2024 Ford Maverick: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2024 Ford Maverick has 179 owner complaints on file with NHTSA[1] and 16 recalls[2]. The recall list deserves the closest look, because several recalls involve driving safety and some were repeated after an incorrect fix[3][4][5].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 179 owner complaints for the 2024 Maverick[1]. Eleven mention a crash, none mention a fire, and 6 injuries are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports. One complaint can name more than one component group, so the groups below overlap.
| Component group | Complaints | Crashes | Injuries |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical System[8] | 48 | 1 | 0 |
| Power Train[9] | 47 | 1 | 0 |
| Unknown Or Other[10] | 36 | 0 | 0 |
| Engine[11] | 27 | 0 | 0 |
| Brakes[12] | 20 | 5 | 1 |
| Speed Control[13] | 16 | 0 | 0 |
| Forward Collision Avoidance[14] | 13 | 4 | 2 |
| Steering[15] | 12 | 1 | 3 |
In a sample of complaint texts we read, owners describe these things. This is a small sample, so it shows what kinds of problems get reported, not how often they happen.
- Electrical. Owners of hybrid trucks describe the truck shutting down or losing drive power while moving, with a dashboard message telling them to stop. Others describe a "sleep mode" and a weak battery that leave remote features and lights off or call for a jump start[8].
- Power train. Owners describe losing power or being unable to accelerate while driving, sometimes cleared by a restart. A few describe the truck lurching forward when stopped with the brakes on[9].
- Engine. Owners describe the engine losing power or quitting at highway speed, and a weak 12-volt battery in hybrid trucks[11].
- Brakes. Owners describe a soft or sinking pedal, and braking that feels grabby or shudders at low speed. This group has 5 crashes among its 20 complaints[12].
Forward collision avoidance and steering are smaller groups, but they carry 4 crashes and 2 injuries[14] and 1 crash and 3 injuries[15]. We did not read their complaint texts, so we cannot say what owners describe there.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 16 recalls for the 2024 Maverick[2]. They are below, newest first. Some cover only part of the trucks, so check your own VIN on NHTSA.gov[16]. Three of them (25V133, 25V095 and 25V094) were issued because an earlier repair under a previous recall was done incorrectly[3][4][5].
- Front control arm ball joint (26V340). Ford says the front lower ball joints may have been installed or repaired wrongly at the factory, which can let a control arm come loose from the wheel. The risk is losing control and crashing. Owners are advised not to drive the truck until it is repaired. Dealers will inspect it and repair the joints as needed, free of charge[16].
- Trailer module lights and brakes (26V104). While towing, the trailer module can lose contact with the truck. Trailer brake lights and turn signals, or the trailer brakes, may stop working. The risk is less control of the trailer and less visibility to other drivers. The fix is a software update at a dealer or over the air, free of charge[17].
- Hybrid transmission software, expansion (25V881). The hybrid control software may shift the truck into neutral without warning, which cuts drive power. The risk is a crash. Dealers update the software, free of charge. Ford lists 87 vehicles, and this recall expands two earlier ones, 24V330 and 25V133[18].
- Engine block heater (25V685). The block heater may crack and leak coolant, which can short circuit it when it is plugged in. The risk is a fire. Owners are advised not to plug the heater in. The dealer repair is to replace the heater, and owners may instead have the heating element swapped for a plug with the cord removed. Ford listed the final remedy as anticipated for September 2026, so ask Ford or a dealer whether it is ready before assuming the truck can be repaired[19].
- Rearview camera software (25V442). A software error may leave the camera screen blank, or keep the image showing after the truck leaves reverse. The risk is a poor view behind the truck or a distracted driver. Dealers update the software, free of charge[20].
- Hybrid transmission software, repeat repair (25V133). This covers trucks whose earlier repair under 24V330 was done incorrectly. The problem is the same unexpected shift into neutral and loss of drive power, with crash risk. Dealers update the software, free of charge. Ford lists 207 vehicles[3].
- Tail lights, repeat repair (25V095). This covers trucks whose earlier repair under 24V293 was done incorrectly. The body control module may switch off one or both rear tail lights, which makes the truck harder for other drivers to see. Dealers update the software, free of charge. Ford lists 2,711 vehicles[4].
- Turn signal flash rate, repeat repair (25V094). This covers trucks whose earlier repair under 23V848 was done incorrectly. If a rear turn signal stops working, the truck does not change its flash rate to warn the driver. Other drivers then cannot tell the truck is turning. Dealers update the software, free of charge. Ford lists 1,635 vehicles[5].
- Child seat tether anchors (24V778). In a few 2024 trucks, the second-row tether anchors may not hold a child seat securely because the threads did not fully engage. The risk is injury in a crash. Dealers repair the anchor points, free of charge. Ford lists 6 vehicles[21].
