2018 Land Rover Range Rover: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 133 owner complaints on file for the 2018 Range Rover, led by engine and electrical reports[1][2]. NHTSA lists 8 recalls[3], from camera and software issues to a fuel rail leak[4][5][6].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 133 owner complaints for the 2018 Range Rover[7]. Five mention a crash, 3 a fire and 10 an injury[7]. No deaths are reported[7]. These are owner reports, not verified findings.
One complaint can name several parts, so the groups below add up to more than the 133 total[7]. The biggest groups are:
- Engine: 48 complaints, with a median of 48,000 miles at failure[1].
- Electrical system: 34 complaints, with a median of 2,860 miles at failure[2].
- Unknown or other: 30 complaints[9].
- Power train: 12 complaints[10].
- Fuel/propulsion system: 10 complaints[11].
- Visibility/wiper: 10 complaints[12].
- Structure: 9 complaints[13].
- Speed control: 7 complaints[14].
We read a small sample of complaint texts for four of these groups. The counts below only describe that sample. They do not tell you how common a problem is among all owners.
Electrical system. In a sample of 12 complaints we read, 8 describe instrument displays or touch screens going dark or freezing, sometimes while driving[2]. Three describe fogged windows that would not clear[2]. Four describe a sudden loss of power or a full shutdown while driving[2].
Engine. In a sample of 12 complaints, 6 describe losing power or the engine shutting off while driving[1]. Three involve the cooling system, such as a leak, a failed pipe or fan noise[1]. Two describe a delay when pulling away from a stop[1].
Fuel/propulsion system. In a sample of 8 complaints, 3 describe losing power while driving, 2 describe a delay when accelerating from a stop and 2 describe a fuel smell or leak[11].
Power train. In a sample of 10 complaints, 2 describe the vehicle moving into reverse from park on its own and 2 describe coolant leaks or overheating[10].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 8 recalls for this model year[3]. They are below, newest first. Some cover only certain models, and each bullet says which.
- Rearview camera, second remedy (24V364). Covers certain 2018 to 2022 Range Rover Sport vehicles with a Surround Camera System. Water can get into the camera, so the image may not show or may look distorted. That lowers rear visibility and raises the risk of a crash or injury. Dealers inspect the camera, then fit a new seal or replace and calibrate the camera, free of charge. These vehicles were recalled earlier under 24V023 and need this new remedy as well[4].
- Remedy pending
Rearview camera (24V023). Same water problem, covering certain 2018 to 2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles. Dealers inspect the camera and then either seal it again or swap it out at no cost[15]. For Sport owners, remedy parts were not yet available when it was issued, and a second notice was to follow[15]. - Auto high beam indicator (21V117). Covers certain 2018 to 2020 Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Discovery and Velar vehicles. The instrument cluster may not show when the automatic high beams are on, so the driver may not know, which reduces visibility for oncoming traffic. Dealers update the software, free of charge[5].
- Back-up camera (19V603). Covers certain 2018 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles with Continental surround camera systems. The camera may fail to show the image in reverse. Dealers reprogram the infotainment software, free of charge[16].
- Automatic emergency braking (18V625). Covers certain 2018 Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery vehicles. The braking system may switch off without telling the driver. Dealers update the software, free of charge[17].
- Defogging (18V139). Covers certain 2018 Velar vehicles. The air inlet door linkages may come loose, so the system may not clear fog from the windshield and windows. Dealers update the software that controls the actuator arm, free of charge[18].
- Tire pressure monitor (18V088). Covers certain 2018 Evoque convertibles with 20-inch wheels[19]. The warning light may not come on when a tire is 25% low on pressure[19]. Dealers correct the setting, free of charge[19].
- Fuel rail (18V087). Covers certain 2018 Evoque, Velar and Discovery Sport vehicles with a 2.0L gasoline engine[6]. The fuel rail end caps may leak, which can raise the risk of a fire. Dealers replace the fuel rail, free of charge[6].

NHTSA's counts for the Range Rover name across all model years put 2018 at 133 complaints and 8 recalls[3]. Four years have more complaints: 2015 with 190, 2016 with 203, 2017 with 172 and 2020 with 143[3]. The year before, 2017, had 172 complaints and 10 recalls, and the year after, 2019, had 80 complaints and 8 recalls[3].
On recalls, 2018 has fewer recalls than several later years. 2020 has 23, 2022 has 17 and 2023 has 16[3]. These counts are not adjusted for how many vehicles were sold, and the Range Rover name covers several models, so use them as a rough guide only.
Should you buy a used 2018 Range Rover?
The 2018 listing has 133 complaints, with engine and electrical reports leading[7][1][2]. In the sample we read, owners describe screens going dark and losing power while driving, so ask for a full test drive and a service history[2][1]. The camera recalls cover both the Range Rover and the Sport, and Sport vehicles need the newer remedy as well as the earlier one[4][15][16]. Fuel costs vary a lot by version, from $3,300 to $5,500 a year by EPA's estimates[20][26].
