2007 Pontiac G6: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 1,232 owner complaints on file for the 2007 Pontiac G6, and steering is the biggest group[1][2]. The car also has four recalls on file, so check which recall work has been done on any G6 you own or plan to buy[3].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 1,232 complaints with NHTSA for the 2007 G6[1]. Of those, 54 mention a crash, 24 a fire and 32 an injury, and 1 reports a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports. One complaint can name several parts, so the group counts below do not add up to the total.
| Component group | Complaints | Crashes | Fires | Injuries | Median miles at failure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steering[2] | 541 | 21 | 7 | 7 | 99,771 |
| Exterior lighting[5] | 232 | 2 | 7 | 1 | 77,000 |
| Brakes[6] | 207 | 8 | 1 | 3 | 75,000 |
| Electrical system[7] | 197 | 5 | 8 | 3 | 86,000 |
| Air bags[8] | 118 | 23 | 3 | 21 | 79,500 |
| Power train[9] | 98 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 89,499 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[10] | 82 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 88,300 |
| Speed control[11] | 76 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 77,500 |
Steering stands out. It has 541 complaints[2], more than twice the next group, exterior lighting at 232[5]. In the sample of steering complaints we read, owners describe knocking, clunking or clicking from the steering column when turning. Some describe the wheel getting stiff or locking up while driving.[2]
Brake lights come up in the lighting group. In the sample of exterior lighting complaints we read, owners describe brake lights that stay on when the pedal is not pressed or do not light when it is pressed[5]. A few electrical complaints describe the same brake light trouble, and recall 14V252 below covers a wiring fault with these symptoms[7][12].
In the brake complaints we read, owners describe pulsing or shaking when braking and blame warped rotors[6]. In the electrical sample, some owners describe an electrical fire or smoke in the engine compartment[7]. Electrical has the most fires of any group, 8, with exterior lighting and steering at 7 each[7][5][2].
Air bags have fewer complaints, 118, but the most injuries, 21, and 23 crashes[8].
Recalls
NHTSA lists four recalls for this model year[3]. Newest first:
- Power steering assist (15V064). Certain G6 built from April 18 to June 30, 2006[13], can suddenly lose electric power steering assist at any time while driving. Steering then takes more effort at low speeds, which raises crash risk. Dealers replace the torque sensor assembly free of charge. The recall began February 24, 2015[13].
- Brake apply sensor wiring (14V252). Extra resistance in a body control module connection can make voltage fluctuate in the brake apply sensor circuit. Brake lights can come on without the pedal or fail to come on with it. Cruise control may be hard to turn off, the shifter may move out of park without the brake pressed, and traction control, stability control and panic braking assist can be disabled. This recall covers G6 built May 26, 2004 to January 4, 2010[12]. Dealers secure the wiring harness to the module with a spacer, apply dielectric lubricant to the connectors and relearn the brake pedal position, free of charge. The recall began August 18, 2014[12].
- Shift cable (14V224). On G6 with 4-speed transmissions built May 26, 2004 to September 28, 2007[14], the shift cable can break. The gear the car is in may not match the gear selected, and the car may not actually be in park. It can move unexpectedly or roll away after the driver gets out. The fix is a new shift cable assembly and mounting bracket at a GM dealer, free of charge. At the time of the record, GM had not yet provided a notification schedule.[14]
- Passenger air bag sensor (07V146). In 359 vehicles potentially affected, the front passenger seat sensing system may not switch off the passenger air bag for a small child as required. That raises the risk of injury to a child in the seat during a crash. Dealers replace the sensing system free of charge, and the recall was to begin April 17, 2007[15].
Several of these recalls apply only to certain build dates or transmissions, so not every G6 is included[13][14].
Fuel economy
EPA lists six engine and transmission combinations for the G6[4][16][17][18][19][20]. All are front-wheel drive and use regular fuel. Figures are city / highway / combined miles per gallon.
| Engine and transmission | MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4L 4-cyl, Automatic 4-spd[4] | 20 / 30 / 24 | $2,800 |
| 3.5L 6-cyl, Automatic 4-spd[16] | 18 / 28 / 21 | $3,200 |
| 3.5L 6-cyl, Automatic (S4)[17] | 18 / 26 / 21 | $3,200 |
| 3.6L 6-cyl, Automatic (S6)[18] | 17 / 26 / 21 | $3,200 |
| 3.9L 6-cyl, Manual 6-spd[19] | 16 / 25 / 19 | $3,550 |
| 3.9L 6-cyl, Automatic (S4), GT/GTP Convertible[20] | 15 / 22 / 18 | $3,700 |
The 2.4L four-cylinder is the most economical at 24 mpg combined[4]. The 3.9L convertible is the thirstiest at 18 mpg combined[20]. The annual costs use EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA lists its 5-Star Safety Ratings for the 2007 G6 as not rated for the 4 DR FWD, 2 DR FWD and C FWD listings[21][22][23]. That means there are no star ratings to compare.
Engine and size
The EPA listings above show 2.4L, 3.5L, 3.6L and 3.9L engines[4][16][18][19].
Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications from Transport Canada, so they can differ slightly from US models. Every variant listed has the same outside size: 189 inches long, 70 inches wide, 57 inches tall, with a 112 inch wheelbase[24][25][26][27][28]. Curb weight differs by variant.
How 2007 compares with other years
Show the numbers
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2005 | 679 | 5 |
| 2006 | 1,910 | 6 |
| 2007 | 1,232 | 4 |
| 2008 | 1,080 | 4 |
| 2009 | 713 | 4 |
| 2010 | 272 | 2 |
NHTSA's counts for each G6 model year, complaints and recalls[3]:
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2005 | 679 | 5 |
| 2006 | 1,910 | 6 |
| 2007 | 1,232 | 4 |
| 2008 | 1,080 | 4 |
| 2009 | 713 | 4 |
| 2010 | 272 | 2 |
The 2007 model year has the second most complaints of the six years, behind 2006. On recalls, 2007 has fewer than 2005 and 2006 and the same number as 2008 and 2009. Only 2010 has fewer. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so use them as a rough guide only.
Should you buy a used 2007 G6?
The record shows a car with more steering complaints than any other group and several recalls tied to safety systems[2][3]. Ask for proof that the recalls that apply to the car were done, especially the shift cable and brake apply sensor work, and run the VIN yourself[12][14]. Have a mechanic look at the steering column for noise or stiffness and test the brake lights. Choose the engine with fuel cost in mind, since EPA's annual estimate runs from $2,800 to $3,700 depending on the version[4][20]. NHTSA has not rated this model year, so the safety record rests on complaints and recalls[21][22][23].
