2008 Chevrolet Express Passenger: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 41 owner complaints for the 2008 Express Passenger, and brakes are the biggest group[1][2]. It also has 11 recalls[3]. Seven of them are for wheelchair lifts, which apply only to vans fitted with those lifts[4][5][6].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 41 owner complaints for the 2008 Express Passenger[1]. One of them mentions a crash. None mention a fire, an injury or a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component.
| Component group | Complaints | Median miles at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Brakes[2] | 11 | 52,000 |
| Electrical system[8] | 5 | 73,000 |
| Power train[9] | 5 | 40,000 |
| Structure[10] | 5 | 65,000 |
| Air bags[11] | 4 | not listed |
| Tires[12] | 3 | not listed |
| Fuel/propulsion system[13] | 3 | not listed |
| Traction control system[14] | 2 | not listed |
Brakes. In the 11 brake complaints we read, 4 describe brake fluid problems such as a rusted brake line, a rubbing hose, a leaking master cylinder or a line that needed repair. Three describe shaking when braking or rotors and pads replaced without curing the problem. Two describe ABS or stability warning lights, or ABS behavior that changed the pedal feel or steering[2].
Electrical. In a sample of 5 complaints, 3 describe the dash, speedometer or lights dropping out while driving[8].
Power train. All 5 complaints we read describe transmission trouble, such as not shifting, losing power or disengaging while driving[9].
Structure. In a sample of 5 complaints, 4 describe door, hinge or latch trouble[10].
The samples are small. They show what owners describe, not how often a problem happens.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 11 recalls for this model year[3]. Seven of them cover wheelchair lifts, so those apply only to vans fitted with such lifts[4][5][6]. Newest first:
- Wheelchair lift plates (14V706, 2014-11-05).[4] Covers 34 units with certain Ricon lifts.[4] The platform side plate may crack and the platform could fall out when the door opens, which could injure the lift operator. The fix is added support bumpers, and any platform that has started cracking is replaced free[4].
- Wheelchair lift roll stop (12V169, 2012-04-17).[5] Covers 34 units with certain Braun lifts.[5] The roll stop latches on the outer barrier can bend or slip out of line, so a wheelchair rider could roll over it and fall. Braun dealers repair it free[5].
- Remedy pending
Wheelchair lift software (10V205, 2010-05-13).[6] Covers 133 units with certain Ricon lifts.[6] A software fault can let the lift keep rising past floor level, which could tip a person over. The record says a software fix was still under investigation, so a full remedy was not yet available. Until then owners get a bulletin and a training DVD at no cost[6]. - Air conditioner heater unit (09V456, 2009-11-19).[15] Covers 269 service vehicles with certain Carrier ceiling units.[15] The heater element may be defective and could make smoke or sparks, which could cause a fire. Carrier repairs it free[15].
- Wheelchair lift stow interlock (09V272, 2009-07-06).[16] Covers 185 units with Ricon lifts.[16] The sensor that detects weight on the platform was not sensitive enough, so the lift could stow with a person still on it. The lifts are corrected free[16].
- Wheelchair lift threshold warning (09V270, 2009-07-06).[17] Covers 185 units with Ricon lifts.[17] The warning system may miss a person standing in one spot of the threshold area, and the lift could move and injure the user. The lifts are corrected free[17].
- Wheelchair lift stow interlock (08V569, 2008-10-24).[18] Covers 42 units.[18] It is the same weight sensor problem, with the same risk of the lift stowing on a person. The lifts are corrected free[18].
- Wheelchair lift threshold warning (08V568, 2008-10-24).[19] Covers 42 units.[19] It is the same threshold warning problem as 09V270. The lifts are corrected free[19].
- Transfer case (08V340, 2008-07-28).[20] Covers 151 all wheel drive vehicles.[20] Some have a wrong part that can cause early failure of a drive chain. If the chain breaks, Park may not hold the vehicle, and it could roll on a slope. Dealers check the date code and replace the transfer case if needed[20].
- Frame rail and fuel tank (08V315, 2008-07-14).[21] Covers 567 cutaway vehicles with a 139 inch wheelbase.[21] The driver's side frame rail may be wider than specified and touch the fuel tank housing. That could cause a leak and, with a spark, a fire. Dealers check the clearance and rework the rail if needed, free[21].
- Transmission damage (08V313, 2008-07-11).[22] Lists 6,390 potentially affected units. The defect description names 2,481 G-cutaway fleet vans with a 6.0L V8 and 4L80E transmission[22]. The transmission may be damaged by first gear engagement at highway speed and then fail to send power, which could strand the van on a highway. Dealers reprogram the transmission and engine control modules free[22].
Fuel economy
EPA gives the same numbers for all four entries it lists: 12 city, 16 highway and 14 combined MPG[7][23][24][25]. The estimated annual fuel cost is $4,800 for each[7][23][24][25], based on EPA's current fuel price assumptions and not on prices when the van was new[7][23][24][25].
- Express 1500/2500 2WD, 5.3L 8-cyl, Automatic 4-spd, Regular, rear-wheel drive[7]
- Express 1500 AWD, 5.3L 8-cyl, Automatic 4-spd, Regular, 4-wheel or all-wheel drive[23]
- Express 1500/2500 2WD, 5.3L 8-cyl, Automatic 4-spd, Gasoline or E85, rear-wheel drive[24]
- Express 1500 AWD, 5.3L 8-cyl, Automatic 4-spd, Gasoline or E85, 4-wheel or all-wheel drive[25]
Size
These are Canadian-market specifications from Transport Canada, so they can differ slightly from US vans. Length, width, height and wheelbase are in inches, and weight is in pounds[26].

NHTSA's counts by model year give a rough picture. Complaints and recalls are not adjusted for how many vans were sold[3].
Should you buy a used 2008 Express Passenger?
The complaint count of 41 sits in the middle of the range for this model, which runs from 8 to 101 by year, and brakes lead it with 11 of 41[1][2][3]. Owners in the sample describe brake line, hose and master cylinder problems, so have a mechanic look at the brake system before buying. Seven of the 11 recalls concern wheelchair lifts, so they matter only if the van has one[4][5][6]. Ask for the VIN to be checked for the transfer case, fuel tank and transmission recalls, and confirm that any lift work was done[20][21][22]. At 14 combined MPG and about $4,800 a year in fuel by EPA's estimate, running costs are worth budgeting[7].
