2019 Honda Passport: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2019 Honda Passport has 282 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, more than any other Passport model year listed[1][2]. It also has 10 recalls, so check any car you are considering by VIN[2].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 282 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Seven mention a crash, none a fire, and none a death. The complaints report 5 injuries in total[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several components.
The largest groups by complaint count:
- Electrical system: 86 complaints, no crashes or injuries[5].
- Unknown or other: 55 complaints, 1 crash[6].
- Forward collision avoidance: 55 complaints, 2 crashes and 3 injuries[7].
- Engine: 53 complaints, no crashes or injuries[8].
- Power train: 25 complaints, no crashes or injuries[9].
- Brakes: 23 complaints, 1 crash[10].
- Fuel system, gasoline: 23 complaints, 1 crash and 1 injury[11].
- Lane departure: 18 complaints[12].
We also read a small sample of complaint texts for four of these groups. These are themes in that sample, not a measure of how common they are.
Electrical. In the sample, 9 of 12 texts describe infotainment, audio or instrument display problems[5]. Owners describe screens going blank or rebooting, sound cutting out, and a display that sometimes returns after the car is restarted[5]. The median mileage at failure for the group is 4,860[5].
Power train. Owners describe the car suddenly shifting into neutral or losing drive, including at stops. This is a theme in the small sample we read[9].
Engine. Owners describe the engine stalling or not restarting after the auto start/stop feature shut it off at a light. This showed up in 5 of 12 sample texts[8].
Forward collision avoidance. Owners describe false alerts or sudden braking with nothing ahead. All the texts in the sample describe this, though several are repeats[7]. This group has the most injuries of any group listed, at 3[7].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 10 recalls for this model year[2]. Newest first:
- Remedy pending
Rear subframe (26V365). Honda is recalling certain Passports sold in a list of states, where the rear subframe can corrode at the suspension mounting points. A failed rear suspension part can cause a loss of handling and control. The fix is an inspection and a reinforcement kit, with repairs as needed. The remedy is not yet available. Interim letters went out July 27, 2026, and the final remedy is anticipated in the fall of 2026[13]. - Passenger seat weight sensor (26V332). The sensor can crack and short circuit, which can make the air bags deploy unintentionally in a crash and raise the risk of injury. Dealers replace the sensor free of charge. Letters were mailed July 7, 2026[14].
- Fuel pump (23V858). The in-tank fuel pump may fail, which can stall the engine while driving. Dealers replace the fuel pump module free of charge[15].
- Rearview camera cable (23V431). A faulty cable connector can keep the rearview camera image from appearing. Dealers replace the cable harness and add a cover over the connector[16].
- Hood latch (21V932). The hood latch striker can become damaged and separate, so the hood could open while driving and block the view. Dealers repair the striker or replace the hood[17].
- Fuel pump (21V215). The low-pressure fuel pump in the tank may fail and stall the engine. Dealers replace the fuel pump assembly free of charge[18].
- Tires (21V165). Some Continental tires may have been cured too long, which can cause sidewall breaks or tread loss. Dealers inspect all four tires and replace them as needed. About 1,093 Passport and Pilot vehicles combined were potentially affected[19].
- Instrument panel software (20V439). Wrong software can leave the instrument panel blank on key readings and can stop the rearview camera image. Dealers reprogram the software[20].
- Central network software (20V440). Software errors can delay or block the rearview camera image. Owners can install the update themselves or have a dealer do it, free of charge[21].
- Body welds (19V784). The recall potentially affected 10 vehicles, Pilot and Passport combined[22]. Front frame members may not be fully welded to the body. Dealers inspect for missing welds and, if found, offer a repurchase or a similar replacement vehicle[22].
Fuel economy
Both versions use a 3.5L 6-cylinder engine with an Automatic (S9) and regular gas[3][23].
- Front-wheel drive: 20 city, 25 highway, 22 combined MPG[3]. EPA estimates $3,050 a year in fuel[3].
- All-wheel drive: 19 city, 24 highway, 21 combined MPG[23]. EPA estimates $3,200 a year in fuel[23].
EPA's annual cost uses its current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the all-wheel-drive Passport 5 stars overall, 4 stars frontal, 5 stars side and 4 stars rollover, with a rollover risk of 17.4%[4]. The front-wheel-drive version has the same star ratings and a rollover risk of 16.9%[24].
Engine and size
EPA lists the 3.5L 6-cylinder at 280 hp[25]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models[26].

Should you buy a used 2019 Passport?
The 2019 Passport has a 5-star overall NHTSA rating[4][24]. It also has the highest complaint count of the model years listed and ties 2020 for the most recalls[2]. Before buying, look up the VIN for open recalls. The rear subframe recall has no final remedy yet, so ask whether the car is in the affected states and what the seller knows[13]. Owners in our sample also describe infotainment dropouts, sudden neutral and false collision braking, so test drive with those in mind[5][7][9].
