2022 Porsche Taycan: problems, recalls and efficiency
The 2022 Porsche Taycan has 80 owner complaints on file with NHTSA and 12 recalls, including several for a battery short circuit that can raise fire risk[1][2][3][4]. Check the recall status of any car you are considering before you buy.
Reported problems
NHTSA has 80 owner complaints on file for the 2022 Taycan[1]. Two mention a crash, two mention a fire and one mentions injuries. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several components[1][5]. Counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold.
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Electrical System[5] | 37 |
| Power Train[6] | 19 |
| Unknown or other[7] | 13 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[8] | 9 |
| Engine[9] | 9 |
| Visibility/wiper[10] | 7 |
| Brakes[11] | 5 |
| Back over prevention[12] | 4 |
In the complaint texts we read, owners describe a few repeating stories.
- Electrical System. Owners describe a heater and defroster that stop working, which they worry could leave the windshield fogged. Others describe a sudden shutdown or loss of power with an electrical error message, and a center screen that goes dark while driving[5].
- Power Train. Owners describe the car moving itself out of drive and into neutral or park, usually when stopped or moving slowly. Some say the dealer could not reproduce it[6].
- Fuel/propulsion system. Owners describe a sudden loss of power while driving, often with a turtle icon on the display, sometimes in traffic[8].
- Engine. The stories overlap with the two groups above: shifting by itself and a loss of power with a control error message[9].
Because this is a small sample of texts, it shows what owners report, not how often it happens.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 12 recalls for this model year[2]. Here they are, newest first. Several also cover other years or other Porsche models[13][3].
- Rearview camera (25V896). Dec. 19, 2025[13]. The rearview image may not show in reverse, which cuts the driver's view and raises crash risk. Dealers update the driver assistance software at no cost to the owner[13]. Owner letters went out February 13, 2026[13].
- Passenger air bag sensor (25V221). May 5, 2025[14]. A sensing error may switch off the front passenger air bag, so it would not deploy in a crash. A dealer swaps the front passenger seat cushion at no cost to the owner[14].
- Battery short circuit (24V732). Oct. 1, 2024[4]. A short circuit inside a high-voltage battery module can raise fire risk. The final remedy is diagnostic software, which the notice expected in the first quarter of 2025[4]. Owners may be told to charge only to 80% until the battery is dealt with[4]. Without online data, dealers run a test and replace the battery module assembly if needed[4]. The notice does not confirm the final remedy is available, so ask a dealer. It replaces 23V840, 24V215 and 24V217[4].
- Battery short circuit (24V731). Oct. 1, 2024[3]. Same short circuit and fire risk. Owners are told to charge up to 80% until the repair is done[3]. Dealers replace the affected modules at no cost[3]. Cars repaired under earlier recalls need the new repair too[3].
- Front brake hoses (24V455). June 19, 2024[15]. The hoses can crack and leak brake fluid, which can lengthen stopping distance and raise crash risk. Dealers replace them at no cost[15].
- Battery short circuit (24V217). March 20, 2024[16]. Same short circuit and fire risk, and the same 80% charging limit until repair[16]. Dealers check battery data and replace modules as needed, at no cost[16].
- Battery short circuit (24V215). March 20, 2024[17]. Same problem and same 80% advice[17]. Dealers replace the affected modules at no cost[17].
- Battery short circuit (23V840). Dec. 13, 2023[18]. Same problem. Dealers inspect the battery and replace modules as needed, at no cost[18].
- Portable charging cable (23V841). Dec. 13, 2023[19]. On the higher-voltage plug setting, some home outlets cannot handle the current needed by the compact charger[19].[19]. The outlet or cable can overheat, which raises fire risk. Owners are told to use the 110V home cable or public charging instead[19]. Dealers supply a new cable with a temperature sensor at no cost[19]. A second letter follows when parts are ready[19].
- Brake pad warning (23V347). May 16, 2023[20]. The worn brake pad warning shows the wrong color, so a driver could keep driving on worn pads. Dealers update the software in the instrument cluster at no cost[20].
- Seat belt warning (23V176). March 17, 2023[21]. With an unbuckled passenger, the warning light and chime do not activate as intended. Dealers update the software at no cost[21].
- Rearview camera and screen (22V404). June 8, 2022[22]. A software error can leave the center screen black after the car starts, and the rear top view can flicker. Dealers install new software at no cost[22].
Efficiency and range
EPA rates the 2022 Taycan in MPGe, the electric version of miles per gallon. Combined ratings run from 70 MPGe for the Turbo S to 83 MPGe for the GTS[23][24]. Rated range runs from 199 miles for the 4S Perf Battery to 246 miles for the GTS[25][24].
Safety ratings
NHTSA lists the 2022 Taycan versions we checked as not rated in its 5-Star Safety Ratings[27][28][29][30][31]. That means no star score is on file. It does not mean the car scored poorly.
Power and size
EPA lists power from 321 to 693 hp depending on version[32]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications[33].[33].
| Variant | Length | Width | Height | Wheelbase | Curb weight |

How 2022 compares with other years
Show the numbers
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 92 | 16 |
| 2021 | 72 | 22 |
| 2022 | 80 | 12 |
| 2023 | 21 | 11 |
| 2024 | 9 | 6 |
| 2025 | 2 | 4 |
Complaints on file by model year are 92 for 2020, 72 for 2021, 80 for 2022, 21 for 2023, 9 for 2024 and 2 for 2025[2]. So 2022 has the second highest complaint count of the years listed, behind 2020. For recalls, 2021 has 22, 2020 has 16, 2022 has 12 and 2023 has 11[2]. That puts 2022 third for recalls. Newer years have fewer of both. The counts are not adjusted for sales.
Should you buy a used 2022 Taycan?
The 2022 Taycan has a long recall history, and five of its 12 recalls are about a battery short circuit with fire risk[3][4][16][17][18][2]. Owner complaints also describe sudden power loss and the car shifting by itself[6][8]. If you are shopping for one, ask a dealer to run the VIN and show which recall repairs are done, starting with the battery ones. For recalls where the notice said the final remedy was still coming, ask for the current status[4][19]. A fair reading is that this car can suit a careful buyer who confirms the recall work first.
