2019 Honda Insight: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2019 Honda Insight has 99 owner complaints on file with NHTSA[1] and 8 recalls to check before you buy[2]. It also earns top NHTSA crash-test marks, shown in the tiles below[3].
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 99 owner complaints on file for the 2019 Insight[1]. Of those, 12 mention a crash, 1 a fire and 6 injuries[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several components.
The five largest component groups:
| Component group | Complaints | Crashes | Median miles at failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forward collision avoidance[5] | 17 | 4 | 40,000 |
| Fuel system, gasoline[6] | 15 | 0 | 125,000 |
| Electrical system[7] | 14 | 2 | 15,618 |
| Unknown or other[8] | 14 | 2 | 8,500 |
| Brakes[9] | 12 | 5 | 44,154 |
Smaller groups include fuel/propulsion with 9 complaints[10], air bags with 8[11] and engine with 7[12]. The air bag group lists 4 crashes, 1 fire and 4 injuries[11].
We also read a small sample of complaint texts for the top groups. Counts below are texts in our sample, not shares of all owners, and some texts repeat.
- Forward collision avoidance. In a sample of 12 texts, about half describe automatic braking or a collision warning that triggered with nothing ahead[5]. Another 4 describe a camera fault that switched off cruise control, lane and braking assist features[5].
- Electrical system. In a sample of 12 texts, 6 describe backup camera, side camera or touch screen glitches[7]. Another 4 describe warning lights or driver-assist alerts[7].
- Brakes. In a sample of 12 texts, 5 describe the car braking on its own without a reason[9]. Another 4 describe a car that did not stop, or kept moving, while the driver was braking[9].
- Fuel system. In a sample of 12 texts, 9 come from owners who had a notice for recall 23V858 and said the repair part was not yet available[6].
The complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 8 recalls for this model year[2]. Newest first:
- Passenger seat weight sensor (26V332). The weight sensor in the front passenger seat can crack and cause a short circuit. That can make the air bags go off unintentionally in a crash, which raises the risk of injury. Dealers will replace the sensors for free[13].
- Fuel pump (23V858). The fuel pump inside the tank may fail. The engine can then stall while driving, which raises the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the fuel pump module for free. This recall expands earlier ones[14].
- Seat belt buckle (23V158). A manufacturing issue can keep the front seat belt buckle from latching. An unlatched belt cannot protect you in a crash. Dealers will replace the release buttons or the buckle assemblies for free[15].
- Fuel pump (21V215). The low-pressure fuel pump in the tank may fail and stall the engine while driving. Dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly for free[16].
- Body control module software (20V771). A software error can disrupt communication between the body control module and other parts. Wipers, defroster, rearview camera, exterior lights and power windows may malfunction. Dealers will update the software for free. The recall was set to begin February 22, 2021[17].
- Fuel pump (20V314). The low-pressure fuel pump in the tank may fail and stall the engine while driving. Dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly for free[18].
- Air bag control module (18V664). The restraint control unit may have a manufacturing error. The air bags or seat belt pretensioners might not work in a crash. Dealers will replace the unit for free. This recall covers 118 vehicles across three Honda models[19].
- Backup camera display (18V629). The backup camera display may not work properly in some situations, so it may not show what is behind the car. Dealers will reprogram the display audio unit software for free[20].
Ask the seller whether each of these repairs was done.
Fuel economy
The EPA rates the Insight with its 1.5L 4-cylinder engine and automatic (variable gear ratios) at 55 city, 49 highway and 52 combined MPG[4]. It runs on regular gas and is front-wheel drive[4]. The EPA estimates yearly fuel cost at $1,300[4].
The Insight Touring is rated 51 city, 45 highway and 48 combined MPG, with an estimated yearly fuel cost of $1,400[21].
Safety ratings
In NHTSA 5-Star Safety Ratings for the 4-door front-wheel-drive car, the Insight earns 5 stars overall[3]. It also gets 5 stars in frontal, side and rollover tests[3]. NHTSA puts its rollover risk at 9.3%[3].
Engine and size
The EPA test car list shows the 2019 Insight with a 1.5L 4-cylinder engine rated at 107 hp[22].
Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications for the 4-door sedan, converted to inches and pounds[23].

NHTSA has these totals for the Insight model years that follow the 2019 one[2]:
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | 99 | 8 |
| 2020 | 31 | 6 |
| 2021 | 25 | 3 |
| 2022 | 33 | 3 |
Among these four years, 2019 has the most complaints and the most recalls. It is not the highest across every year on file. The 2010 model year has 119 complaints and 10 recalls, and 2011 also has 10 recalls[2]. Counts are not adjusted for sales, so treat them as a rough guide.
Should you buy a used 2019 Insight?
On paper the 2019 Insight looks good, with 5-star NHTSA ratings[3] and a combined rating of 52 MPG, or 48 MPG for the Touring[4][21]. The downside is a long recall list: three of the 8 recalls involve a fuel pump that can fail and stall the engine, and others involve air bags, seat belts and the backup camera[14][16][18][13][15][19][20]. Before buying, ask for proof that each repair was done. In the complaint texts we read, owners describe automatic braking and camera problems, so test the driver-assist features on a drive[5][7]. Our data does not cover price, reliability scores or repair costs.
