2007 Ford Crown Victoria: problems, recalls and fuel economy
Owners filed 50 complaints with NHTSA for the 2007 Crown Victoria, and half of them name steering[1][2]. EPA rates the car at 18 MPG combined[3].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 50 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Six mention a crash, one a fire, five injuries and one a death[1]. These are unverified reports from owners, and one complaint can name more than one part. The counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold.
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Steering[2] | 25 |
| Speed control[5] | 8 |
| Engine[6] | 8 |
| Air bags[7] | 6 |
| Electrical system[8] | 5 |
| Suspension[9] | 5 |
| Power train[10] | 3 |
| Brakes[11] | 3 |
Steering. This is the biggest group, with 25 complaints, 2 crashes and 3 injuries. The median mileage at failure is 111,802[2]. In the sample of steering complaints we read, owners describe hard or stiff steering, clicking or clunking from the steering column, and shaft parts slipping or nearly coming apart. A few say the trouble came back after a recall repair or was not found during an inspection[2].
Speed control. There are 8 complaints, with 2 crashes[5]. In the sample we read, owners describe the engine revving or the car surging forward, often when the brake pedal is pressed[5].
Engine. There are 8 complaints and 1 crash[6]. The median mileage at failure is 81,243[6]. In the sample we read, some owners describe the same revving when braking. Two describe worries about a leaking plastic intake manifold and overheating[6].
Air bags. There are 6 complaints, with 3 crashes, 1 fire and 4 injuries[7]. In the sample we read, two owners describe an air bag going off after a crash that began with steering failure[7].
Electrical, suspension, power train and brakes each have 5 complaints or fewer[8][9][10][11]. That is too few to call any of them a pattern. The median mileage at failure for suspension is 124,171[9].
Recalls
NHTSA lists four recalls for this model, newest first. Remedies in all four are free at a dealer.
- Steering shaft repairs (14V704). Announced 2014-11-05, with 36,888 vehicles potentially affected[12]. It covers cars whose upper intermediate steering shaft was serviced during recall 13V385, because that repair may not have been done correctly. A badly repaired shaft could separate and cause loss of steering control. Dealers inspect the shaft and replace it if needed[12].
- Steering shaft corrosion (13V385). Announced 2013-08-29, with 355,000 vehicles potentially affected[13]. Severe corrosion can seize the lower intermediate shaft. That can lead to the upper shaft collapsing and the steering column bearing separating, which risks a loss of steering and a crash. Dealers replace the lower shaft, check the other parts for damage and fix what they find. The recall names vehicles registered or first sold in a list of states, including New York, Ohio and Illinois[13].
- ABS brake lines (07V183). Announced 2007-04-26, with 630 vehicles potentially affected[14]. The front and rear right brake lines may be reversed at the ABS control unit, so the brakes may not work as intended. Dealers inspect the connections and reposition them[14].
- Windshield mounting (06V440). Announced 2006-11-15, with 422 vehicles potentially affected[15]. The windshield may not be properly secured. Possible results are wind noise, rattles or leaks, and less protection in a crash. Dealers replace the windshield[15].
The 2013 and 2014 recalls matter most because steering is also the top complaint area[2][12][13]. Some recalls cover only certain vehicles, so ask a Ford dealer whether a specific car is included.
Fuel economy
EPA lists the 4.6L 8-cylinder with an Automatic 4-spd and rear-wheel drive at 15 MPG city, 23 highway and 18 combined[3]. That applies to the Regular version[3] and to the Gasoline or E85 version[16]. EPA estimates annual fuel cost at $3,700 for both[3][16]. That cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings list this car as not rated for the 4-DR RWD version[17] and for the 4-DR W/SAB RWD version[18]. We have no star scores to report.
Engine and size
The EPA entries list a 4.6L 8-cylinder engine with an Automatic 4-spd and rear-wheel drive[3]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US cars[19].

On recalls, 2007 has more than 2006 (2) and 2008 to 2011 (3, 2, 2, 2)[4]. The 2005 model has 5[4]. These counts are not adjusted for sales, so they show what was filed, not how likely a problem is.
Should you buy a used 2007 Crown Victoria?
Complaints for this year are lower than for any model year from 1995 to 2006[4]. Even so, steering draws half of them[1][2], and two recalls involve steering shafts[12][13]. If you look at one, ask the dealer whether the recall work was done and by whom. EPA rates fuel economy at 18 MPG combined, with an estimated $3,700 a year in fuel[3]., with an estimated $3,700 a year in fuel[3]. Our data does not cover horsepower, repair costs or crash-test stars, so check those separately.
