2023 Ford Bronco: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 230 owner complaints for the 2023 Bronco, and the biggest group is about wipers[1][2]. The model year also has 18 recalls on file, so check your VIN before you buy[3].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 230 owner complaints for the 2023 Bronco[1]. Six mention a crash, three a fire and three an injury. None report a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component. The counts are not adjusted for sales.
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Visibility/wiper[2] | 90 |
| Electrical system[5] | 23 |
| Power train[6] | 22 |
| Engine[7] | 21 |
| Unknown or other[8] | 20 |
| Brakes[9] | 17 |
| Structure[10] | 16 |
| Suspension[11] | 13 |
We also read a small sample of complaint texts in the four largest named groups. It is a sample, so it shows what owners describe and not how common a problem is.
- Wipers[2]. Owners describe wipers that slow down to a slow intermittent pattern on their own in rain or snow. They say they have to change the switch setting to get steady wiping back. Some owners call it a visibility risk in heavy rain. The 90 wiper complaints include no crash, fire or injury[2].
- Electrical[5]. In the sample, owners describe a rearview camera or touchscreen that freezes or does not show an image. A couple describe trouble with the connected-services app.
- Power train[6]. In the sample, some owners with a manual transmission describe a scraping or grinding noise in low gears, mostly when the car is cold.
- Engine[7]. In the sample, owners describe stalling, loss of power or engine failure while driving. Some say the repair waited on parts.
Recalls
Our data lists 18 recalls for the 2023 Bronco[3]. Newest first:
- Engine wiring harness (26V468). The wiring in the engine compartment can get damaged and short circuit. That can create heat or sparks and raise the risk of a fire. The fix is protective sheathing over the wiring. Ford is running the campaign in phases by model, and owner letters went out August 5, 2026[12]. Treat the remedy as phased and not yet confirmed for every owner[12].
- Fender flares (26V403). The fender flares may not be secured well and can come off. A flare on the road is a hazard and raises the crash risk. Dealers inspect and repair or replace the flares[13].
- Transmission to transfer case joint (26V236). The joint may be misaligned after an earlier repair done incorrectly. Wear on the splines can lead to loss of drive power or the vehicle rolling away. Dealers inspect the joint and replace the transmission and transfer case if needed[14].
- Rearview camera software (26V124). A control module can overheat and shut down, so the rearview image may not show. That cuts the driver's view behind the car. A dealer or an over-the-air update fixes the software[15].
- Front seat bolt (25V721). A pivot bolt in the front seat height adjuster can come loose. The seat may then not hold a person well in a crash. Dealers check the seat and swap the pivot links and bolts where needed[16].
- Block heater (25V685). The engine block heater can crack and leak coolant, which can cause a short circuit and raise the fire risk. Owners are told not to plug in the block heater until the car is fixed. The final remedy was anticipated for September 2026, so do not count on it being available yet. Ford says owners will also be able to choose a plug in place of the heater element once the remedy is available[17].
- Fuel pump (25V455). The low-pressure fuel pump may fail and the engine can stall while driving, which raises the crash risk. On Bronco, the fix is a software update to the engine computer[18].
- All-around view camera (25V273). The all-around view camera may show no rearview image in reverse. Dealers replace the camera. This recall expands an earlier one[19].
- Rearview camera software, earlier recall (25V315). A software problem can leave the rearview image frozen or missing. The fix is a software update by a dealer or over the air. It is phased by model and year, so the remedy comes at different times[20].
- Rear shock absorbers (25V025). The rear shocks can corrode and fail, and the outer reservoir can detach and become a road hazard. Dealers replace the rear shocks as necessary[21].
- Child safety lock (24V189). On certain 4-door Broncos, the left rear door can be opened from inside even when the child lock is on[22]. Dealers inspect the locks and replace the rear door latch if needed[22].
- Rear quarter glass (24V142). The rear side glass panels may be installed wrong on the hard top and could detach. Dealers inspect and reinstall the panels, and replace one on Bronco Heritage vehicles[23].
- Park pawl (23V546). Damage during assembly can keep the parking pawl from fully engaging, and the vehicle can roll away. Dealers replace the transmission[24].
- Tire and loading label (23V379). The label shows the wrong load capacity, which can lead to overloading. Owners get a corrected label to put over the old one[25].
- Seat belt latch plates (23V358). On 5-door Broncos, the front seat belt latches can be hard to reach from where they rest[26]. People may then not buckle up. Dealers fit a small sliding clip on the driver and front passenger belts so the latch stays easy to reach[26].
- Lug nuts (23V283). Lug nuts on the driver's side wheels may not be tight enough, so a wheel could come off while driving. Owners are told not to drive until the check is done. Dealers inspect and retighten if needed[27].
- Steering gear (23V155). Damage inside the steering gear can make steering heavy or lock the wheel. That could mean a complete loss of steering control. Owners are told not to drive until it is fixed. Dealers replace the steering gear[28].
- Transmission loose bolt (23V070). A loose bolt in the transmission may stop it from engaging park, which can cause rollaway. Dealers inspect and replace the transmission if necessary[29].
The recall notices in our data describe the repairs as free of charge[13][14][16]. Enter your VIN on NHTSA.gov to see which ones apply to your car.
Fuel economy
EPA ratings change with the version of the Bronco. The Bronco 4WD with the 2.3L four-cylinder turbo is rated 20 city, 21 highway and 20 combined MPG, with an estimated annual fuel cost of $3,350[4]. The 2.7L six-cylinder turbo in the same version has the same 20 combined rating[30].
The Badlands is rated 17 combined with an estimated $3,950 a year[31]. The Black Diamond gets 18 combined with the automatic and 17 with the manual 2.3L[32][33]. The Raptor with the 3.0L six-cylinder turbo is rated 15 city, 16 highway and 15 combined, at an estimated $4,450 a year[34].
EPA fuel costs use EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA's 5-Star ratings for the 4WD SUV show 4 stars for frontal crash and 3 stars for rollover, with a rollover risk of 25.6%[35]. The 2-door 4WD rating also shows 3 stars for rollover[36]. We do not have an overall rating for this model year.
Engine and size
EPA lists three engines for the 2023 Bronco. The 2.3L four-cylinder is rated 270 hp[37]. The 2.7L six-cylinder is rated 315 hp[38]. The 3.0L six-cylinder is rated 400 hp[39].
Sizes below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.

| 2026 | 11 | 9 |
NHTSA's counts by Bronco model year show 2022 with the most complaints at 383 and the most recalls at 23[3]. The 2023 model year has 230 complaints, the same as 2021, and 18 recalls[3]. For recalls, 2023 sits fourth among the listed years, behind 2022 with 23, 2021 with 20 and 2025 with 19[3]. The 2024 model year has 82 complaints and 16 recalls[3]. Some recalls cover several model years and counts are not adjusted for sales, so read these as rough context.
Should you buy a used 2023 Bronco?
The 2023 Bronco has a long recall list, so run the VIN on NHTSA.gov and ask for proof that each recall was done[3]. Two recalls, the engine wiring harness and the block heater, have remedies that are phased or still pending, so ask the seller what has and has not been completed[12][17]. The largest complaint group is wipers that slow down on their own, so test them in rain or with a wet windshield[2]. Complaints are unverified and we cannot say how common any one problem is[1]. A car with every recall completed is a fairer bet than one with open recalls.
