2022 Ford Bronco Sport: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 369 owner complaints on file for the 2022 Bronco Sport[1], and the model year carries 15 recalls[2]. Several recalls involve fuel injectors and the 12-volt battery, so check recall status on any car you consider[3][4].
Reported problems
NHTSA lists 369 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Of those, 13 mention a crash, 13 mention a fire and 17 mention an injury, and no deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component.
Three component groups lead the list.
| Component group | Complaints | Median mileage at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Engine[7] | 89 | 46,290 |
| Electrical system[8] | 77 | 37,000 |
| Power train[9] | 70 | 38,000 |
The engine group also has the highest number of fire mentions, 7[7]. Next in line are "unknown or other" with 56 complaints[10], fuel system (gasoline) with 51[11], brakes with 50[12] and fuel/propulsion system with 42[13]. Forward collision avoidance has 15[14].
In the samples of complaints we read, owners describe a few repeating stories.
- Engine. Owners describe hesitation, sputtering or a sudden loss of power while driving. A few describe overheating with coolant loss, and some describe a fire[7]. Others describe waiting for a recall repair[7].
- Power train. Owners describe reduced-power warnings, hard or stuck shifting, fluid leaks and grinding noises[9].
- Electrical system. Owners describe a dead or failing battery, the car shutting off, and dashboard or screen displays going dark while driving[8].
- Fuel system. The fuel system samples we read are about owners waiting for parts for the fuel injector recall 22V859, often before any failure had happened[11][15].
These samples are small. They show what owners report, not how often a problem happens.
Recalls
NHTSA shows 15 recalls on file for the 2022 model year[2]. They are listed here newest first. Ford's customer service line in the notices is 1-866-436-7332[16].
- Front control arm ball joints (26V340, May 2026). The front lower ball joints may have been installed or repaired incorrectly at the plant, so a control arm could come loose from the wheel. That can cause a loss of control and a crash. Owners are told not to drive the vehicle until the remedy is done. Dealers will inspect and repair the ball joints as needed[16].
- Engine block heater (25V685, October 2025). The block heater can crack and leak coolant, then short circuit when plugged in. That raises the risk of fire. Owners are told not to plug it in until the vehicle is remedied. The final remedy was anticipated for September 2026, and the notice does not say whether it has arrived. Dealers will replace the heater, and owners can instead have the heater element swapped for a blanking plug and the cord removed[17].
- Remedy pending
Fuel injector, final remedy pending (25V467, July 2025). A fuel injector on 1.5L engines may crack and leak fuel in the engine compartment[3]. That raises the risk of fire. Dealers update the engine software as an interim repair. The final remedy, a new fuel rail and injectors, was anticipated for July 2026. This recall expands and replaces 22V859, 24V187 and 25V165, and cars already repaired under those need the new final remedy once it is available[3]. - Rearview camera software (25V442, June 2025). A software error can leave the camera image blank or keep it on screen after reversing. That can reduce rear visibility or distract the driver. Dealers update the software[18].
- Battery state of charge modules (25V158, March 2025). Cars that were repaired incorrectly under 24V267[19] may still fail to detect a low 12-volt battery. That can cost the driver accessories such as hazard lights, or drive power. Dealers recalibrate the control modules[19].
- Fuel injector software (25V165, March 2025). Cars repaired incorrectly under 22V859 or 24V187 could still have a cracking injector and a fuel leak. Dealers update the powertrain control module software[20].
- 12-volt battery (25V019, January 2025). The battery may degrade and fail suddenly[4]. That can cost the driver accessories such as hazard lights, or drive power. Dealers inspect the battery and replace it if needed. Cars repaired under 24V267 need this new remedy too[4].
- Body control module (24V267, April 2024). The control modules may not detect a change in battery charge. The risk and the recalibration fix match 25V158[21].
- Fuel injector leak detection (24V187, March 2024). An expansion of 22V859 for 1.5L engines[22]. Dealers add leak detection to the engine software and install a drain tube[22].
- Fuel injector (22V859, November 2022). A fuel injector on 1.5L engines may crack and leak fuel[15]. That raises the risk of fire. Dealers add leak detection to the engine software and install a drain tube. The notice said remedy parts were expected in the first quarter of 2023[15].
- Fuel pump module bracket (22V787, October 2022). The bracket may not be secured to the fuel tank, which can cause the module to fail and the engine to stall. Dealers replace the fuel tank[23].
- Parking lights (22V686, September 2022). The parking lights may flicker when the headlights are on. That can reduce visibility. The recall notes the vehicles fail a federal lighting standard. Dealers replace the LED driver module[24].
- Oil separator (22V191, March 2022). On 1.5L engines the oil separator housing may crack and leak oil[25]. That raises the risk of fire. Dealers inspect the part and replace it and the seals if needed[25].
- Rear brake linings (21V922, November 2021). The rear brake linings may have been made incorrectly. The driver may need more pedal force and a longer stopping distance. The recall notes the vehicles fail a federal brake standard. The remedy listed is new front brake pads[26].
- Fuel delivery module (21V625, August 2021). The module may leak inside the tank, which lowers fuel pressure and can stall the engine. Dealers replace the module[27].
Each notice says the dealer repair is free of charge[16][17][3][18][19][20][4][21][22][15][23][24][25][26][27].
Fuel economy
EPA rates the Bronco Sport 4WD two ways in our data[5][28].
| Engine | City / highway / combined MPG | EPA annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L 3-cylinder turbo, Automatic 8-spd[5] | 25 / 28 / 26 | $2,600 |
| 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo, Automatic (S8)[28] | 21 / 26 / 23 | $2,900 |
Both use regular fuel. The 1.5L is listed as all-wheel drive and the 2.0L as part-time 4-wheel drive[5][28]. EPA's annual cost uses its current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA's 5-Star ratings for the SUV 4WD are 5 stars overall, 5 stars for frontal crashes, 5 stars for side crashes and 4 stars for rollover[6]. NHTSA puts the rollover risk at 17.4%[6].
Engine and size
The EPA test car list rates the 1.5L 3-cylinder at 175 hp[29] and the 2.0L 4-cylinder at 235 hp[30].
The size figures below are Canadian-market specifications, converted to inches and pounds. They can differ slightly from US models.

| 2026[2] | 8 | 6 |
The 2022 year has the second highest number of complaints and the second highest number of recalls of the six years listed[2]. Counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so treat them as a rough guide.
Should you buy a used 2022 Bronco Sport?
The 2022 Bronco Sport has a long recall history and a complaint count that puts it second highest among its model years[2]. Several recalls cover fuel injectors and the 12-volt battery, and the notices say some earlier repairs needed to be redone[3][19][4]. Two recalls had final remedies that were still anticipated in 2026[17][3], and the newest recall tells owners not to drive until the ball joint remedy is done[16]. Safety ratings are good, with 5 stars overall[6]. If you are buying one, ask for proof that every recall has been completed and check the VIN with NHTSA.
