2016 Chrysler Town and Country: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 527 owner complaints on file for the 2016 Town and Country, and power train is the biggest group[1][2]. Five recalls are on file, including one for a transmission pump that can lose pressure[3][4].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 527 complaints with NHTSA[1]. Twelve mention a crash, 1 a fire and 9 injuries[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several parts. The counts are not adjusted for how many vans were sold.
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Power train[2] | 187 |
| Unknown or other[7] | 110 |
| Electrical system[8] | 107 |
| Structure[9] | 75 |
| Engine[10] | 71 |
| Seats[11] | 23 |
| Latches/locks/linkages[12] | 16 |
| Air bags[13] | 16 |
Power train. The median mileage at failure is 83,500, with 4 crashes and 1 injury named[2]. In a sample of 12 power train complaints we read, 6 describe trouble getting the transmission pump recall repair scheduled, or learning about it after buying the van[2]. Another 6 describe loss of power, slipping or odd shifting, or a failed transmission[2].
Engine. In a sample of 12 engine complaints we read, 9 describe the engine stalling or shutting off, or losing power[10].
Electrical system. In a sample of 12 we read, 5 describe a power sliding door lock that stopped working[8].
Structure. In a sample of 12 we read, 10 describe a sliding door that will not open[9]. Owners in these texts say this is a worry for getting out in an emergency[9].
Recalls
Five recalls are on file, newest first.
- Fire extinguisher (17V824). About 61,791 vehicles across several brands[14] had Kidde extinguishers that can clog or be hard to use, and in some the nozzle can come off. If it fails, the risk of injury in a fire goes up. Chrysler tells owners to contact Kidde for a free replacement[14].
- Transmission pump (16V461). The pump may seize and cause a loss of hydraulic pressure. The van may lose power, which raises the risk of a crash. Dealers replace the pump free of charge[4].
- Third row seatback (16V300). Nuts on the third row seatbacks were tightened wrongly and may loosen. A seatback could separate from the seat frame and cause injury. Only 99 vehicles were affected[15]. Dealers re-tighten the nuts free of charge[15].
- Windshield (16V044). The windshield may have been installed with expired primer and could come loose in a crash, which raises the risk of injury. Dealers replace the windshield free of charge[16].
- Hood latch (15V595). Bolts holding the hood striker may loosen, so the hood could open while driving and block the driver's view. Dealers fit new bolts at the proper torque free of charge[17].
These recalls cover only certain vehicles, so check your own VIN with NHTSA.
Fuel economy
EPA rates the 3.6L 6-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic and front-wheel drive at 17 city, 25 highway and 20 combined MPG[5]. The estimated annual fuel cost is $3,350[5]. The rating is the same for the Gasoline or E85 version and the Regular version[5][18]. The cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices when the van was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA rates the front-wheel-drive van at 4 stars overall[6]. Frontal is 4 stars, side is 5 stars and rollover is 4 stars[6]. The rollover risk is 16.4%[6].

Should you buy a used 2016 Town and Country?
The complaint count is lower than each of 2009 to 2014, but power train is still the largest group[3][2]. Check the VIN for open recalls, especially the transmission pump one, which can cause loss of power[4]. Ask whether the sliding doors open and lock reliably, since owners in our sample describe door problems[9]. The van has a 4-star overall rating and 20 combined MPG[6][5]. Our data does not cover repair costs, so get an inspection.
