2025 GMC Sierra: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 130 owner complaints on file for the 2025 GMC Sierra, and the engine group is the largest[1][2]. The model year also has 2 recalls on file, both covering few vehicles[3][4][5].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 130 owner complaints for the 2025 Sierra[1]. Four mention a crash, one a fire and one injuries, and none report a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component, so the groups below overlap.
- Engine: 61 complaints, median mileage at failure 21,100, no crashes, fires or injuries[2]
- Power train: 28 complaints, 1 crash and 1 fire[8]
- Electrical system: 26 complaints, 2 crashes[9]
- Unknown or other: 16 complaints, 1 crash and 1 fire[10]
- Forward collision avoidance: 12 complaints, 2 crashes, 1 fire and 1 injury[11]
- Fuel/propulsion system: 9 complaints, no crashes, fires or injuries[12]
- Visibility/wiper: 8 complaints[13]
- Brakes: 8 complaints[14]
We read a small sample of the complaint texts in the biggest groups. In the engine group, owners describe the engine stopping or losing power while driving, and some say it seized and had to be replaced[2]. In the power train group, owners describe a sudden loss of acceleration along with a harsh shift or a transmission message, and some describe the truck moving or changing gear on its own[8]. In the electrical group, owners describe radio and audio dropouts and cameras that go dark or look dim at night[9]. In the forward collision avoidance group, owners describe cruise control that surges at low speed, a driver assist service message and hard unexpected braking[11].
These samples are small. Read them as examples of what owners report, not as proof of how often a problem happens.
Recalls
NHTSA shows 2 recalls for the 2025 model year[3]. Both are small.
- Wheelchair restraints (25V876). Filed 2025-12-17[4]. Rollx recalled wheelchair restraint retractors that may not lock on vans and other vehicles that include the Sierra, so a wheelchair might not be held in place[4]. The risk is injury if the wheelchair moves during a trip[4]. The fix is an inspection and replacement of retractors where needed, and owner letters were mailed on February 5, 2026[4]. Potentially affected units: 86[4].
- Rear center seat belt bolt (25V015). Filed 2025-01-16[5]. This one covers the Sierra EV, along with a Silverado EV, and 5 trucks are potentially affected[5]. A bolt holding the rear center seat belt may not have been tightened properly, so the belt might not restrain a rider as intended in a crash[5]. GM will tighten the bolt. The affected trucks were still in dealer inventory, so no owner letters were planned[5].
Fuel economy
EPA lists many versions of the 2025 Sierra. Combined mpg varies by engine and drive type in the ratings below.
- 3.0L diesel: 26 combined in 2WD[6], 24 in 4WD[15], 23 with mud terrain tires[16], 19 for the AT4X[17]
- 2.7L turbo 4-cylinder: 19 combined in 2WD[18][19], 17 to 18 in 4WD[20][21], 16 with mud terrain tires[22]
- 5.3L 8-cylinder: 17 to 18 combined in 2WD[23][24], 16 to 17 in 4WD[25][26], 15 to 16 for cab chassis versions[27][28]
- 6.2L 8-cylinder: 16 combined in 4WD[29], 15 with mud terrain tires or in the AT4X[30][31]
- Sierra EV: 64 MPGe combined and 390 miles of range[32]
EPA's estimated annual fuel cost runs from $3,550 for the 2.7L in 2WD[18] to $5,500 for the 6.2L with mud terrain tires[30]. EPA uses its current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the truck was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives every listed configuration 5 stars overall[7][33][34][35][36][37][38]. Two PU/CC configurations get 4 stars in the frontal test[34][36]. Rollover is 4 stars across the board[7][38]. NHTSA's rollover risk is 19.1% to 19.8% for the Sierra 1500 entries[7][34] and 11.1% for the Sierra EV[38].
Engine and size
EPA lists these horsepower ratings for the 2025 Sierra:
- 2.7L 4-cylinder: 310 hp[39]
- 3.0L 6-cylinder: 305 hp[40]
- 5.3L 8-cylinder: 355 hp[41]
- 6.2L 8-cylinder: 420 hp[42]
- Electric motor: 645 hp[43]
Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US trucks[44].

Among the Sierra model years NHTSA lists from 1995 to 2026, 2025 has the fewest complaints at 130[3]. The next lowest are 2012 with 146 and 2026 with 148[3]. Its 2 recalls tie the lowest count, shared with 1996 and 1998[3]. For comparison, 2024 has 377 complaints and 4 recalls, and 2014 has the highest complaint count at 858 and the most recalls at 20[3].
Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, so a low count does not prove a model year is more reliable.
Should you buy a used 2025 Sierra?
The numbers look light next to other Sierra years, with 130 complaints and 2 small recalls on file[3]. Safety ratings are 5 stars overall on every listed configuration[7][33][34][35][36][37][38]. The engine group is the largest set of complaints, with owners in a small sample describing stalls, power loss and seized engines[2]. Counts are not adjusted for sales, so treat them as a prompt to ask questions, not as a verdict. Check the exact truck's recall status and service history before you decide.
