2019 Ford F-150: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 1,339 owner complaints on file for the 2019 Ford F-150, and the biggest group is the power train[1][2]. The truck also has 9 recalls on file, so check which ones apply to a specific truck before you buy or keep it[3].
Reported problems
Owners filed 1,339 complaints with NHTSA[1]. Of those, 17 mention a crash, 7 a fire and 25 injuries[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several components.
The power train group is the largest, with 737 complaints[2]. It includes 4 crashes and 5 injuries, and the median mileage at failure is 66,750[2]. In a sample of 12 power train complaints we read, 6 describe rough, jerky, skipping or clunking shifts, and 3 describe the truck suddenly not moving or slipping into neutral while driving[2].
The engine group has 374 complaints, with 2 fires and 1 injury and a median failure mileage of 69,500[5]. In a sample of 12 engine complaints, owners describe stalling or loss of power while driving in 5, and at least one mentions a message about auto start/stop[5]. Five describe knocking, rattling, ticking or popping noises, and 3 describe oil consumption[5].
The electrical system group has 100 complaints and 5 fires, with a median failure mileage of 44,500[6]. In a sample of 12 electrical complaints, 5 describe the engine shutting off[6]. Three describe driver-assist warnings that did not work or appeared at random[6].
Some smaller groups are worth a look because of what they report, not because they are common. Forward collision avoidance has 31 complaints with 5 crashes and 8 injuries[7]. Speed control has 44 complaints and 7 injuries[8]. Back over prevention, the rearview camera, has 56 complaints[9]. Structure has 32 complaints[10]. The group labeled unknown or other has 131[11].
In a sample of 12 back over prevention complaints, 10 describe a blank, distorted, blurry or hazy camera image[9]. Several say a dealer or Ford told them their truck was not included in the camera recall[9][12].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 9 recalls for this model year, newest first[3].
- Headlights (26V373). Ford is recalling certain trucks that were repaired incorrectly under the earlier headlight recall 20V097[13]. The daytime running lamps may stay fully bright after the switch is turned from Autolamps to Headlamps On. That can reduce other drivers' visibility and raise crash risk. Dealers will reprogram the body control module software. 91,198 units are potentially affected[13].
- Rearview camera software (25V442). A software error can make the camera show a blank image, or keep showing the image after the truck leaves reverse. The recall covers many Ford models, including the F-150[14]. Either problem can reduce the driver's view or distract the driver, which raises crash risk. Dealers will update the camera software. 200,237 units are potentially affected[14].
- Air bag warning label (24V852). The air bag warning label may be missing from the dashboard. Without it, occupants may not see the restraint guidelines, which raises injury risk in a crash. Ford will mail owners the labels. 27,678 units are potentially affected[15].
- Rearview camera (22V252). A poor electrical connection can make the camera show a blank or distorted image, which reduces the driver's view behind the truck. Dealers will replace the camera. The recall covers certain 2019 F-150 trucks and some Super Duty models[12]. 21,904 units are potentially affected[12].
- Headlights (20V097). On certain trucks with high series LED headlamps, the daytime running lamps may stay bright instead of dimming. That can reduce other drivers' visibility. Dealers will reprogram the body control module. 166,196 units are potentially affected[16].
- Battery cable (19V805). A fastener on the positive battery terminal may loosen. That can affect instrument displays and braking or steering assist, and the engine could stall. It could also cause a resistive short, which raises fire risk. Dealers will inspect the joint, remove extra adhesive, and retorque the fastener as needed. 135,725 units are potentially affected[17].
- Seat recliners (19V633). Manual front seat back recliners may be missing a part needed for seat back strength, leaving a loose seat back that may not hold an occupant in a crash. Dealers will inspect the seat structure and replace seats as necessary. 639,137 units are potentially affected[18].
- Engine block heater cable, second recall (19V278). The cable's splice connector may have been damaged during the earlier repair under 18V894. A damaged cable could overheat or melt wiring and raise fire risk. Dealers will disable the engine block heater. Replacement cables are to come when they become available, with a second notice to owners. Our data does not say whether they are available now. 131,068 units are potentially affected[19].
- Engine block heater cable (18V894). Water and contaminants may corrode the cable's splice connector. When the heater is plugged in, that can lead to overheated or melted wiring and a fire risk. Dealers will disable the block heater cable first. Once parts are available they will replace it. Our data does not say whether parts are available now. 410,289 units are potentially affected[20].
Fuel economy
EPA ratings for this model year run from 16 to 25 MPG combined, depending on engine and drive type[21][22][4]. Gasoline and gasoline or E85 versions run from 16 to 22 combined[23][24][21]. The diesel versions run from 22 to 25 combined[25][4].
Estimated annual fuel cost runs from $3,050 to $4,350[23][25]. EPA bases it on its current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the truck was new.
| Engine | 2WD combined MPG | 4WD combined MPG |
|---|---|---|
| 2.7L 6-cyl turbo[23][26] | 22 | 21 |
| 3.3L 6-cyl (gasoline or E85)[24][27] | 22 | 20 |
| 3.5L 6-cyl turbo[28][29] | 21 | 19 |
| 5.0L 8-cyl (gasoline or E85)[30][31] | 19 | 18 |
| 3.0L 6-cyl turbo diesel[4][25] | 25 | 22 |
The table shows the base pickup listing for each engine. Other listings can rate lower. For example, the 5.0L 4WD version with a GVWR over 7,599 lb is rated 16 combined with an estimated annual fuel cost of $4,200[21]. The Raptor 4WD is also rated 16 combined, at $4,200 a year[22].
Engine and size
Horsepower is the rating for EPA test vehicles. The 3.0L 6-cylinder is rated 250 hp[32]. The 3.3L 6-cylinder is rated 282 hp[33]. The 3.5L 6-cylinder is rated 375 to 450 hp depending on version[34].

NHTSA lists 1,339 complaints and 9 recalls for the 2019 F-150[3]. Among the 32 model years in the NHTSA table, 11 have more complaints[3]. The highest are 2013 with 2,990 and 1997 with 2,758[3]. 11 model years have more recalls than 2019, led by 2021 with 29[3].
The neighboring years differ. The 2018 model year has 2,322 complaints and 18 recalls, more of both than 2019[3]. The 2020 model year has 737 complaints and 11 recalls, fewer complaints but more recalls[3].
Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many trucks were sold, so treat the comparison as a rough guide[3].
Should you buy a used 2019 F-150?
The complaint file is large, and the largest groups are the power train and the engine[1][2][5]. Owners in the samples we read describe rough shifting and stalling, but we cannot say how common that is across all trucks. This model year has more complaints than 20 of the 32 listed F-150 years and more recalls than 20 of them[3].
Before you buy, look up which recalls apply to the specific truck, especially the two block heater recalls, where dealers first disable the heater and the cable replacement follows when parts are available[19][20]. Fuel economy varies a lot by engine, so check which engine the truck has[21][4].
