2025 Chevrolet Silverado: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 120 owner complaints on file for the 2025 Silverado[1]. It also has one recall, which covers certain Silverado EV work trucks[2].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 120 complaints with NHTSA[1]. Four mention a crash, four a fire and three an injury. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component.
The largest groups by component:
- Engine: 56 complaints, 3 with a fire, median mileage at failure 9,000[6].
- Electrical system: 32 complaints, median mileage at failure 3,000[7].
- Power train: 22 complaints[8].
- Unknown or other: 15 complaints[9].
- Forward collision avoidance: 14 complaints, 3 with a crash[10].
Brakes (7) and speed control (7) have fewer complaints[11][12]. Fuel and propulsion has 8[13].
We also read a small sample of the complaint texts. This is not a count of all owners, so treat it as a flavor of what people report.
- Engine: owners describe stalling, limp mode or a sudden loss of power on the road. Some say a dealer told them the engine needed replacing, and a few mention waiting on parts[6].
- Electrical: owners describe screens or the instrument cluster freezing or going blank, and warning lights that come on at random[7].
- Power train: owners describe trouble shifting, including no reverse gear and jerking[8].
- Forward collision avoidance: owners describe the automatic braking stopping the truck when it should not. Others say the warnings did not react when they expected[10].
Recalls
NHTSA lists one recall for this model year[3].
- Pedestrian alert sound (24V937). Announced December 18, 2024[2]. GM recalled 46 potentially affected Silverado EV work trucks[2]. The sound that warns pedestrians may not be loud enough, so the trucks do not meet the federal minimum sound rule for electric vehicles. The risk is that people nearby may not hear the truck coming. The fix is a software update to the body control module, done by dealers at no cost to the owner. Owner letters were mailed January 22, 2025[2].
This recall names Silverado EV work trucks, so check the VIN of any specific truck.
Fuel economy
The EPA lists many versions of the 2025 Silverado. Here is a sample of gas and diesel versions with combined MPG and the EPA's estimated annual fuel cost. The cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the truck was new.
| Version | Combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 2WD, 3.0L 6-cyl turbo diesel[4] | 26 | $3,700 |
| 2WD, 2.7L 4-cyl turbo[14] | 19 | $3,550 |
| 2WD, 5.3L 8-cyl[15] | 18 | $3,700 |
| 4WD, 3.0L 6-cyl turbo diesel[16] | 24 | $4,000 |
| 4WD, 5.3L 8-cyl[17] | 17 | $3,950 |
| 4WD, 6.2L 8-cyl[18] | 17 | $4,850 |
| 4WD ZR2, 6.2L 8-cyl[19] | 15 | $5,500 |
The Silverado EV versions rate 64 to 70 MPGe combined[20][21][22][23][24][25]. Their EPA range runs from 282 miles to 492 miles, depending on the version[20][25].
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 2025 Silverado 5 stars overall on every version it rates[5][26][27][28][29][30][31]. Rollover is 4 stars on all of them, with a rollover risk of 19.1% on most versions, 19.8% on PU/CC 4WD and 11.1% on the PU/CC AWD version listed under the Silverado EV[5][27][31]. Frontal crash is 5 stars, except PU/CC 4WD and PU/CC RWD at 4 stars[27][29].
Engine and size
EPA lists these horsepower ratings for test vehicles:
- 2.7L 4-cylinder: 310 hp[32]
- 3.0L 6-cylinder: 305 hp[33]
- 5.3L 8-cylinder: 355 hp[34]
- 6.2L 8-cylinder: 420 hp[35]
- Electric motor: 510 to 645 hp, depending on version[36]
Sizes below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US trucks.

NHTSA's table covers Silverado model years 1999 to 2026. The 2025 model year has 120 complaints and 1 recall, the lowest of both counts in that table[3]. The next lowest complaint count is 126 for 2026, and the next lowest recall count is 3[3].
For scale, 1999 has the most complaints at 2,247, and 2014 has the most recalls at 19[3]. These counts are not adjusted for how many trucks were sold, so they are a rough guide only.
Should you buy a used 2025 Silverado?
The 2025 Silverado has the fewest complaints and recalls of any model year in NHTSA's table, though the counts are not adjusted for sales[3]. Engine is still the largest complaint group at 56, and in a sample of complaints we read, owners describe stalling and engine replacements[6]. The one recall covers Silverado EV work trucks and has a software fix at no cost[2]. Fuel economy varies a lot by engine, from 15 to 26 combined MPG among the gas and diesel versions above[4][19]. Check the exact engine, and run the VIN for open recalls before you decide.
