2002 Ford Taurus: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 1,426 owner complaints for the 2002 Taurus, more than for any other Taurus year it lists[1][2]. Suspension is the largest group of complaints, and the car has 3 recalls on file[3][4][5][6].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 1,426 complaints with NHTSA[1]. In them, 75 mention a crash[1], 11 a fire[1] and 44 injuries[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports and are not adjusted for how many cars were sold. One complaint can name more than one part.
Suspension. This is the largest group by far, with 962 complaints[3]. The median mileage at failure is 84,000 miles[3]. In a sample of complaints we read, owners describe a front coil spring that broke and punctured a tire. Others describe front or rear vibration[3].
Visibility. There are 98 complaints, with a median mileage of 59,400[8]. In the sample we read, owners describe windshield leaks, delays getting parts for the windshield recall, and wipers that stopped working[8].
Speed control. There are 76 complaints[9]. They include 16 crashes and 6 injuries, and the median mileage is 101,000[9]. In the sample we read, owners describe the car surging forward or speeding up without warning. Some say the brake and gas pedals sit too close together[9].
Engine. There are 61 complaints, with a median mileage of 62,200[10]. In the sample we read, owners describe the engine stalling or losing power while driving. A smaller number describe a fire in the engine compartment[10].
Smaller groups:
Recalls
NHTSA lists 3 recalls for this model year, newest first[2].
- Stop lamp switch (04V106). A faulty brake light switch or its wiring could stop the brake lights from working or keep them on all the time. A following driver could be confused, which could lead to a crash. If the switch fails open, the driver may not be able to shift out of park. If it fails closed, cruise control cannot be used and the battery could drain. Dealers replace the switch and wiring with a new design[4].
- Windshield mounting (03V087). The windshield may not meet a federal mounting standard. It may leak, make wind noise and rattle. It could also come loose and protect occupants less in a crash. Dealers replace the windshield[5].
- Pedal spacing (02V266). The brake and gas pedals on cars with adjustable pedals could sit too close together. Pressing both at once could raise engine speed and feel like the car cannot be stopped. Owners are told how to set the pedals, and a dealer measures the gap and adjusts it if it is under 50 mm[6].
Ask a Ford dealer whether the recalls were done on a specific car.
Fuel economy
The EPA lists several versions of the 3.0L 6-cylinder with a 4-speed automatic and front-wheel drive[7][15][16][17]. Ratings are in MPG.
| Version | City | Highway | Combined | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taurus, Regular[7] | 18 | 25 | 21 | $3,200 |
| Taurus, Regular[15] | 18 | 25 | 20 | $3,350 |
| Taurus Wagon, Regular[16] | 17 | 24 | 20 | $3,350 |
| Taurus Wagon, Regular[17] | 17 | 24 | 19 | $3,550 |
| Taurus, Gasoline or E85[18] | 18 | 25 | 21 | $3,200 |
| Taurus Wagon, Gasoline or E85[19] | 17 | 24 | 19 | $3,550 |
The EPA fuel cost uses current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA lists its 5-Star Safety Ratings for three versions of this year, including a 4-door wagon, as not rated[20][21][22]. We cannot say how the car would score.
Engine and size
The EPA listings above are for a 3.0L 6-cylinder engine[7]. Size figures below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.

Among the 25 Taurus model years NHTSA lists, 2002 has the most complaints at 1,426[2]. The next highest are 2003 with 1,223 and 1995 with 1,214[2]. Recall counts range from 0 to 9 across the 25 years[2]. The 2002 total of 3 is lower than 13 of them, and 2001 and 2013 are highest at 9[2]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, so treat them as a rough guide.
Should you buy a used 2002 Taurus?
The complaint count is the highest of any Taurus year listed, and suspension reports lead it[1][3][2]. In the sample we read, owners describe broken front coil springs and sudden surges of speed, so consider having the suspension inspected before you buy[3][9]. Ask a Ford dealer whether all 3 recalls were done on the car you are considering[4][5][6]. Fuel economy of 19 to 21 MPG combined and annual fuel costs of $3,200 to $3,550 are worth weighing against your driving[7][17]. NHTSA has no crash ratings for this year, so there is no star score to lean on[20].
