2024 Ford Bronco: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 82 owner complaints on file for the 2024 Ford Bronco, which is fewer than the 2021 to 2023 model years[1][2]. It also has 16 recalls, so checking the recall status of any specific vehicle matters[2].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 82 owner complaints for the 2024 Bronco[1]. Of those, 4 mention a crash, 4 mention a fire, 1 mentions injuries and none report deaths[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component group.
| Component group | Complaints | Fires mentioned |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown or other[4] | 23 | 0 |
| Electrical system[5] | 19 | 2 |
| Structure[6] | 15 | 1 |
| Brakes[7] | 9 | 0 |
| Power train[8] | 8 | 0 |
| Engine[9] | 7 | 3 |
| Suspension[10] | 7 | 0 |
| Lane departure[11] | 6 | 0 |
We also read a small sample of the complaint texts. These themes come from that sample only, so they do not tell you how common a problem is.
- Structure. Owners describe removable roof panels that crack or let water in[6].
- Power train. Owners describe a sudden loss of power with warning messages, and in some cases unexpected movement[8].
- Brakes. Owners describe a pedal that did not respond as expected, and a separate issue with brakes locking up when the Bronco is towed in neutral[7].
- Electrical. Owners describe infotainment, driver-assist and warning-message glitches[5].
The engine group is small at 7 complaints, but 3 of them mention a fire[9]. Treat that as a reason to ask about open recalls, not as proof of a pattern[9].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 16 recalls for the 2024 model year[2]. Newest first:
- Engine wiring harness (26V468). The wiring in the engine compartment may become damaged and short circuit, which raises the risk of a fire. Dealers will install sheathing over the wiring at no charge. Ford is rolling the fix out in phases, with owners of 2021 to 2026 Bronco models notified on or about 9/1/2026[12].
- Fender flares (26V403). The flares may come loose and fall off, creating a road hazard. Dealers will inspect and repair or replace them[13].
- Seat frame bolt (26V268). A front seat height-adjust pivot bolt may loosen, so the seat may not hold an occupant properly in a crash. Dealers will inspect and replace parts as needed[14].
- Transmission to transfer case joint (26V236). A misaligned joint can wear the splines, which may cause a loss of drive power or rollaway. Dealers will check the joint and swap out the transmission and transfer case where needed[15].
- Rearview camera software (26V124). The APIM, a control module, may overheat and shut down, which can stop the camera image from showing. The fix is a software update from a dealer or over the air[16].
- Remedy pending
Engine block heater (25V685). The heater may crack and leak coolant, then short circuit when plugged in, which raises the risk of a fire. Owners are told not to plug it in until the vehicle is fixed. The remedy is not yet available, and Ford anticipated the final remedy in September 2026[17]. - High pressure fuel pump bolts (25V597). Bolts may not be tightened properly, which can cause a fuel leak and raise the fire risk. Dealers will replace the bolts[18].
- Remedy pending
Rearview camera software (25V315). A software error may delay or freeze the camera image. The remedy is a software update, and it is phased by model and model year, so it may not be available for every vehicle yet[19]. - Rear door child lock (25V303). The left rear door may open from inside with the child lock on. This expands recall 24V189. Dealers will inspect and replace the latch as needed[20].
- Front lower control arm (25V308). Loose fasteners could let the arm detach, risking loss of steering and control. Owners are advised not to drive until it is repaired[21].
- Front upper control arm ball joint (25V310). A missing or loose fastener could let the arm detach, risking loss of steering and control. Dealers will inspect and tighten or replace it[22].
- Transmission valve body (25V164). A valve body machined incorrectly can cause reverse gear failure or unexpected movement in reverse or neutral. Dealers will replace it[23].
- Rear shock absorbers (25V025). The shocks may corrode, and the external reservoir can detach and become a road hazard. Dealers will replace the shocks as necessary[24].
