The car also has 6 recalls on file[4], so check each one before you buy or keep it.. The car also has 6 recalls on file[4], so check each one before you buy or keep it.
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 65 owner complaints on file for the 2012 Beetle[1]. Four mention a crash, 3 mention injuries, and none mention a fire or a death[1]. These are unverified reports, and one complaint can name several parts of the car.
The largest component groups are:
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Visibility[2] | 13 |
| Electrical system[7] | 12 |
| Air bags[8] | 12 |
| Visibility/wiper[3] | 10 |
| Steering[9] | 7 |
| Engine[10] | 6 |
Windows and glass. In the sample of visibility complaints we read, owners describe a driver window that will not close properly or lets rain in[2]. Some of these texts repeat, so they do not all come from different owners. In the visibility/wiper sample, owners describe windshields that cracked with no impact they could point to, and driver windows that would not close or moved on their own[3].
Electrical. In the electrical sample, owners describe power windows that stop, reverse or need several tries to close. A few describe a key that sticks in the ignition[7]. The median mileage at failure for electrical complaints is 809 miles[7].
Air bags. Air bag complaints carry 2 crashes and 2 injuries[8]. In the sample we read, owners describe getting the inflator recall notice but being told the replacement part was not yet available. A smaller number describe air bags that did not deploy in a rear end crash[8].
Steering has 7 complaints with 1 crash and 1 injury[9]. Engine has 6 complaints and no crashes or injuries[10]. These counts are small, so we do not call either a common problem.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 6 recalls for this car[4]. Newest first[4]:
- Remedy pending
Air bag inflator (20V785), December 16, 2020[11]. The driver air bag inflator can burst after long exposure to humidity and heat, and metal fragments could hurt the driver or others. It covers 105,652 vehicles across the 2012 to 2014 Beetle and Beetle Convertible[11]. Volkswagen will replace the driver front air bag free of charge[11]. Some owners in our complaint sample say the part was not yet available when they were notified[8]. Ask a dealer about parts before you count on a quick fix. - Regulatory compliance (19V679), September 25, 2019[12]. Changes made during an internal evaluation period may mean certain vehicles do not meet all regulatory requirements, which raises the risk of a crash, fire or injury. It covers 113 vehicles across several Volkswagen models, including some Beetles[12]. Volkswagen will buy the affected vehicles back[12].
- Key removal outside Park (19V615), August 22, 2019[13]. Silicate build-up on the shift lever switch can let the key come out when the shifter is not in Park. The car could roll away. It covers 679,027 vehicles with an automatic transmission, a manual handbrake and keyless entry[13]. Dealers will install an extra switch and circuit board free of charge[13].
- Rear trailing arm (14V656), October 20, 2014[14]. In cars whose rear trailing arms were already bent, for example in a rear or side-rear crash, an arm could snap and cause a loss of control. It covers 442,066 vehicles including 2012 and 2013 Beetles built from March 1, 2011 to July 31, 2013[14]. Dealers will fit a sheet metal inlay on the trailing arms free of charge[14].
- Child seat detection (12V540), November 15, 2012[15]. In 2,471 Beetles built February through August 2012 with leather sport seats[15], a wet passenger seat may stop the control module from detecting a child seat. The passenger air bag would then stay on, which raises injury risk for a child. Volkswagen will replace the control modules free of charge[15].
- Summer tires (12V331), July 16, 2012[16]. A factory error left 83 cars with summer tires that may not meet federal standards[16]. Owners may not know the tires are summer tires, which grip differently. Volkswagen will replace the tires free of charge[16].
Ask a dealer to confirm each recall repair was done. Several of these recalls cover other models and years too.
Fuel economy
The EPA lists four versions of the 2012 Beetle. All are front-wheel drive.
| Engine and transmission | City / highway / combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl turbo, Automatic (S6), Premium[5] | 22 / 30 / 25 | $3,300 |
| 2.0L 4-cyl turbo, Manual 6-spd, Premium[17] | 21 / 30 / 24 | $3,400 |
| 2.5L 5-cyl, Automatic (S6), Regular[18] | 22 / 29 / 25 | $2,700 |
| 2.5L 5-cyl, Manual 5-spd, Regular[19] | 22 / 31 / 25 | $2,700 |
The EPA fuel cost uses its current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new. Combined MPG is 24 or 25 for all four[5][18][17][19].
