2025 GMC Canyon: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 8 owner complaints on file for the 2025 GMC Canyon[1]. The truck also has 2 recalls, and both list a dealer fix[2][3].
Most reported problems
Complaints are owner reports sent to NHTSA. They are not verified, and one complaint can name more than one component. None of the 8 reports mention a crash, a fire or a death, and 1 mentions an injury[1].
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Brakes[7] | 3 |
| Forward collision avoidance[8] | 2 |
| Engine[9] | 2 |
| Unknown or other[10] | 2 |
| Electrical system[11] | 2 |
| Seats[12] | 1 |
| Speed control[13] | 1 |
Brakes has the most complaints, but the numbers are small. In the sample of complaints we read, owners describe brake warnings and a brake system failure on trucks with low mileage. One owner says a master cylinder was named as the cause and the part was delayed[7]. The forward collision avoidance group in our sample holds the same brake report, filed under two groups at once[8].
In the engine group, the sample describes a coolant leak found under the front of a parked truck. It had not been diagnosed when the owner wrote[9].
In the electrical group, one owner describes a chime in cold weather with no message on the display. Another describes the truck speeding up on its own while coasting, then stopping once the driver braked[11].
The single injury is tied to the seats group[12].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 2 recalls for this model year[4], newest first.
- Owner's manual (26V114). Dated 2026-02-26[2]. The radio was not set during production to download the electronic owner's manual, so the truck does not meet a federal occupant protection rule. Without the manual, owners may not know how to use the vehicle safely. Dealers reset the radio so the manual downloads on its own. Owner letters were mailed April 16, 2026[2]. The recall also covers many other GM models[2].
- Passenger air bag software (25V856). Dated 2025-12-11[3]. It covers the Canyon AT4X AEV[3]. Wrong software in the sensing and diagnostic module may fire the second stage of the passenger air bag when only the first is meant to go off. An air bag that deploys wrongly raises the risk of injury in a crash. Dealers update the software. Owner letters were mailed January 30, 2026[3].
Fuel economy
All four EPA entries list a 2.7L 4-cylinder turbo, an 8-speed automatic and regular fuel[5][14][15][16].
| Version | City / Highway / Combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| Canyon 2WD[5] | 19 / 23 / 20 | $3,350 |
| Canyon 4WD[14] | 17 / 21 / 19 | $3,550 |
| Canyon AT4X 4WD[15] | 17 / 17 / 17 | $3,950 |
| Canyon AT4X AEV 4WD[16] | 16 / 16 / 16 | $4,200 |
EPA bases the annual cost on its current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the truck was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 4WD crew cab pickup 4 stars overall, 4 stars in the frontal test, 5 stars in the side test and 3 stars for rollover[6]. The rear-wheel-drive version has the same four ratings[17].
Engine and size
The 2.7L 4-cylinder is rated at 310 hp in the EPA test car list[18]. These dimensions are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US trucks.

NHTSA shows 8 complaints and 2 recalls for the 2025 Canyon[4]. Among the model years listed, that is the lowest complaint count, tied with 2010 and 2026 at 8 each[4]. Years such as 2024 (207 complaints), 2015 (303) and 2016 (271) sit far higher[4].
On recalls, 2019 and 2020 show none, while 2025 has 2 and 2015 has 8[4]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, so a low count can also reflect fewer trucks or less time on the road.
Should you buy a used 2025 Canyon?
The complaint record is short, with 8 reports on file[1]. The brake reports are few, but they describe a serious symptom, so ask a dealer about brake service history[7]. Check the VIN for both recalls, since each has a dealer fix described[2][3]. Fuel economy varies by version, from 20 combined MPG for 2WD to 16 for the AT4X AEV[5][16]. Our data does not cover towing, oil capacity or reliability scores.
