2008 Subaru Impreza/Outback Sport: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2008 Subaru Impreza/Outback Sport has a busy record, with 213 owner complaints on file with NHTSA[1] and 14 recalls[2]. Check that a specific car's recall work was done before you decide.
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 213 owner complaints on file for the 2008 Subaru Impreza/Outback Sport[1]. Ten mention a crash[1], 4 a fire[1] and 9 injuries[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several parts.
Here is how the complaints split by component group:
| Component group | Complaints | Median mileage at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Power train[4] | 70 | 62,000 |
| Air bags[5] | 44 | 3,000 |
| Engine[6] | 42 | 31,000 |
| Structure[7] | 31 | 62,000 |
| Brakes[8] | 26 | 63,500 |
| Visibility[9] | 24 | 11,000 |
| Unknown or other[10] | 9 | 112,000 |
| Electrical[11] | 9 | 51,000 |
We read a small sample of complaint texts in four groups. This is what owners describe.
- Power train. In the sample, owners describe a clutch pedal that creaks, clicks, flexes or feels loose[4]. Several of them blame broken welds where the pedal assembly is mounted. A few other texts describe clutch slipping or a seized bearing.
- Air bags. In the sample texts, owners say the passenger air bag light or sensor shows "off" or flickers when a lighter adult sits in the seat[5]. This group has the most crashes (6) and injuries (6) of any group[5][4][6][7][8][9][10][11].
- Structure. In the sample texts, owners describe broken or cracked welds on the clutch and brake pedal bracket at the firewall[7]. One structure complaint mentions a fire[7].
- Engine. In the sample texts, owners describe piston or ringland failure, some at low mileage[6].
Electrical complaints are few at 9, but 4 of them mention a fire[11]. We did not read complaint texts for brakes, visibility or electrical, so we say nothing about their themes.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 14 recalls for this model year[2]. Each recall below lists a remedy. Unit counts cover every model and year named in the recall, not only this one. The facts do not say whether any single car already had the work done, so check a specific car's VIN with Subaru or NHTSA.
- Passenger air bag inflator, Zone C (20V003). Filed January 2020. Some passenger front air bag inflators that were replaced in an earlier recall may rupture and throw metal fragments, which can seriously injure or kill. Dealers replace the inflator. It covers cars sold or registered in a list of states, and 111,562 units are potentially affected[12].
- Passenger air bag inflator, Zone B (20V002). Same problem and same January 2020 filing, for a different list of states. 127,547 units are potentially affected[13]. Dealers replace the inflator[13].
- Passenger air bag inflator, Zone A (20V001). Same problem and filing date, for another list of states and territories. 258,813 units are potentially affected[14]. Dealers replace the inflator with an alternate one[14].
- Ignition switch (19V297). Filed April 2019. A replacement mechanical key ignition switch can weaken, so a heavy key ring and road conditions can move it to accessory and shut the engine off. The air bag may then not deploy in a crash. Dealers inspect the switch and replace it if needed. 511 units are potentially affected[15].
- Brake light switch (19V149). Filed February 2019. Contamination can stop the brake lights from coming on. Other drivers then get no warning that you are slowing down. Dealers replace the switch. 1,303,530 units are potentially affected[16].
- Passenger air bag inflator (17V026). Filed January 2017, for one group of states. Possible inflator rupture with metal fragments. Dealers replace the inflator. 69,529 units are potentially affected[17].
- Passenger air bag inflator (17V016). Filed January 2017, for another group of states. Same risk and same fix. 62,764 units are potentially affected[18].
- Passenger air bag inflator (17V014). Filed January 2017, for a third list of states and territories. Same risk and same fix. 53,480 units are potentially affected[19].
- Air injection pump relay (16V738). Filed October 2016, for turbo-charged engines. The relay can fail and keep the pump running until it overheats, which raises fire risk. Dealers replace the relay. 100,127 units are potentially affected[20].
- Passenger air bag inflator (16V359). Filed May 2016. Possible inflator rupture. Dealers replace the inflator. 146,010 units are potentially affected[21].
- Passenger air bag inflator (16V358). Filed May 2016. Same risk and same fix, for another group of states. 302,127 units are potentially affected[22].
- Brake line corrosion, repeat remedy (14V830). Filed December 2014. Cars registered in a list of salt belt states that had the earlier brake line repair (14V311) before December 23, 2014[23] are covered again because Subaru found that repair inadequate. Corroded brake lines can leak fluid and lengthen stopping distance. Dealers apply anti-corrosion wax to the brake line joint area. 200,064 units are potentially affected[23].
- Brake line corrosion (14V311). Filed June 2014. Salt water can splash on the brake lines and corrode them. Dealers test for leaks, rustproof the lines, and replace lines if fluid is seeping. 461,338 units are potentially affected[24].
- Engine oil supply pipe (08V460). Filed September 2008. A pipe may have been assembled wrongly, which can crack it over time and let oil leak onto hot parts and cause an engine compartment fire. Dealers inspect the pipe, add a bracket and replace the pipe assembly. 16,715 units are potentially affected[25].
Fuel economy
EPA lists several versions of this car. The 2.5L 4-cylinder on regular fuel is rated 20 city, 27 highway and 22 combined MPG with the Automatic (S4)[26] and with the 5-speed manual[3]. The EPA estimate for annual fuel cost on those versions is $3,050[26].
The turbo versions need premium fuel and cost more to run. The 2.5L turbo with the Automatic (S4) gets 20 city, 25 highway and 22 combined MPG, at $3,750 a year[27]. With the 5-speed manual it gets 19 city, 25 highway and 21 combined MPG, at $3,900 a year[28]. The thirstiest listing is the turbo with the 6-speed manual at 17 city, 23 highway and 19 combined MPG, at $4,350 a year[29].
The Wagon/Outback SPT listings with the same engines and transmissions match the Impreza AWD numbers[30][31][32][33]. The 6-speed manual turbo is listed only under Wagon/Outback SPT[29]. EPA's annual cost uses today's fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 4-door model a rollover rating of 4 stars, with a rollover risk of 10.3%[34]. The 4-door wagon has the same rating and risk[35]. Our data has no other star ratings for this model year.

NHTSA's counts for each Impreza/Outback Sport model year from 1995 to 2017 put 2008 high on complaints. Only 2002 (292), 2013 (251) and 2012 (243) have more than the 213 on file for 2008[2]. The next highest after 2008 are 2017 with 125 and 2009 with 119[2].
Recalls follow a different pattern. 2008 has 14[2], the same as 2009 and 2011. 2010 has 15[2]. Years from 2012 to 2016 have fewer recalls, from 6 in 2012 down to 1 in 2016, and 2017 has 7[2].
These counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so treat them as a rough guide only.
Should you buy a used 2008 Impreza?
This model year has a busy record, with 213 complaints and 14 recalls[2]. The recalls all list remedies, so the first step is to confirm that a specific car has had them done, especially the passenger air bag inflator and brake line recalls[14][24]. The complaint samples we read point to a few things worth checking on a test drive and inspection, such as the clutch pedal feel and noise on manual cars, the passenger air bag status light, and any sign of engine trouble[4][5][6]. A fair reading is that the car can make sense if it passes those checks and the service records look good, and the history should shape your price and your inspection.
