2018 Nissan Titan: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 90 owner complaints on file for the 2018 Nissan Titan, and the engine group is named more often than any other[1][2]. The truck also has four recalls, and each one lists a remedy[3][4][5][6].
Reported problems
NHTSA lists 90 owner complaints for the 2018 Nissan Titan[1]. Three mention a crash, one mentions a fire and one mentions injuries. No deaths are reported[1].
The engine group is named more often than any other. One complaint can name several groups, so the counts overlap.
| Component group | Complaints | Median mileage at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Engine[2] | 45 | 5,944 |
| Power train[10] | 16 | 3,750 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[11] | 16 | not listed |
| Electrical system[12] | 15 | 47,000 |
These are unverified owner reports, and we read only a small sample of the texts. Here is what owners describe in that sample.
- Engine. Owners describe the truck hesitating or not answering the gas pedal for a few seconds when pulling out or merging. Some also describe a knocking noise from the engine[2].
- Power train. Owners describe the engine revving high before the truck picks up speed, and uneven shifting. Other reports mention the truck rolling while parked, four-wheel drive not working, and an engine failure[10].
- Electrical system. Owners describe power loss, stalling or limp mode. Others describe wiring harness trouble, or a screen, camera or emergency-call system that stopped working[12].
- Fuel/propulsion system. Owners describe a whistling noise and fuel pushing back out at the pump. Others describe slow response when merging, and fuel pump or engine failures that left the truck stopped[11].
Recalls
NHTSA lists four recalls for the 2018 Titan, newest first. Each one lists a remedy. None is marked as pending[3][4][5][6].
- Tire sidewall (21V169). Filed March 11, 2021[3]. It covers 36,141 vehicles, Titan and Altima together[3]. Some Continental tires may have spent too long in the curing step during production[3]. That can weaken the sidewall and cause sudden air loss or tread loss, which raises the risk of losing control[3]. Dealers inspect the tires and replace them as needed at no charge. Owner letters were mailed on May 11, 2021[3].
- Back-up camera (19V654). Filed September 12, 2019[4]. It covers 1,228,830 vehicles across many Nissan and Infiniti models, including the Titan[4]. The camera and display settings can be changed so the rear image no longer shows, and the truck keeps that setting the next time it goes in reverse[4]. That raises crash risk and fails the federal rear visibility rule[4]. Dealers update the camera settings software at no charge. The recall began November 11, 2019[4].
- Alternator harness (19V495). Filed June 26, 2019[5]. It covers 91,319 gasoline, light duty Titan trucks from 2017 to 2019[5]. The harness may have been damaged when the engine was installed, which can cause an electrical short[5]. The short can stall the engine and raises fire risk[5]. Dealers check the routing, then clip the harness in place or replace it, at no charge. The recall began August 8, 2019[5].
- Load label (18V240). Filed April 16, 2018[6]. It covers 483 vehicles, including 2016 to 2018 Titan trucks[6]. Accessories on these trucks lowered the load they can carry, but no label said so, so the truck could be overloaded[6]. That raises crash risk[6]. Nissan sends a new label with installation instructions at no charge. The recall began June 4, 2018[6].
Ask a dealer whether each recall was done on a specific truck. Owners can also call Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669[3].
Fuel economy
EPA rates all three listed versions with the 5.6L 8-cylinder engine, Automatic (S7) and regular gasoline[8][13][14].
Safety ratings
NHTSA's 5-Star entries for this truck show a rollover rating of 4 stars and a rollover risk of 19.8% in every rated configuration[15][9][16].
Engine and size
EPA lists the 5.6L 8-cylinder engine at 381 hp[19].
The sizes below are Canadian-market specifications from Transport Canada via NHTSA vPIC, converted to inches and pounds. They can differ slightly from US trucks.

The 2018 Titan has 90 complaints and four recalls[7]. That makes it the seventh highest of the 20 Titan model years listed for complaints[7]. Six years are higher: 2004 with 1,046, 2005 with 891, 2006 with 430, 2017 with 187, 2007 with 139 and 2008 with 133[7].
Every later year is lower than 2018: 2019 has 49, 2020 has 23, 2021 has 58, 2022 has 13, 2023 has 18 and 2024 has 15[7].
For recalls, 2018 has four. Five years have five: 2004, 2006, 2008, 2020 and 2021. The years 2005, 2019 and 2022 also have four. The rest have fewer[7]. The list has no row for 2016[7].
Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales. They are best used to compare Titan years with each other.
Should you buy a used 2018 Titan?
The 2018 Titan has 90 complaints on file, the seventh highest of the 20 Titan model years listed, with 187 for 2017 and 49 for 2019[7]. In the sample we read, owners describe slow or delayed response when accelerating, and some describe engine knocking[2][10]. All four recalls list a remedy, so ask a dealer to confirm each one was done on any truck you are considering[3][4][5][6]. Fuel economy is 18 MPG combined for 2WD and 4WD and 17 for PRO4X, and EPA puts yearly fuel cost at $3,700 to $3,950[8][13][14]. Complaints are unverified and not adjusted for sales, so treat them as a pattern to ask about, not a rate.
