2025 Tesla Model X: problems, recalls and range
NHTSA has 16 owner complaints on file for the 2025 Tesla Model X[1]. Three recalls apply, and each one has a repair described[2][3][4].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 16 complaints with NHTSA[1]. Two mention a crash, one mentions an injury, and none mention a fire or a death[1]. These are unverified reports, and one complaint can name more than one part of the car.
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Unknown or other[6] | 6 |
| Forward collision avoidance[7] | 4 |
| Electrical system[8] | 3 |
| Brakes[9] | 2 |
| Steering[10] | 2 |
| Seat belts[11] | 2 |
| Visibility/wiper[12] | 1 |
| Air bags[13] | 1 |
The counts are small, so none of these groups is a proven pattern. In the sample of complaint texts we read, owners describe a few things:
- Driver assistance. Owners describe the car slowing hard, leaving a programmed route, or not matching the speed mode they picked. Some of these reports sit under forward collision avoidance[7], electrical system[8] and steering[10].
- Braking. Owners describe a strong one-pedal braking feel on slippery roads and a sudden stop with no obstacle ahead[9].
- Turn signal. One owner describes a turn signal button that sometimes does not respond[10].
These are owner accounts. NHTSA has not confirmed them.
Recalls
Three recalls are on file, newest first. Each lists a remedy that owners can use.
- Air bag horn pad (25V172). Filed March 19, 2025[2]. An air bag may have the wrong horn pad, so the horn might not sound. That could stop the driver from warning others and raise crash risk. It covers 91 vehicles[2]. Tesla service inspects the car and fits the right part if needed, at no charge[2].
- Rearview camera (25V002). Filed January 6, 2025[3]. A circuit board can short and the rearview image can be lost. That limits the driver's view behind the car and raises crash risk. It covers 239,382 vehicles across several Tesla models[3]. Tesla sent a software update and will replace computers that failed or show signs of stress, at no charge[3].
- Driver air bag (24V967). Filed December 23, 2024[4]. The driver's air bag could tear when it deploys, which may leave an occupant less protected and raise injury risk. It covers 487 vehicles[4]. Tesla service replaces the air bag assembly at no charge[4].
Owners can contact Tesla customer service about these recalls[2][3][4].
Fuel economy
The 2025 Model X is electric, so EPA rates it in MPGe. EPA lists three versions.
| Version | Combined | City | Highway | Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Model X[14] | 98 MPGe | 103 | 94 | 329 miles |
| Model X Plaid (20in wheels)[15] | 94 MPGe | 98 | 89 | 314 miles |
| Model X Plaid (22in wheels)[16] | 88 MPGe | 92 | 84 | 294 miles |
The Plaid with the larger wheels has the lowest range and the lowest rating of the three[16].
Engine and size
The EPA test car list shows the 2025 Model X with an electric motor rated at 658 hp[17]. All three EPA versions are all-wheel drive[15][16][14].
These dimensions are Canadian-market specifications, so a US car can differ slightly[18].
How 2025 compares with other years
Show the numbers
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | 450 | 12 |
| 2017 | 268 | 10 |
| 2018 | 193 | 9 |
| 2019 | 102 | 8 |
| 2020 | 128 | 10 |
| 2021 | 41 | 24 |
| 2022 | 128 | 22 |
| 2023 | 194 | 17 |
| 2024 | 27 | 8 |
| 2025 | 16 | 3 |
| 2026 | 7 | 0 |
NHTSA counts 16 complaints and 3 recalls for the 2025 Model X[5]. Only the 2026 model year is lower on both counts, with 7 complaints and no recalls[5]. The 2024 model year has 27 complaints and 8 recalls[5]. The 2023 model year has 194 complaints and 17 recalls[5].
Older years sit much higher. The 2016 model year has the most complaints at 450, and 2021 has the most recalls at 24[5]. Counts are not adjusted for sales, so treat them as a rough guide.
Should you buy a used 2025 Model X?
The 2025 Model X has a short complaint list and few recalls compared with most other Model X years[5]. The three recalls each have a repair described, so ask for proof they were done[2][3][4]. Some complaint texts describe driver-assistance behavior that owners found unsettling, so test those features yourself and read how they work before you rely on them[7][8]. Complaints are unverified and the counts are small, so they do not predict how any one car will behave[1]. Our data does not cover towing, tires or battery warranty, so check those separately.
