2013 Honda Fit: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2013 Honda Fit has 176 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, and air bags are the biggest group[1][2]. Seven of its recalls involve air bags, so check the VIN before you buy[3][4][5][6][7][8][9].
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 176 owner complaints on file for the 2013 Honda Fit[1]. Fourteen mention a crash, 4 mention a fire and 16 mention injuries[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one part.
The biggest group by count is air bags, with 92 complaints[2]. The median mileage at failure for those is 18,100[2]. In a sample of 12 air bag complaints we read, 10 are about the air bag inflator recalls, with owners describing worry about the recall or delays in getting repair parts[2]. One sample complaint says the air bags did not deploy in a rear-end crash[2].
The next groups are:
- Electrical system: 22 complaints, median 26,000 miles[13]. In a sample of 12, owners describe a dead battery or a car that would not start in 4, and a dashboard that is hard to read in bright light in 3[13].
- Engine: 15 complaints, median 28,900 miles[14]. In a sample of 12, owners describe stalling or the engine cutting out in 6, and spark plug problems, some with damaged coils, in 3[14].
- Power train: 12 complaints, median 75,000 miles[15]. In a sample of 10, owners describe a broken axle or drive shaft in 7, and some of those link it to a recall[15].
Smaller groups include structure with 9 complaints[16], electronic stability control with 9[17] and speed control with 8[18]. Twelve more are filed under unknown or other[19]. With counts this small, we do not treat these as common problems.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 10 recalls for the 2013 Fit[10]. Newest first:
- Remedy pending
Driveshaft (20V770). Honda says the protective coating on some drive shafts may not have been applied properly, which makes them more open to damage from road salt. A broken drive shaft can cause a sudden loss of drive power. The car could also roll away if the parking brake is not set. It covers 2009-2013 Fits originally sold or ever registered in certain states listed in the notice. The remedy is not yet available. Honda mailed an interim letter and says it will send a second letter when the remedy is ready. The plan is for dealers to inspect the drive shafts and replace one if needed, free of charge.[20] - Passenger air bag inflator (19V502). Some passenger front air bag inflators that were installed as replacement parts may explode after long exposure to humidity and heat. Metal fragments could hit occupants and cause serious injury or death. Dealers replace the inflator free of charge.[3]
- Driver air bag inflator (19V500). Some driver front air bag inflators that were installed as replacement parts have the same explosion risk from humidity and heat. Dealers replace the inflator free of charge.[4]
- Passenger air bag installation (19V378). A replacement passenger air bag inflator may have been installed incorrectly. It may not deploy properly in a crash, which raises the risk of injury. Dealers inspect the installation and replace the module if needed, free of charge.[5]
- Passenger air bag inflator (18V661). Some front air bag inflators may explode after long exposure to humidity, heat and temperature swings. Whether a Fit is covered depends on the model year and the state where it was registered. Dealers replace the passenger inflator free of charge. The risk is serious injury or death from metal fragments.[6]
- Passenger air bag installation (18V268). A replacement front passenger air bag may have been installed incorrectly and may deploy improperly in a crash. Dealers inspect it and replace the module if needed, free of charge.[7]
- Passenger air bag inflator (18V042). Some inflators may explode after long exposure to humidity and heat, with the risk of serious injury or death from metal fragments. Coverage depends on model year and the state where the car was registered. Dealers replace the passenger inflator free of charge.[8]
- Driver air bag inflator (16V061). A dual-stage driver air bag inflator may take in moisture over time and could rupture in a crash. Metal fragments could cause serious injury or death. Dealers replace the inflator free of charge.[9]
- Driveshaft (14V258). The passenger side driveshaft on some 2013 Fits with a manual transmission, built May 24 through July 5, 2013, may break because of improper heat treatment. The car would lose power and coast to a stop, or could move unexpectedly if parked without the parking brake. Dealers inspect the shaft and replace it if needed, free of charge.[21]
- Stability control (13V157). The electronic stability control on certain 2012-2013 Fit Sport and base models may allow too much yaw at high steering angles with certain tires. That raises crash risk. Dealers update the software free of charge.[22]
Recalls apply to certain vehicles. Which cars are covered depends on build date, trim or state, as the notices say.
Fuel economy
EPA lists three gasoline versions of the Fit with a 1.5L 4-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive:
| Transmission | City / Highway / Combined MPG | EPA annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| Manual 5-spd[23] | 27 / 33 / 29 | $2,300 |
| Automatic 5-spd[11] | 28 / 35 / 31 | $2,150 |
| Automatic (S5)[24] | 27 / 33 / 30 | $2,250 |
The annual cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
The Fit EV is rated 118 MPGe combined (132 city, 105 highway) with 82 miles of range[25].
Safety ratings
NHTSA rates the 2013 Fit (5 HB FWD) 4 stars overall, with 4 stars each for frontal, side and rollover[12]. The rollover risk is 12.4%[12]. A second 5 HB FWD listing from NHTSA shows as not rated[26].
Engine and size
EPA lists the Fit with the 1.5L 4-cylinder at 117 hp[27]. The Fit with an electric motor is listed at 123 hp[28].
Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models. They are for the 4-door hatch FWD DX/LX/Sport[29].

NHTSA has 176 complaints and 10 recalls on file for the 2013 Fit[10]. Counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so read them loosely.
- Complaints: 2013 has more than 2011 and 2012 (113 each)[10], and more than 2016 through 2020. It has fewer than 2007 (370), 2009 (287), 2015 (285), 2008 (217) and 2010 (184)[10]. 2014 shows no complaints on file[10].
- Recalls: 2013 has 10[10]. 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012 have 11 each, and 2010 has 12[10]. 2008 has 8, and 2014 through 2020 have 6 or fewer[10].
Should you buy a used 2013 Fit?
The record shows 10 recalls, seven of them involving air bags, and for those dealers inspect or replace parts free of charge[10][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Optional: keep it, or write 'Recall coverage depends on build date, trim or state, so ask which recalls apply to the car.' The driveshaft recall 20V770 has no remedy yet, so ask whether the car is covered[20]. Owner complaints about broken axles or drive shafts show up in the power train sample, though the group is small at 12 complaints[15]. Fuel economy of 29 to 31 MPG combined and a 4-star overall NHTSA rating are the other facts to weigh[23][11][24][12].
