2015 Chevrolet Silverado: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 1,186 owner complaints on file for the 2015 Silverado, and brakes are the biggest group[1][2]. The model year also has 18 recalls, so check every one against the exact truck before you buy[3].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 1,186 complaints with NHTSA for this model year[1]. Of those, 61 mention a crash, 16 a fire and 35 an injury, and 1 reports a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports. One complaint can name several components, and the counts are not adjusted for how many trucks were sold.
| Component group | Complaints | Crashes | Fires | Injuries |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brakes[2] | 382 | 26 | 0 | 6 |
| Steering[6] | 174 | 8 | 0 | 5 |
| Electrical system[7] | 173 | 4 | 12 | 3 |
| Engine[8] | 159 | 5 | 1 | 1 |
| Power train[9] | 149 | 3 | 0 | 2 |
| Air bags[10] | 72 | 24 | 1 | 25 |
Brakes lead the list. The median mileage at failure for brake complaints is 56,500[2]. Steering complaints have a median of 49,000 miles[6]. Electrical complaints have 12 fires, the most of any group in the table[7].
Air bags have far fewer complaints than brakes, yet 24 of those 72 mention a crash and 25 mention an injury[10].
We read a small sample of the complaint texts for four groups. These are only examples and do not show how common a problem is.
- Brakes. In 2 of the 12 brake complaints we read, owners describe a hard pedal or lost stopping power that a dealer traced to the brake vacuum pump[2]. In 2 others, owners describe front brakes that wore out or stuck early[2].
- Steering. In 4 of 12 steering complaints, owners describe vibration through the steering wheel and cabin at highway speed[6]. In 5 of 12, owners describe steering that stuck, felt hard to turn or lost power assist[6].
- Electrical. In 5 of 12 electrical complaints, owners describe the truck shutting off or losing power while driving[7].
- Engine. In 4 of 12 engine complaints, owners describe stalling or shutting off while driving[8].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 18 recalls for the 2015 Silverado[3]. Many of them cover other GM trucks and SUVs too, but Many of them cover other GM trucks and SUVs too. The 2015 Silverado is named in each one, but some cover only certain engines, build dates or drive types, so check each against the exact truck. Newest first: Newest first:
- Roof-rail air bag inflator (21V504). The inflator end cap can come off, or the inflator wall can burst. Parts can then fly into the cabin and hurt people. The recall covers 410,019 vehicles[11]. Dealers will replace the left and right roof-rail air bag modules for free. The record says owners will get a second notice when the remedy is available. Our data does not show whether it is available now, so ask a Chevrolet dealer.
- Driver seat belt pretensioner (21V245). A wrong replacement cable part from an earlier repair can fatigue and break, which weakens the driver's belt. Dealers replace the lap pretensioner for free. The recall covers 2,568 vehicles[12].
- Roof-rail air bag inflator (20V736). This was the earlier version of the air bag inflator recall. It was replaced by 21V504, and affected trucks are repaired under the newer number[13].
- Wheel speed sensor and braking (19V761). If a wheel speed sensor fails at 41 to 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the truck may brake on its own[14]. It applies to trucks with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive[14]. Dealers reprogram the brake control module for free[14].
- Brake vacuum pump (19V645). Vacuum from the pump can drop over time, so the brakes need more force and stopping distance grows. Dealers reprogram the brake control module for free. The recall covers 3,456,719 vehicles[15].
- Electric power steering (18V586). Steering assist can drop out for a moment and then return suddenly, which makes steering hard at low speeds. Dealers update the module software for free[16].
- Brake pedal pivot nut (18V578). The nut can loosen and leave the pedal loose or unable to work. Dealers add adhesive and tighten the nut more. The record notes that these trucks need this extra fix even if they had recall 16V069[17].
- Seat belt pretensioner cable (18V291). The driver's belt cable can fatigue and break. Dealers replace the cable and seat side shield for free[18].
