2016 Ford Fusion: problems, recalls and fuel economy
Owners filed 1,724 complaints with NHTSA about the 2016 Fusion, and the biggest group names the engine[1][2]. The car also has 13 recalls on file, so check every one by VIN before you buy or keep it[3].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 1,724 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Of these, 62 mention a crash, 6 a fire, 32 injuries and 1 a death[1]. These are unverified reports, and one complaint can name several parts.
The largest groups by component:
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Engine[2] | 553 |
| Power train[6] | 317 |
| Unknown or other[7] | 225 |
| Steering[8] | 184 |
| Electrical system[9] | 166 |
| Back over prevention[10] | 145 |
| Brakes[11] | 143 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[12] | 86 |
We read a small sample of 12 complaint texts in each of four groups. This is not a count of all owners, but it shows what owners describe.
- Engine. In 10 of the 12 texts, owners describe the car stalling or losing acceleration, with warning lights[2]. In 5, the owner or a dealer named the throttle body as the cause[2].
- Power train. 10 of the 12 texts describe a sudden loss of power, and some mention a wrench light on the dash[6]. One describes the shifter not holding Park so the car rolled[6].
- Electrical system. 7 of the 12 texts describe power loss or stalling[9]. 3 describe battery drain, starting trouble or glitchy electronics[9].
- Steering. 6 of the 12 texts describe a loose or off-center steering wheel[8]. 3 describe a power steering fault or lost assist[8].
In the engine and power train groups, the median mileage at failure is 85,000 and 81,000 miles[2][6]. Electrical complaints have a lower median of 57,500 miles[9].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 13 recalls for the 2016 Fusion[3], newest first. Many cover several models. Each applies to this car only if your VIN is included, so check it at NHTSA.gov.
- Manual transmission clutch (26V376). June 2026, 5,252 vehicles[13]. Certain 2013-2016 Fusions were repaired incorrectly under earlier recalls. The clutch may fracture and damage the transmission, and a fluid leak near hot parts can raise fire risk. Ford says dealers will update the software for free. Clutch replacement is described for Focus vehicles[13].
- Rearview camera (25V695). October 2025, 1,448,655 vehicles across many Ford and Lincoln models[14]. The camera image may be distorted, intermittent or blank in reverse, which raises crash risk. Dealers will inspect and replace the camera as needed. The remedy is released in phases by model and year, so ask a dealer whether yours is ready[14].
- Door latches (23V775). November 2023, 45,173 vehicles in a list of states and territories[15]. A latch part may break, making doors hard to latch or letting them open while driving. Dealers inspect and replace all four side latches if needed[15].
- Front brake hoses (23V162). March 2023, 1,280,726 vehicles[16]. The hoses may rupture and leak brake fluid, which lengthens stopping distance. Dealers replace the front hoses[16].
- Shift cable bushing (22V413). June 2022, 2,925,968 vehicles[17]. The bushing may wear or detach, so the car may not shift into the chosen gear or may roll after Park is selected. Dealers replace the bushing and add a protective cap[17].
- Door latches (20V177). March 2020, 288,110 vehicles in a similar list of states and territories[18]. A latch part may break, and a door may not be fully closed when it seems to be. Dealers replace the side latches[18].
- Steering gear motor bolts (19V632). August 2019, 116,160 vehicles originally sold or registered in a listed group of states and the District of Columbia[19]. Corroded bolts may let the steering motor detach, which means a loss of power steering assist and greater steering effort, especially at lower speeds. Dealers replace the bolts and apply wax sealer, or install a new steering gear if bolts are broken or missing[19].
- Shifter cable bushing (19V362). May 2019, 259,182 vehicles with 2.5 liter engines[20]. The bushing may detach so the shifter reads Park when the transmission is not in Park, and the car may move after you leave it. Dealers replace the bushing. Ford directs owners to use the parking brake until the repair is done[20].
- Shifter cable bushing (18V471). July 2018, 504,182 vehicles with six-speed automatic transmissions[21]. Same failure and risk as above. Dealers replace the bushing, and owners are told to use the parking brake until then[21].
- Steering wheel bolt (18V167). March 2018, 1,301,986 vehicles[22]. The retaining bolt may loosen and the steering wheel may detach while driving. Dealers install a longer bolt[22].
- Seat belt anchor cable (16V875). December 2016, 603,392 vehicles built from November 2, 2012 to July 31, 2014[23]. Heat from the belt pretensioner in a crash may make an anchor cable fail. Dealers apply a protective coating[23].
- Driver seat track (16V250). April 2016, 39 vehicles built in one week of March 2016[24]. A seat track part may have been poorly welded, which could fail to restrain the driver in a crash. Ford quarantined these cars at dealers before sale, and dealers replace the seat track rail[24].
- Fuel tank (15V618). October 2015, 658 vehicles built in a short September 2015 window[25]. The tank wall may be too thin and may crack in a crash, which risks fuel leaks and fire. Dealers replace the tank[25].
Fuel economy
EPA lists several versions. Combined ratings run from 25 MPG[26] to 41 MPG[4]. Annual fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
| Version | City / Hwy / Combined MPG | EPA annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L turbo, FWD (rating 1)[27] | 25 / 36 / 29 | $2,300 |
| 1.5L turbo, FWD (rating 2)[28] | 24 / 36 / 28 | $2,400 |
| 2.0L turbo, AWD[26] | 22 / 31 / 25 | $2,700 |
| 2.0L turbo, FWD[29] | 22 / 33 / 26 | $2,600 |
| 2.5L, FWD[30] | 22 / 33 / 26 | $2,600 |
| Hybrid, FWD[4] | 43 / 39 / 41 | $1,650 |
The Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid is rated 38 MPGe combined with 550 miles of range[31].
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the listed 4-door versions 5 stars overall and 5 stars in the frontal test[5][32][33]. Side is 4 stars for the AWD and one FWD version[5][32], and 5 stars for a second FWD version[33]. Rollover is 4 stars on all three, with a rollover risk of 10.9%[5][32][33].
Engine and size
EPA lists these engines, all 4-cylinder[34][35][36]. The 1.5L is rated 169 hp[34]. The 2.0L is rated 141 to 237 hp depending on version[35]. The 2.5L is rated 175 hp[36].

Should you buy a used 2016 Fusion?
The record is mixed. The listed 4-door versions earn 5 stars overall from NHTSA[5][32][33], but the model year also has 1,724 complaints and 13 recalls on file[1][3]. In the complaint samples we read, owners describe sudden power loss and stalling in the engine, power train and electrical groups[2][6][9]. Before you buy, run the VIN at NHTSA.gov and confirm each recall was done, especially the shifter bushing, steering wheel bolt and brake hoses[16][21][22], and ask about the phased rearview camera remedy[14]. Our data cannot tell you how reliable an individual car is.
