2010 Chrysler Sebring: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA lists 104 owner complaints for the 2010 Sebring, and air bags are the biggest group[1][2]. The car also has a recall for a module that may keep air bags from deploying, which owners say waited on parts[3][2].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 104 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Of those, 8 mention a crash, 5 a fire and 3 an injury, and none report a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports. One complaint can name more than one part, so the groups below add up to more than the total.
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Air bags[2] | 34 |
| Engine[6] | 21 |
| Seat belts[7] | 21 |
| Electrical system[8] | 17 |
| Power train[9] | 13 |
| Brakes[10] | 11 |
| Steering[11] | 8 |
| Electronic stability control[12] | 7 |
Air bags. There are 34 complaints, with 4 crashes and 2 injuries. The median mileage at failure was 77,000[2]. In a sample of complaints we read for this group, 5 of 12 describe owners waiting on a recall repair because parts were not available[2]. Another 3 of 12 describe air bags that did not deploy, or only partly deployed, in a crash[2].
Seat belts. There are 21 complaints[7]. In the sample we read, 9 of 12 are owners waiting on the recall that covers seat belts and air bags, again citing missing parts[7].
Engine. There are 21 complaints, with 4 fires[6]. In the sample we read, 4 of 12 describe air conditioning parts failing and costing the owner money[6]. Another 3 of 12 describe a fire, and 3 of 12 describe losing power or stalling on the road[6].
Electrical system. There are 17 complaints[8]. In the sample we read, 4 of 12 describe the electronic throttle control light coming on, followed by lost power or stalling, sometimes at highway speed[8]. Two more describe stalling with other warning lights.
Other groups. Power train has 13 complaints, brakes 11, steering 8 and stability control 7[9][10][11][12]. Brakes and steering each include crash reports, 4 for brakes and 2 for steering[10][11]. We did not read complaint texts for these groups, so we do not describe what owners say about them.
Recalls
NHTSA lists three recalls for this model year, newest first.
- Occupant restraint module (16V668), September 2016. The module that controls the air bags may short circuit[3]. If it does, the front air bags, seat belt pretensioners and side air bags may not deploy in a crash, which raises the risk of injury[3]. The fix is a free module replacement by a dealer[3]. Chrysler mailed letters on October 26, 2016 saying parts were not available yet, and the recall began on August 15, 2017[3]. This recall covers several other models too, 1,435,625 vehicles in all[3]. Owner complaints say repair parts were not available when they asked, and our facts do not show whether that has changed[2][7].
- Power steering hose (10V475), October 2010. The power steering pressure hose can separate at its crimped end[13]. Leaked fluid on hot engine parts could cause a fire[13]. Dealers inspect the hoses and replace them as needed, free of charge, and the recall began on December 20, 2010[13]. It covers 23,237 vehicles across several models[13].
- Brake booster clip (10V009), January 2010. A retaining clip on the brake booster input rod may be badly formed or missing[14]. That could cause brake failure without warning and lead to a crash[14]. Chrysler replaces the clip free of charge[14]. It covers 20,045 vehicles across several models[14].
Before you buy, ask a dealer to check the VIN against all three. Owners can reach Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403[3].
Fuel economy
EPA lists six versions of the Sebring. All are front-wheel drive with an automatic. The 2.7L engine is listed for gasoline or E85, and the others for regular[15][16][5][17][18][19].
| Body and engine | City / highway / combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| Sebring 2.4L 4-cyl, 4-speed (and likewise for the other rows)[5] | 21 / 30 / 24 | $2,800 |
| Sedan 2.7L 6-cyl, 4-speed[19] | 19 / 27 / 22 | $3,050 |
| Sedan 3.5L 6-cyl, 6-speed[17] | 16 / 27 / 20 | $3,350 |
| Convertible 2.4L 4-cyl, 4-speed[15] | 20 / 29 / 23 | $2,900 |
| Convertible 2.7L 6-cyl, 4-speed[18] | 18 / 26 / 21 | $3,200 |
| Convertible 3.5L 6-cyl, 6-speed[16] | 16 / 27 / 20 | $3,350 |
The EPA fuel cost uses current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA's 5-star ratings are listed as not rated for the 4-door and for the convertible[20][21]. That means there is no star rating to compare. It is not a bad score.
Engine and size
The EPA test car list shows a 2010 Sebring with an electric motor rated at 235 hp[22]. That entry says nothing more about the engine, so do not read it as the rating for every Sebring.
Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.
| Version | Length | Width | Height | Wheelbase | Curb weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Convertible Limited 2-door FWD[23] | 194 in | 72 in | 59 in | 109 in | 3,957 lb |
| Convertible LX/Touring 2-door FWD[24] | 194 in | 72 in | 59 in | 109 in | 3,845 lb |
| Sedan Limited 4-door AWD[25] | 191 in | 71 in | 59 in | 109 in | 3,697 lb |

NHTSA lists complaints and recalls for 16 Sebring model years, from 1995 to 2010[4]. The 2010 model has 104 complaints and 3 recalls[4].
Only two years have fewer complaints, 2003 with 74 and 2009 with 45[4]. For recalls, 2010 ties with 1995 and 2005 at 3 each[4]. Seven years have more recalls, and six have fewer[4]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so a low count can partly reflect fewer cars on the road.
Should you buy a used 2010 Sebring?
The complaint count is low for this model line, but the recalls matter more than the count[4]. Check that the air bag module recall 16V668 has been done, because owners reported long waits for parts and our facts do not show the current status[3][2]. Also confirm the power steering hose and brake clip recalls were handled[13][14]. The 3.5L versions have the highest estimated fuel cost at $3,350 a year[16][17]. have the highest estimated fuel cost at $3,350 a year[16][17]. Because NHTSA has no star rating for this car, a pre-purchase inspection and a VIN recall check are the best way to judge a specific one[20][21].