- Air bag module software (17V437). Some trucks did not get the full software update from recall 16V651, so the same air bag and pretensioner risk remains. Dealers reflash the software and replace the module if an air bag has deployed[19].
- Air bag module software (16V651). Certain driving conditions can make the air bag control module software run a diagnostic test, and during that test the front air bags and belt pretensioners would not deploy in a crash. The recall covers 3,640,162 vehicles[20]. Dealers reflash the software for free[20].
- Seat belt tensioner cable (16V209). The driver can slide over the cable when getting in, and it can fatigue and break. Dealers modify the truck and replace damaged cables for free[21].
- Brake pedal pivot nut (16V069). The same loose nut problem as 18V578. It affects 430,771 vehicles[22]. Dealers add adhesive and tighten the nut[22].
- Ignition lock (15V640). The ignition lock actuator can bind and the key can stick in Start, and it can then snap back and cut engine, steering and braking power. Dealers replace the lock housing for free[23].
- Rear axle shaft (14V819). An axle shaft with improper heat treatment can fracture, and the rear wheel can separate. Dealers inspect and replace bad axles. The recall covers only 152 vehicles[24].
- Electric power steering motor (14V719). The module can cause a sudden loss of power steering assist. Dealers replace the assist motor kit for free. The recall covers 679 vehicles[25].
- Seat hook bracket (14V446). An incomplete weld can let the front seats come loose in a crash. Dealers inspect the weld and replace the lower seat track if needed[26].
- Transfer case (14V374). An electrical short can shift the transfer case into neutral, so a parked truck without the parking brake could roll away. Dealers reprogram the control module for free[27].
- Exhaust heat (14V007). Overheated exhaust parts can melt nearby plastic and cause an engine fire. It applies to trucks with a 4.3L or 5.3L engine[28]. Dealers reprogram the engine control module for free[28].
Our data does not say which individual trucks are still unrepaired.
Fuel economy
EPA lists several configurations for this model year. The combined ratings run from 17 to 20 mpg[4][29].
| Engine and drive | City / highway / combined mpg | EPA annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 4.3L 6-cyl, 2WD[4] | 18 / 24 / 20 | $3,350 |
| 4.3L 6-cyl, 4WD[30] | 17 / 22 / 19 | $3,550 |
| 5.3L 8-cyl, 2WD[31] | 16 / 23 / 19 | $3,550 |
| 5.3L 8-cyl, 4WD[32] | 16 / 22 / 18 | $3,700 |
| 6.2L 8-cyl, 2WD[33] | 15 / 21 / 17 | $3,950 |
| 6.2L 8-cyl, 4WD[34] | 15 / 21 / 17 | $3,950 |
The cab chassis versions are rated lower, at 17 to 18 combined mpg[29][35][36]. The cost figures use EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the truck was new. The 5.3L ratings are for both gasoline or E85 and regular gasoline[31][37].
Safety ratings
NHTSA's 5-Star ratings give 5 stars overall, 5 stars in frontal crash and 5 stars in side crash[5]. Rollover gets 4 stars[5]. The listed rollover risk is 17.4% for 4WD versions[5][38][39] and 17.9% for rear-wheel drive versions[40][41][42]. All six body and drive combinations listed have the same star ratings[5][38][39][40][41][42].
Ratings do not cover the recalls above. Check those separately.

Should you buy a used 2015 Silverado?
The record is heavy on recalls and complaints, and brakes, steering and electrical issues stand out[1][2][6][7]. Dealers do the repairs for free in most of the recalls above, but the roof-rail air bag recall 21V504 mentions a second owner notice when the remedy is available, and our data does not show its current status, so ask any seller whether it was done[11]. Run the VIN through NHTSA, and ask for proof that the brake, steering and seat belt recalls were done. On a test drive, pay attention to braking, steering feel at highway speed and any stalling. Complaints are unverified, and our data cannot tell you how any single truck has held up.
