2015 Ram 1500: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 1,459 owner complaints for the 2015 Ram 1500, and engine and steering are the biggest groups[1][2][3]. The model year also has 17 recalls, so check the VIN before you buy[4].
Most reported problems
NHTSA complaints are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several parts. The counts below are also not adjusted for how many trucks were sold[1].
| Component group | Complaints | Median mileage at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Engine[2] | 393 | 75,000 |
| Steering[3] | 342 | 76,380 |
| Power train[7] | 226 | 50,000 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[8] | 166 | 56,500 |
| Electrical system[9] | 159 | 45,900 |
| Brakes[10] | 159 | 50,850 |
The engine group also has the most fire mentions of the groups we looked at, 42 of them[2]. Across all complaints, 58 mention a fire and 4 mention a death[1].
In a small sample of complaint texts we read for the engine, steering, power train and fuel groups, owners describe the patterns below. They are not counts of all owners.
- Engine. Owners describe stalling, a no-start or a loss of power, and some describe exhaust fumes in the cabin[2].
- Steering. Owners describe the steering wheel seizing or locking up, and some describe vibration[3].
- Power train. Owners describe shaking or vibration at speed[7].
- Fuel/propulsion. Owners describe the truck shutting off or losing power while driving[8].
These samples are too small to say how common any problem is.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 17 recalls for the 2015 model year[4]. Newest first[4]:
- 3.0L diesel sensor software (23V411). Certain 2014-2019 trucks with the 3.0L diesel. A sensor part can break down and the engine may stall, which raises crash risk. Dealers update the engine computer software, free of charge.[11]
- Diesel fuel pump (22V406). Certain 3.0L diesel trucks. A failing fuel pump can spread debris and starve the engine of fuel, with a sudden loss of drive power. Dealers replace the pump and check other fuel parts.[12]
- Side curtain air bag inflator (21V632). Certain trucks. The inflator end cap can come off or the inflator can burst, which raises injury risk. Dealers inspect and replace the assemblies as needed.[13]
- Diesel sensor wheel (20V475). Certain 2014-2018 diesel trucks. Same stall risk as 23V411. Dealers load software that lets the engine use the camshaft signal if the crankshaft signal drops out.[14]
- EGR cooler (19V757). Certain 3.0L EcoDiesel trucks. The cooler can crack and let hot coolant vapor into the EGR system, where it may burn in the intake manifold and raise fire risk. Dealers replace the cooler and check the intake manifold.[15]
- Tailgate latch, 8 foot bed (19V347). Trucks with an 8 foot bed and a power locking tailgate. A latch tab can break and the tailgate can open while driving, dropping cargo on the road. Dealers repair the latch.[16]
- Tailgate latch, shorter beds (18V486). Trucks with a power locking tailgate and a 5 foot 7 inch or 6 foot 4 inch bed. Same latch tab problem. Dealers repair the truck.[17]
- Cruise control may not switch off (18V332). A wiring short can keep cruise control on even if the driver brakes. The truck could hold speed or speed up. Dealers flash new software. The recall notice tells owners to avoid cruise control until the software update is done.[18]
- Fire extinguisher (17V824). Certain Kidde extinguishers can clog or lose a nozzle, so they may fail in a fire. Owners contact Kidde for a replacement.[19]
- Column shifter interlock (17V821). Trucks with a column shifter. A pin can stick so the truck shifts out of park without the brake or key, and could roll away. Dealers update software and replace the part if needed.[20]
- Rollover air bag sensor (17V302). Certain 2013-2016 trucks. A sensor fault can disable the rollover side curtain air bags and belt pretensioners. Dealers update the controller software.[21]
- Power steering board (16V167). Only 440 trucks built January 22, 2015, to September 13, 2015. A contaminated circuit board can short and remove steering assist, so steering takes more effort. Dealers replace the steering unit.[22]
- Rear axle shaft (15V661). Certain trucks built June 17, 2015, to September 28, 2015. Rear axles may have been heat treated wrongly and could break, so a wheel could separate. Dealers inspect and replace axle assemblies as needed.[23]
- Quad Cab side curtains (15V534). Certain 2014-2015 Quad Cab trucks. The curtains may not cover the rear pillars fully, which raises injury risk for rear passengers. Dealers check them, add a foil patch and replace if needed.[24]
- Diesel battery cable (15V517). Only diesel 4x2 trucks built August 8, 2013, to July 2, 2015. A cable can rub on an engine mount bracket and short, so the truck may stall and there is more fire risk. Dealers check the routing and replace worn cables.[25]
- Radio software security (15V461). Certain radios have software holes that could let outsiders reach vehicle systems remotely. Owners get a USB update, or can visit a dealer.[26]
- Side impact sensors (15V460). Certain 2013-2015 trucks. Overly sensitive sensors may set off air bags and belt pretensioners without a crash. Dealers update the module calibration.[27]
Fuel economy
EPA lists many versions of the 2015 Ram 1500[28]. Annual fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the truck was new[28].
| Engine and drive | City / Highway / Combined MPG | EPA annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 3.6L 6-cyl, 8-spd, 2WD[29] | 17 / 25 / 20 | $3,350 |
| 3.6L 6-cyl, 8-spd, 4WD[30] | 16 / 23 / 19 | $3,550 |
| 3.6L 6-cyl, 8-spd, HFE 2WD[31] | 18 / 25 / 21 | $3,200 |
| 3.0L 6-cyl turbo diesel, 8-spd, 2WD[32] | 20 / 27 / 23 | $4,150 |
| 3.0L 6-cyl turbo diesel, 8-spd, 4WD[33] | 19 / 26 / 22 | $4,350 |
| 3.0L 6-cyl turbo diesel, 8-spd, HFE 2WD[5] | 21 / 29 / 24 | $4,000 |
| 5.7L 8-cyl, 8-spd, 2WD[34] | 15 / 22 / 17 | $4,450 |
| 5.7L 8-cyl, 8-spd, 4WD[35] | 15 / 21 / 17 | $4,450 |
| 5.7L 8-cyl, 6-spd, 2WD[28] | 14 / 20 / 16 | $4,750 |
| 5.7L 8-cyl, 6-spd, 4WD[36] | 13 / 19 / 15 | $5,050 |
The diesel is rated 22 to 24 MPG combined, and the 5.7L 8-cyl is rated 15 to 17[32][33][5][28][34][36][35]. The diesel costs more to fuel per year than the 3.6L in EPA's estimate[32][29].
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 2015 Ram 1500 4 stars overall, 4 stars for frontal crashes and 5 stars for side crashes[6].
Rollover differs by drive. The 2WD versions get 4 stars with a 19.8% rollover risk[6]. The 4WD versions get 3 stars with a 21.9% rollover risk[37].

Should you buy a used 2015 Ram 1500?
The data shows a truck with many recalls and a large complaint file, led by engine and steering reports[4][1][2][3]. Run the VIN through NHTSA to see which of the 17 recalls apply, because several only cover certain build dates, engines or bed types[22][23][25][16][17]. Pay extra attention to the 3.0L diesel, which has several recalls on file[11][12][14][15]. The 4-star overall NHTSA rating is a positive[6], and fuel economy depends heavily on the engine, from 15 to 24 MPG combined[36][5]. Our facts do not cover reliability scores, towing or oil capacity.