- Rearview camera freeze (24V684). In trucks with Connected Touch Radios, the camera image may freeze while in reverse. The risk is poor rear visibility and a crash. Dealers update the radio software, free of charge[22].
- Windshield wiper motor (24V594). The front wiper motor may stop working, which cuts visibility in some conditions. Dealers inspect the motor and replace it as needed, free of charge[23].
- Hybrid transmission software (24V330). This is the first of the three transmission software recalls. The hybrid control software may shift the truck into neutral unexpectedly and cut drive power, with crash risk. Dealers update the software, free of charge. Ford lists 9,312 vehicles[24].
- Tail lights (24V293). The body control module may switch off one or both rear tail lights. The risk is lower visibility to other drivers. Dealers update the software, free of charge. Ford lists 242,669 vehicles[25].
- Tire and loading label (24V266). The label may show the wrong load capacity, tire pressure and spare tire size, which could lead to overloading. Ford mails new labels, free of charge. Ford lists 9 vehicles[26].
- Fuel tank (24V185). Some 2024 tanks may have an open seam where the two halves meet, which can let fuel leak. A leak near a spark can start a fire. Owners are advised to park and shut the engine off right away if they detect a leak or the warning lamp comes on. Dealers replace the tank, free of charge. Ford lists 217 vehicles[27].
- Turn signal flash rate (23V848). If a rear turn signal stops working, the truck does not change its flash rate to warn the driver. Other drivers then cannot tell the truck is turning. Dealers update the software, free of charge. Ford lists 189,814 vehicles[28].
Fuel economy
EPA rates four versions of the 2024 Maverick. Each combined figure is followed by EPA's estimated annual fuel cost.
| Version | City | Highway | Combined | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hybrid, front-wheel drive (2.5L 4-cyl)[6] | 42 | 33 | 37 | $1,800 |
| Front-wheel drive (2.0L 4-cyl turbo)[29] | 23 | 30 | 26 | $2,600 |
| All-wheel drive (2.0L 4-cyl turbo)[30] | 22 | 29 | 25 | $2,700 |
| Tremor all-wheel drive (2.0L 4-cyl turbo)[31] | 20 | 24 | 21 | $3,200 |
The hybrid rates highest, and it is the only version that does better in the city than on the highway. The Tremor rates lowest.
Safety ratings
NHTSA lists two sets of ratings, one for four-wheel drive (PU/CC 4WD) and one for front-wheel drive (PU/CC FWD)[7][32]. Both get 4 stars overall, 5 stars in frontal and side tests, and 4 stars for rollover[7][32]. NHTSA puts the rollover risk at 15.5% for the 4WD version[7] and 16.9% for the FWD version[32].
Engine and size
EPA lists a 2.0L 4-cylinder rated at 250 hp[33] and a 2.5L 4-cylinder rated at 162 hp[34].
Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US trucks. All three versions measure the same in length, width, height and wheelbase.
| Measure | All versions |
|---|---|
| Length[35][36][37] | 200 in |
| Width[35][36][37] | 72 in |
| Height[35][36][37] | 74 in |
| Wheelbase[35][36][37] | 121 in |
Curb weight differs by version.
How 2024 compares with other years
Show the numbers

|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 617 | 29 |
| 2023 | 347 | 22 |
| 2024 | 179 | 16 |
| 2025 | 50 | 12 |
| 2026 | 16 | 7 |
NHTSA counts complaints and recalls for each Maverick model year.
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2022[2] | 617 | 29 |
| 2023[2] | 347 | 22 |
| 2024[2] | 179 | 16 |
| 2025[2] | 50 | 12 |
| 2026[2] | 16 | 7 |
The 2024 model year ranks third of five on both complaints and recalls[2]. Two earlier years have more of each and two later years have fewer. These counts are not adjusted for sales, so a lower count does not prove a year is better.
Should you buy a used 2024 Maverick?
The 2024 Maverick sits in the middle of the model years on complaints and recalls[2], but its 16 recalls call for a careful VIN check on any used one. Ask the seller or a dealer to confirm that the front ball joint recall (26V340) and the block heater recall (25V685) have been dealt with, because the first tells owners not to drive until repaired and the second listed its final remedy as anticipated[16][19]. If the truck is a hybrid, also ask whether the transmission software recalls were completed, since that software was recalled three times[24][3][18]. Owners in our sample describe shutdowns, power loss and braking problems, but the sample is small and cannot tell you how often they happen[8][9][12]. Our data has no repair costs or reliability scores, so a pre-purchase inspection is a sensible addition.
