2013 Mercedes-Benz C-Class: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 565 owner complaints for the 2013 C-Class, and the air bags are the most named component[1][2]. The car also has recalls on file, so check that each one has been done before you buy or keep it[3].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 565 complaints with NHTSA[1]. Of those, 23 mention a crash, 7 a fire and 25 injuries, with no deaths reported[1]. These are unverified reports, and one complaint can name several components[1]. The counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold.
The largest groups by complaint count:
| Component group | Complaints | Median miles at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Air bags[2] | 280 | 61,000 |
| Suspension[5] | 73 | 97,400 |
| Structure[6] | 71 | 80,000 |
| Engine[7] | 58 | 64,500 |
| Steering[8] | 46 | 68,515 |
Air bags. This group has the most complaints by a wide margin[2]. In the sample of 12 air bag complaints we read, 6 describe air bags that did not deploy in a crash and 4 describe an air bag warning light or "disabled" message[2]. The group lists 17 crashes, 2 fires and 20 injuries[2].
Suspension. In a sample of 12 complaints we read, 8 describe a rusted rear subframe, often with the car pulling to one side when braking[5]. Dealers or mechanics found the rust in these reports.
Structure. In a sample of 12 complaints we read, 8 describe a broken inside door handle that stops the driver from opening the door from inside[6]. Some of those owners say they rolled the window down to get out. Two other samples describe rust on the rear subframe[6].
Engine. In a sample of 12 complaints we read, 9 describe hesitation, stalling or loss of power when accelerating[7]. The engine group lists 4 fires[7]. Two of the 12 sampled texts describe an engine fire or a fire after a crash[7].
Steering has 46 complaints, electrical 33 and fuel/propulsion 27[8][9][10].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 7 recalls for this model year[3]. Newest first:
- Front passenger air bag (21V638). An incorrect front passenger air bag may have been installed during an earlier repair, so it may not work properly in a crash[11]. The fix is a replacement passenger air bag at a dealer, free of charge[11].
- Emergency call clock (19V787). A software fault can make the date and time in the emergency call system wrong, which may send an inaccurate vehicle location and delay help[12]. The fix is an over-the-air update, or a dealer software update if needed, free of charge[12].
- Passenger air bag inflator (19V010). The inflator in the passenger air bag may explode as its propellant degrades after long exposure to humidity and temperature swings, and metal fragments could cause serious injury or death[13]. Dealers replace the passenger air bag module free of charge, and the recall began March 29, 2019[13].
- Passenger air bag inflator (18V043). This is the same kind of inflator problem, with the same risk of fragments in a crash[14]. The remedy is a replacement passenger air bag module at a dealer, free of charge[14]. Mercedes sent owners an interim notice on February 23, 2018, and a second notice is planned when parts are ready[14].
- Driver air bag grounding (17V627). The driver air bag could deploy unexpectedly if static electricity discharges and the clockspring breaks, which raises the risk of injury and a crash[15]. Dealers add grounding to the steering parts, free of charge[15].
- Steering coupling bolt (17V252). A steering coupling bolt may not have been tightened enough, which could cause a loss of steering[16]. Dealers inspect the bolt and tighten it as needed, free of charge[16].
- Air bag control software (17V177). Some control units may have received the wrong software, which could affect air bag deployment in a crash[17]. Dealers update the software free of charge[17].
The inflator recalls carry the most serious stated risk, serious injury or death from fragments in a crash[13][14]. Ask a dealer to check the VIN for open recalls, and confirm in particular that the 18V043 remedy is available before you count on a fix[14].
Fuel economy
EPA ratings depend on the engine. The annual cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
| Version | City / highway / combined MPG | EPA annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| C250, 1.8L 4-cyl turbo[18] | 22 / 31 / 25 | $3,300 |
| C250 Coupe, 1.8L 4-cyl turbo[4] | 21 / 31 / 25 | $3,300 |
| C350, 3.5L 6-cyl[19] | 20 / 28 / 23 | $3,550 |
| C300 4matic, 3.5L 6-cyl[20] | 19 / 28 / 22 | $3,750 |
| C63 AMG, 6.2L 8-cyl[21] | 13 / 19 / 15 | $5,500 |
Other listed versions fall between these figures, for example the C350 4matic Coupe at 22 combined MPG[22].
Engine and size
EPA lists three engines for this model year. The 1.8L 4-cylinder is rated 201 hp[23]. The 3.5L 6-cylinder is rated 248 to 302 hp depending on version[24]. The 6.2L 8-cylinder is rated 510 hp[25].
Dimensions are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.

Among the C-Class model years in NHTSA's data, 2013 has the fourth highest complaint count at 565[3]. Only 2008 (829), 2009 (644) and 2012 (579) are higher[3]. The neighboring years are 579 complaints for 2012 and 271 for 2014[3].
The 2013 model year has 7 recalls, the same as 2012[3]. Some later years have more, with 14 for 2015, 16 for 2017 and 19 for 2018[3]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, so treat this as a rough comparison only.
Should you buy a used 2013 C-Class?
The data points to two things to check. One is air bags, which draw the most complaints and are involved in five of the seven recalls[2][11][13][14][15][17]. The other is the owner reports of rear subframe rust and broken door handles in the samples we read[5][6]. Before buying, confirm every recall is closed, and ask the dealer whether the 18V043 inflator replacement has been done on the car[14]. Our data does not cover reliability scores, repair costs or crash test ratings, so a pre-purchase inspection is a sensible step.
