2019 Chrysler Pacifica: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2019 Pacifica has 361 NHTSA owner complaints and 9 recalls on file[1][2]. Electrical, engine and power train complaints lead, and the recalls include plug-in hybrid fire risks, stalling and rearview camera faults, so check your VIN before you buy or keep one[3][4][5].
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 361 owner complaints on file for the 2019 Pacifica[1]. Of those, 11 mention a crash, 3 a fire and 3 an injury, and none report a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several parts of the car, so the group counts below overlap and do not add up to the total.
| Component group | Complaints | Crashes | Median miles at failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical system[3] | 120 | 2 | 16,186 |
| Engine[4] | 99 | 0 | 23,400 |
| Power train[5] | 89 | 2 | 20,000 |
| Unknown or other[8] | 65 | 1 | 3,000 |
| Brakes[9] | 59 | 5 | 35,700 |
| Steering[10] | 46 | 2 | 3,000 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[11] | 14 | 0 | 1,800 |
| Speed control[12] | 13 | 2 | n/a |
Engine and power train. In a sample of 12 engine complaints we read, 8 describe the van stalling, shutting off or losing power while driving[4]. In a sample of 12 power train complaints, 7 describe a sudden shutdown or loss of drive, and 3 describe jerky or hesitant shifting[5]. Owners in these samples also mention warning messages such as "stop safely" before the van shut off[5]. A smaller number describe a shudder when the stop/start system restarts the engine[4].
Electrical system. This is the largest group at 120 complaints, with 3 fires[3]. In a sample of 12 we read, 3 describe the radio, navigation or backup camera screen freezing or failing, and 5 describe a no start, shutdown or warning message[3]. One describes an overheating battery while the van was charging[3].
Brakes. The 59 brake complaints include 5 crashes, the most of any group[9]. In a sample of 12 we read, 7 describe a hard pedal, a hissing sound and weak braking[9]. Some owners in the sample said the van rolled when they tried to stop[9].
Crashes and fires are reported across several groups, but each group's count is small, so treat them as signals to check rather than proof of a pattern[3][9].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 9 recalls for the 2019 Pacifica[2]. Several apply only to certain versions, such as plug-in hybrids or vans with specific options, so check your VIN on NHTSA.gov. Newest first:
- Rearview camera not displaying (26V327). Contamination or bad programming in the central vision module can stop the rearview image from showing, which breaks the federal rear visibility rule and raises crash risk[13]. It covers 16 vehicles[13]. The fix is a software update or a new module at no cost, but the record says owner letters are expected to start July 16, 2026, so ask a dealer whether the repair is available for your VIN[13].
- Wheelchair restraints (25V876). This was issued by Rollx Vans for vans fitted with certain wheelchair restraints, and it names the Pacifica among many models[14]. The retractors may not lock, so a wheelchair could move during a trip[14]. Rollx will inspect and replace retractors as needed at no cost[14]. It affects only vans with those restraints, and the record does not give model years[14].
- Plug-in hybrid battery fire (24V538). On 2019 to 2021 Pacifica Plug-In Hybrids, the battery pack may start a fire when parked, even with the ignition off[15]. Owners are advised not to charge and to park outside away from buildings until repaired[15]. Dealers update battery control software and inspect or replace the battery pack at no cost[15].
- Hybrid wiring connector (23V010). On 2017 to 2023 Pacifica Plug-In Hybrids, an internal transmission wiring connector may short and shut the engine off unexpectedly[16]. That can cut drive power and raise crash risk[16]. Dealers update software at no cost[16].
- Rearview image stays on (20V191). A software error can leave the rearview image on screen after the van leaves reverse, which can distract the driver[17]. It covers 319,610 vehicles across several models[17]. Dealers update the radio display software at no cost, and owners could also choose an over-the-air update[17].
- 12 volt post overheating (20V334). On 2017 to 2020 Pacifica Plug-In Hybrids, a 12 volt isolator post behind the driver's seat can develop high resistance and overheat, which raises fire risk with the vehicle on or off[18]. The record says the final repair was still under development, with an interim dealer inspection and a loaner vehicle if the joint is compromised[18]. Until a final repair, owners were told not to park these vehicles inside buildings or near other vehicles[18]. Ask a dealer about the current status for your VIN.
- Rearview image stays on, 2018 to 2019 (19V886). Pacifica vans with an 8.4 inch radio display, 360 degree camera and seat back screens can keep showing the rearview image after leaving reverse[19]. Dealers update the radio software at no cost[19].
- Battery ground with stop/start (19V348). On 2017 to 2019 Pacifica vans with engine stop/start, a loose battery ground may cause an intermittent loss of power steering assist or a stall, which raises crash risk[20]. It covers 198,731 vehicles[20]. Dealers inspect, clean and reassemble the ground connection at no cost[20].
- Powertrain control module (18V524). A voltage regulator chip in the module may fail and cause a stall or a no start[21]. The notice lists many Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Fiat models, and it names the 2018 Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid, yet it is on file for the 2019 model year in our data, so check your VIN[21]. Dealers replace the module at no cost[21].
Fuel economy
EPA rates the gas Pacifica with the 3.6L 6-cylinder and Automatic 9-spd at 22 MPG combined[6][22]. One listing shows 18 city and 28 highway, and the other 19 city and 28 highway[6][22]. EPA estimates annual fuel cost at $3,050 for both[6][22].
The Pacifica Hybrid, with an automatic (variable gear ratios) on regular gas and electricity, is rated 30 MPGe combined with 520 miles of range[23]. EPA fuel costs use current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the front-wheel-drive van 5 stars overall[7]. Frontal and side crash ratings are 5 stars each, and the rollover rating is 4 stars with an 11.6% rollover risk[7].
Engine and size
The EPA Test Car List shows a 3.6L 6-cylinder rated 220 to 287 hp, depending on version[24]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US vans[25].

NHTSA has 361 complaints and 9 recalls on file for 2019[2]. Among the 16 Pacifica model years in our data, seven have more complaints than 2019: 2017 (1,616), 2005 (1,244), 2018 (1,113), 2004 (896), 2006 (726), 2021 (401) and 2007 (380)[2]. Of the years from 2017 on, only 2017, 2018 and 2021 have more[2].
On recalls, six years list more than 2019: 2017 (17), 2018 (16), 2023 (14), 2024 (11), 2022 (10) and 2025 (10)[2]. The neighbors 2018 and 2020 show 16 recalls with 1,113 complaints and 7 recalls with 229 complaints[2]. These counts are not adjusted for sales, so they show how much is on file, not how likely a van is to fail.
Should you buy a used 2019 Pacifica?
The 361 complaints for 2019 rank in the middle of the 16 model years on file[2], but it holds stalling and shutdown reports in the engine and power train groups, and brake complaints with the most crashes[4][5][9]. The recalls cover fire risk, stalling and camera faults[15][16][18][20][21]. Before you buy, run the VIN on NHTSA.gov and confirm each recall repair was done, and ask a dealer about any that show as open. For a plug-in hybrid, ask especially about the battery and 12 volt post recalls[15][18]. EPA rates the gas van at 22 MPG combined and NHTSA gives it 5 stars overall[6][7].
