2024 Toyota Tundra: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2024 Toyota Tundra has 350 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, and half of them name the engine group[1][2]. It also has 10 recalls, including two for engine bearing damage from manufacturing debris[3][4][5].
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 350 owner complaints on file for the 2024 Tundra[1]. Two mention a crash[1]. Three mention a fire[1]. None report an injury or a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name several parts.
Here is where the complaints land by component group:
- Engine: 175 complaints, with a median of 21,000 miles at failure[2].
- Power train: 86 complaints, with a median of 4,300 miles[8].
- Fuel/propulsion system: 46 complaints[9].
- Electrical system: 38 complaints, 2 of them mentioning a fire[10].
- Exterior lighting: 34 complaints[11].
- Speed control: 32 complaints[12].
- Brakes: 26 complaints[13].
We also read a small sample of complaint texts in the biggest groups. In the engine sample, owners describe the truck hesitating or ignoring the gas pedal when pulling out from a stop, oil leaks or low oil warnings, reduced power messages, and one failure where debris and a bearing were blamed[2]. In the power train sample, owners describe a delay between pressing the pedal and the truck moving, sometimes at intersections[8]. The fuel sample centers on a gauge that jumps back to full when the tank is not full, and owners say it leaves them unsure how much fuel is left[9]. The electrical sample includes the same gauge problem, backup camera guidelines that stop showing, and a second key fob that was slow to arrive[10].
Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many trucks were sold. A sample of texts also cannot tell us how often a problem happens across all owners.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 10 recalls for the 2024 Tundra, newest first[3]. Each notice lists the repair as free of charge[4][14][15][5][16][17][18][19][20][21]. Your own truck may or may not be covered, so ask a dealer to check the VIN against these numbers.
- Remedy pending
Engine bearing (26V320). Covers 43,566 potentially affected trucks with a V35A engine[4]. Debris left from manufacturing can damage a main bearing, which can stall the engine and cut drive power. That raises the risk of a crash[4]. The planned repair is an inspection of the #1 main bearing with software and drive data, then an engine replacement if needed[4]. The final remedy is not yet available, and interim letters were mailed July 23, 2026[4]. This notice builds on earlier recalls 24V381 and 25V767[4]. - Load label (26V179). Covers 8,230 potentially affected vehicles[14]. The label for added weight can show wrong values, so a truck could be overloaded and crash more easily. Dealers replace the label, and letters were mailed May 26, 2026[14].
- Rearview camera, parking assist (26V038). Covers 161,268 potentially affected trucks with a Panoramic View Monitor[15]. The camera image may not appear in reverse, which cuts the driver's view behind the truck. Dealers update the parking assist software, and letters were mailed March 23, 2026[15].
- Engine bearing (25V767). Covers 126,691 potentially affected vehicles with a V35A engine[5]. The risk is the same as above: debris, bearing failure, stall and lost drive power. The repair is the same bearing inspection and an engine replacement if needed. Letters were mailed August 28, 2026[5].
- Rearview camera, display software (25V657). Covers 393,838 potentially affected vehicles[16]. A software error can keep the rear image from showing in reverse. Dealers update the multimedia display software, and letters were mailed November 19, 2025[16].
- Reverse lights (25V322). Covers 443,444 potentially affected vehicles[17]. Moisture can get into the reverse light assemblies and make them fail, so others may not see that the truck is backing up. Dealers replace both assemblies and repair wiring if needed. This is a phased recall, and letters were mailed May 23, 2026[17].
- Tires (24V767). Covers 11,890 potentially affected vehicles[18]. The passenger-side front and rear tires may have damage on the inner sidewall, which can cause a sudden loss of air pressure and control. Dealers inspect the tires and replace them as needed, and letters were mailed December 5, 2024[18].
- Load label, dealer accessories (24V548). Covers 33,848 potentially affected vehicles fitted with accessories from Gulf States Toyota[19]. The weight label can show wrong values. The distributor mails new labels, and letters were mailed September 16, 2024[19].
- Transmission (24V125). Covers 280,663 potentially affected vehicles[20]. The truck can move unexpectedly when in neutral with the brakes off. Dealers update the transmission control software, and letters were mailed April 8, 2024[20].
- Load label, regional distributor (23V757). Covers 534 potentially affected vehicles[21]. The label shows the wrong load capacity, which can lead to overloading. The distributor mails a corrected label, and letters were mailed December 18, 2023[21].
Fuel economy
EPA lists several versions of the 2024 Tundra, all with a 3.4L 6-cylinder turbo engine and an automatic (S10)[22][23]. On regular fuel, combined ratings run from 19 to 22 MPG[6][23]. Annual fuel cost on regular runs from $3,050 to $3,550[6][23]. EPA bases cost on its current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the truck was new.
| Version (miles per gallon: city / highway / combined) | MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 2WD[22] | 18 / 23 / 20 | $3,350 |
| 2WD, another listing[6] | 20 / 24 / 22 | $3,050 |
| 4WD[23] | 17 / 23 / 19 | $3,550 |

| 4WD PRO[26] | 18 / 20 / 19 | $3,550 |
EPA also lists premium fuel versions, with annual costs from $3,750 to $4,350[27][28].
Safety ratings
NHTSA's rated body styles for the Tundra show frontal and side crash results of 5 stars on the PU/CC 2WD body style[29]. The PU/CC 4WD earns 5 stars overall, 5 for frontal, 5 for side and 4 for rollover[7]. The PU/EC 4WD shows 4 stars for rollover[30]. The PU/EC 2WD is not rated[31]. Rollover risk is listed at 18.5% for each body style[31][29][7]. The Tundra Hybrid listing repeats the PU/CC results[32][33].
Engine and size
EPA lists the 2024 Tundra's 3.4L 6-cylinder engine at 358 to 389 hp, depending on version[34]. The sizes below are Canadian-market specifications from NHTSA's vehicle database, and US trucks can differ slightly. Width is 80 inches in every listing[35][36][37][38][39][40].

Every year from 2000 through 2007 also has more than 350 complaints[3]. The 2008 year has 327[3]. Newer years show fewer, with 142 complaints for 2025 and 34 for 2026[3]. These are counts, not rates, so they do not account for sales.
Should you buy a used 2024 Tundra?
The 2024 Tundra has fewer complaints than 2022 and 2023 but more than 2025 and 2026[3]. The two engine bearing recalls are the biggest item to settle, and the final remedy for 26V320 is not yet available[4][5]. Ask a dealer to check the VIN for open recalls before you buy. On a test drive, pay attention to throttle response and the fuel gauge, since owners in our sample describe both[2][9]. Fuel economy is 19 to 22 combined MPG on regular in the EPA listings[6][23].