- Front upper control arm ball joint (24V770). A nut that was not installed or tightened properly could let the arm detach, risking loss of steering and control. Dealers will inspect and replace parts as needed[25].
- Rear door child lock (24V189). The same left rear door issue that 25V303 later expanded. Dealers will inspect and replace the latch as needed[26].
- Rear quarter glass (24V142). The glass panels may detach from the hard top and become a road hazard. Dealers will inspect and reinstall them[27].
Several of these recalls name other Ford models too, but each one lists the Bronco. Before you buy, ask for the VIN and check it on NHTSA.gov to see which recalls are open[12].
Fuel economy
The EPA lists ratings by engine and trim. The 2.3L turbo four-cylinder in the Bronco 4WD is rated 20 city, 21 highway and 20 combined MPG with either the manual or the automatic, and its estimated annual fuel cost is $3,350[3][28]. The base 2.7L six-cylinder is also rated 20 combined[29].
Badlands, Black Diamond and Sasquatch trims with the 2.3L manual come in at 17 combined, or 18 combined for the Black Diamond and Sasquatch automatics[30][31][32][33][34]. With the 2.7L, those trims are rated 17 or 18 combined[35][36][37]. The 3.0L Raptor is rated 15 city, 16 highway and 15 combined MPG, with an estimated annual fuel cost of $4,450[38].
EPA's annual fuel cost uses its current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 2024 Bronco 4 stars for frontal crash protection and 3 stars for rollover, with a rollover risk of 25.6%[39][40]. The two-door SUV 4WD and SUV 4WD listings show the same results[39][40].
Engine and size
Horsepower is the rating EPA lists for its test vehicles.
| Engine | Rated horsepower |
|---|---|
| 2.3L 4-cylinder[41] | 270 hp |
| 2.7L 6-cylinder[42] | 315 hp |
| 3.0L 6-cylinder[43] | 400 hp |
Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.
| Variant | Length | Width | Height | Wheelbase | Curb weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2-door 2.3L[44] | 165 in | 80 in | 72 in | 100 in | 4,288 lb |
| 2-door 2.7L[45] | 165 in | 80 in | 72 in | 100 in | 4,458 lb |
| 4-door 2.3L[46] | 181 in | 80 in | 73 in | 116 in | 4,467 lb |
| 4-door 2.7L[47] | 181 in | 80 in | 73 in | 116 in | 4,627 lb |
| Raptor 4-door[48] | 181 in | 86 in | 78 in | 116 in | 5,732 lb |
How 2024 compares with other years
Show the numbers
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 1995 | 94 | 1 |
| 1996 | 82 | 1 |
| 2021 | 230 | 20 |
| 2022 | 383 | 23 |
| 2023 | 230 | 18 |
| 2024 | 82 | 16 |
| 2025 | 55 | 19 |
| 2026 | 11 | 9 |
NHTSA counts complaints and recalls by model year. These counts are not adjusted for sales, so they work best for comparing years of the same model[2].
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 230 | 20 |
| 2022 | 383 | 23 |
| 2023 | 230 | 18 |
| 2024 | 82 | 16 |
| 2025 | 55 | 19 |
| 2026 | 11 | 9 |
All figures are from[2]. The 2024 model has fewer complaints than 2021, 2022 and 2023, and more than 2025 and 2026. On recalls, 2024 sits below 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025, and above 2026. The same fact also lists the 1995 and 1996 model years, with 94 and 82 complaints and 1 recall each, so 2024 matches 1996 on complaints[2].
Should you buy a used 2024 Bronco?
The 2024 Bronco has a lighter complaint record than the 2021 to 2023 model years, but its recall list is long[2]. Several recalls involve fire risk, control arm fasteners or transmission wear, so it helps to confirm which repairs were done[12][15][21]. Some remedies are still phased or not yet available, so confirm each recall status by VIN before buying[17][19]. The complaint themes we read are from a small sample, so they show what owners describe and not how common it is[6]. If a vehicle's VIN shows every recall completed, the recall list matters much less.
