2015 Dodge Charger: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2015 Charger has 136 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, fewer than any earlier model year[1][2]. It also has 7 recalls, so check any car's VIN before you buy[2].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 136 complaints with NHTSA about the 2015 Charger[1]. Ten mention a crash, one a fire and three an injury. None report a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component.
The groups named most often:
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Power train[4] | 32 |
| Engine[5] | 25 |
| Electrical system[6] | 22 |
| Unknown or other[7] | 21 |
| Brakes[8] | 15 |
| Steering[9] | 13 |
| Speed control[10] | 12 |
| Air bags[11] | 12 |
What owners describe, from a small sample of complaint texts we read:
- Power train. In several of 12 texts, owners describe gear changes that are rough, slip or leave the car stuck in a low gear[4]. One text says the transmission seized after a recall repair[4]. Median mileage at failure was 56,070[4].
- Brakes. In 6 of 12 texts, owners describe ABS, traction or stability warning lights, in two of them tied to a failed wheel speed sensor[8]. Two texts describe a leaking rear brake line or a pedal that went to the floor[8]. Median mileage at failure was 53,500[8].
- Electrical system. In 5 of 12 texts, owners describe sudden power loss, a car that would not start or a computer fault[6]. One text describes a wire that caught fire[6]. Median mileage at failure was 53,000[6].
- Engine. In 2 of 12 texts, owners describe a ticking noise linked to camshaft or rocker arm work[5]. Median mileage at failure was 57,000[5].
The air bag and speed control groups are small, but they show more serious outcomes. Air bag complaints include 4 crashes and 1 injury[11]. Speed control complaints include 2 crashes and 2 injuries[10].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 7 recalls for this model year[2], newest first. Several cover other models too[12][13][14]. Each notice lists the remedy as free of charge[12][13][15][16][17][14][18]. Check your own VIN on NHTSA's recall site to see if a recall applies to your car.
- Passenger air bag inflator (19V018). The inflator could explode in a crash and send metal fragments at people in the car, with a risk of serious injury or death. The notice advises owners not to drive the car until the repair is done. Dealers replace the passenger air bag inflator. The notice names other Dodge and Chrysler models, and NHTSA lists it under this model year[12].
- Cruise control software (18V332). A short circuit in the wiring could stop cruise control from turning off, so the car could hold its speed or speed up. Dealers inspect the software and update the engine or powertrain control module. The notice tells owners to avoid cruise control until the update is installed[13].
- Front driveshaft joint (18V281). On pursuit police cars with all-wheel drive and V8 engines, the front driveshaft joint may seize or break, and the shaft could fall off the car[15]. This raises the risk of a crash. Dealers replace the front driveshaft. It covers 13,928 vehicles[15].
- Front driveshaft bolts (17V097). On all-wheel-drive cars, the front driveshaft bolts may loosen and let the shaft disconnect. This could cause a loss of power and raises the risk of a crash. Dealers replace all eight front driveshaft bolts[16].
- Jack and body sill (16V043). When the car is lifted with the supplied jack and the wheels are not chocked, the body sill may give way and the car could fall. Dealers provide wheel chocks and instructions for using them. It covers 441,578 vehicles[17].
- Radio software (15V461). Radio software weaknesses could let someone outside the car reach certain vehicle control systems, which raises the risk of a crash. Owners are mailed a USB drive with a software update, or can download it or visit a dealer[14].
- Fuel rail hose (15V114). On 2015 supercharged SRT cars with the 6.2L engine built in a set window, a damaged seal or hose could leak fuel[18]. Near a hot engine or exhaust, that raises the risk of a fire. Dealers replace the fuel rail injector crossover hose. It covers 1,875 vehicles[18].
Fuel economy
EPA ratings depend on the engine and drive type. Annual fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
| Version | City / highway / combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| Charger 3.6L, rear-wheel drive[3] | 19 / 30 / 23 | $2,900 |
| Charger AWD 3.6L, all-wheel drive[19] | 18 / 27 / 21 | $3,200 |
| Charger 5.7L, midgrade fuel[20] | 16 / 25 / 19 | $4,000 |
| Charger SRT8 6.4L, premium fuel[21] | 15 / 25 / 18 | $4,550 |
| Charger SRT8 6.2L, premium fuel[22] | 13 / 22 / 16 | $5,150 |
The 3.6L is also rated with a gasoline or E85 option, with the same MPG and cost as shown for the gasoline-only versions[23][24]. All listed versions use an 8-speed automatic[3][20][21][22][19].
Safety ratings
The only NHTSA 5-Star ratings in our data are for rollover[25][26]. The 4-door all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive versions each get 5 stars, with a rollover risk of 10.1%[25][26].
Engine and size
EPA lists a 3.6L 6-cylinder rated at 292 hp[27] and a 5.7L 8-cylinder rated at 359 hp[28]. Fuel economy listings also show 6.2L and 6.4L 8-cylinder engines[21][22].
Dimensions are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models. Every variant listed is 198 in long, 75 in wide and 58 in high, with a 120 in wheelbase[29][30][31][32][33]. Curb weight changes with the version:

Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so read them as a rough guide. The 2015 model year has 136 complaints[2]. That is fewer than 2016 (182) and fewer than every year from 2006 to 2014, where the lowest is 175 in 2009[2]. It is more than 2017 (128) and every later year[2].
Its 7 recalls are fewer than 2011 (12), 2012 (15), 2013 (9) and 2014 (10)[2]. All the remaining listed years from 2006 to 2027 has 6 recalls or fewer[2].
Should you buy a used 2015 Charger?
The complaint count is lower than any earlier model year, and no deaths are reported in the 136 complaints[1][2]. The recall list is the bigger item. Before buying, run the VIN on NHTSA's recall site, especially for the air bag inflator, cruise control and driveshaft recalls[12][13][16]. Pay attention to the engine, because fuel cost runs from $2,900 to $5,150 a year depending on the version[3][22]. In the complaint texts we read, owners describe rough shifting and ABS or stability warnings, so test drive for both[4][8].
