2012 Volkswagen Golf/GTI: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 89 owner complaints on file for the 2012 Golf and GTI[1]. The car also has recalls on file, and several of them involve air bags[2][3][4][5][6].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 89 complaints with NHTSA[1]. Six mention a crash, one a fire and four an injury. None reports a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one part.
Here are the largest component groups:
| Component group | Complaints | Median mileage at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Engine[8] | 25 | 40,489 |
| Power train[9] | 16 | 12,693 |
| Air bags[10] | 15 | 19,071 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[11] | 13 | 51,100 |
| Electrical system[12] | 11 | 43,774 |
We also read a small sample of the complaint texts. It is too small to say how common any one problem is. Counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold.
- Engine. In a sample of complaints we read, owners describe a failed water pump that damaged the engine and a high-pressure fuel pump failure that left the car stalled[8].
- Power train. Owners describe trouble getting into gear, the car slipping into neutral, and engine revs rising with no movement[9].
- Fuel and propulsion. Owners of diesel cars describe a high-pressure fuel pump that failed and sent metal debris into the fuel system[11].
- Air bags. Owners describe a failed steering wheel clock spring with the air bag light on, long waits for recall parts, and crashes where the air bags did not deploy[10].
Some other groups are small. Speed control has 7 complaints[13] and brakes have 6[14]. Each of those groups lists 2 crashes[13][14]. We did not read the texts for those groups, so we say nothing about what failed.
Recalls
NHTSA lists six recalls for this car, newest first.
- Air bag inflator, repeat repair (19V862). Dated 2019-12-04[3]. It covers certain diesel cars thought to have been repaired earlier under a Takata air bag recall. The driver inflator may explode as the propellant breaks down over time in heat and humidity. Metal fragments could seriously hurt or kill the driver or passengers. Dealers replace the inflator at no charge[3]. Only 226 vehicles are potentially affected[3].
- Modifications during evaluation (18V329). Dated 2018-05-16[15]. Volkswagen says changes it made to test vehicles may mean the affected cars do not meet all regulatory requirements. That could raise the risk of a crash, fire or injury. Dealers repair the cars to comply, or Volkswagen buys them back if needed, at no charge[15]. Potentially affected units: 252[15].
- Driver air bag inflator (18V148). Dated 2018-03-06[4]. The inflator can explode when the driver air bag deploys, and metal fragments could seriously injure or kill occupants. Dealers fit a different inflator at no charge[4]. The recall covers 363,713 vehicles across several models and partly replaces recall 16V078[4].
- Remedy pending
Driver air bag inflator (16V078). Dated 2016-02-10[5]. The inflator could rupture in a crash and send metal fragments into the cabin, with a risk of serious injury or death. Volkswagen said it would replace the inflators at no charge[5] and notify owners again when parts are available. The remedy was not yet available at that point. It covers 659,493 vehicles across several models[5]. - Air bag clock spring (15V483). Dated 2015-08-04[6]. Debris can tear the clock spring, a cable that carries power to the driver air bag as the wheel is turned. The driver air bag could then lose power and not deploy in a crash. If the air bag light is off, dealers add a protective cover. If it is on, dealers install a new clock spring. Both repairs are at no charge[6]. The recall covers 415,825 vehicles across several models[6].
- Diesel injector line (11V490). Dated 2011-10-03[16]. It applies to cars with the 2.0L TDI diesel engine[16]. Resonance in the fuel system can crack injector line number 2 and leak fuel, which could start a fire[16]. Volkswagen installs an improved line and vibration dampers at no charge[16]. It covers 168,275 vehicles across several models[16].
Fuel economy
EPA lists several versions. All are front-wheel drive except the Golf R. The estimated annual fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
| Version | City / Hwy / Combined MPG | Fuel | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Golf 2.5L 5-cyl, Automatic (S6)[17] | 24 / 31 / 26 | Regular | $2,600 |
| Golf 2.5L 5-cyl, Manual 5-spd[18] | 23 / 33 / 26 | Regular | $2,600 |
| GTI 2.0L turbo, Automatic (S6)[19] | 24 / 33 / 27 | Premium | $3,050 |
| GTI 2.0L turbo, Manual 6-spd[20] | 21 / 31 / 25 | Premium | $3,300 |
| Golf 2.0L turbo diesel, Automatic (S6)[7] | 29 / 37 / 32 | Diesel | $3,000 |
| Golf 2.0L turbo diesel, Manual 6-spd[21] | 29 / 39 / 32 | Diesel | $3,000 |
| Golf R 2.0L turbo, Manual 6-spd, AWD[22] | 19 / 27 / 22 | Premium | $3,750 |
The diesel versions have the best combined rating at 32 MPG[7][21]. The Golf R has the lowest at 22 MPG[22].
Safety ratings
Our data holds only a rollover rating. The 4 DR front-wheel-drive versions get 4 stars for rollover, with a rollover risk of 12.1%[23][24]. The 2 DR versions are not rated[25][26]. We have no crash test stars to report.
Engine and size
EPA lists the 2.0L 4-cylinder in this car at 140 to 256 hp, depending on version[27]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US cars.
| Version | Length | Width | Height | Wheelbase | Curb weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GTI hatch (2 DR and 4 DR)[28][29] | 166 in | 70 in | 58 in | 102 in | 3,062 lb |
| Golf 4 DR hatch 2.5/TDI[30] | 165 in | 70 in | 58 in | 102 in | 3,060 lb |
| Golf 4 DR wagon/TDI wagon[31] | 179 in | 70 in | 59 in | 102 in | 3,285 lb |

NHTSA counts for the Golf/GTI by model year[2]:
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2010 | 122 | 5 |
| 2011 | 165 | 6 |
| 2012 | 89 | 6 |
| 2013 | 82 | 5 |
| 2014 | 22 | 5 |
| 2015 | 322 | 14 |
| 2016 | 237 | 14 |
The 2012 car has fewer complaints than 2010 and 2011, and more than 2013 and 2014. Its 6 recalls match 2011 and sit one above 2010, 2013 and 2014[2]. The 2015 and 2016 model years have more recalls and more complaints than 2012 in this table. Counts are not adjusted for sales, so treat them as a rough guide within the same model.
Should you buy a used 2012 Golf/GTI?
The complaint count is lower than several nearby years, and the crash and injury numbers are small[1][2]. The recall list matters more than the complaint count: four of the six recalls involve air bags, so ask for the VIN check and written proof that each repair was done[3][4][5][6]. The 16V078 notice said parts were not yet available, so confirm its current status for the exact car[5]. If you are looking at a diesel, ask about the fuel injector line recall and the fuel pump complaints we saw in a small sample[16][11]. Repair history, not the model year alone, should guide the decision.
