what changes.

NHTSA has 188 complaints and 3 recalls for the 2014 model year[4]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so read them as rough signals only.
Among the years in our data, 2010 has the most complaints at 295, followed by 1995 at 216, 2015 at 206, 2011 at 194 and 2017 at 189[4]. That puts 2014 sixth of the years listed[4]. 2013 is almost level at 187 complaints and also has 3 recalls[4]. 2016 has 141 complaints and 1 recall[4]. 2012 and 2021 have the most recalls, 4 each, while 2014 ties 2013, 2017 and 2020 at 3[4].
Should you buy a used 2014 Camaro?
The record is mixed. Crash ratings are 5 stars[6], but the complaint file leans toward electrical issues, and owners in the sample we read describe engines cutting off[2][9]. Make sure the ignition key recall 14V346 has been done, since the risk it describes includes loss of engine power and air bags that may not deploy[3]. Also ask about 14V409 and 13V463[14][15]. Fuel cost depends heavily on the engine and fuel, from $3,050 to $5,850 a year by EPA's estimate[5][16]. A pre-purchase inspection and a VIN recall check are sensible for any used car of this age.
