2007 Volvo S80: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 24 owner complaints for the 2007 Volvo S80, and none mention a crash, fire or injury[1]. The model year also has 5 recalls, so check that each one was done before you buy[2].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 24 complaints with NHTSA[1]. These are unverified reports, and one complaint can name several parts[1]. The counts below show where owners pointed.
- Structure, 6 complaints[4]. In a sample of complaints we read, four describe rust on the front subframe, the frame piece that supports the front suspension, steering and engine. Some of those owners say it affects V8 models[4]. One describes water leaking in near the windshield.
- Electrical system, 4 complaints[5]. Owners in our sample describe headlight wiring that shorted or bulbs that failed. One describes wipers that would not behave.
- Engine, 4 complaints[6]. Two of the four in our sample describe oil leaking.
- Steering, 4 complaints[7]. In a sample of complaints we read, owners describe a power steering hose or pump failing and the wheel becoming hard to turn.
The samples are small, so treat them as examples of what owners reported, not as a ranking of failure rates. Smaller groups had 3 or fewer complaints each[8][9][10][11].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 5 recalls for this model year[2]. Newest first:
- Seat belt cable (20V378). The steel cable that holds the front seat belt anchor can wear out over time. Then the belt may not hold the person in a crash, which raises injury risk. Dealers replace the anchor cable on both front seats. The recall began December 10, 2020[12].
- Power steering hose (11V378). On some 2007 S80s built from March 8, 2006 through May 16, 2007, the return hose may have been routed wrongly[13]. It can burst and leak fluid, and the driver can suddenly lose power steering. Dealers inspect the routing and repair it free. The fact lists the start as expected in August 2011[13].
- Portable GPS battery (10V566). The battery in certain Garmin 760 portable GPS units may overheat and could cause a fire[14]. Owners are told to stop using the unit and check with Garmin. The battery is replaced free. The recall began November 18, 2010[14].
- Tire label and TPMS software (10V335). The tire label and a page in the owner's manual show a wrong maximum inflation pressure. The tire pressure monitor software also has a wrong trigger level. Dealers update the labels and software free. The fact lists the start as expected on or about August 27, 2010[15].
- Wiper software (09V139). Software in the central electronic module may keep the wipers from working, or turn them on by themselves. That adds crash risk in bad weather. Dealers inspect the module and update the software free. The recall began May 15, 2009[16].
One owner complaint in our sample says a steering hose failure happened on a car that was not part of the steering recall[7]. Ask a dealer to check your VIN.
Fuel economy
EPA lists three versions, all on premium fuel.
| Version | City / highway / combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 3.2L 6-cyl, front-wheel drive[17] | 16 / 25 / 19 | $4,350 |
| 3.2L 6-cyl, all-wheel drive[3] | 16 / 24 / 19 | $4,350 |
| 4.4L 8-cyl, all-wheel drive[18] | 15 / 23 / 18 | $4,550 |
EPA's fuel cost uses its current fuel price assumptions, not what gas cost when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA lists the 2007 S80 as not rated in its 5-Star Safety Ratings[19]. That means there is no star score to compare.
Engine and size
The EPA lists a 3.2L 6-cylinder and a 4.4L 8-cylinder[3][18]. Dimensions are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.
| Measure | 3.2 V6 AWD | 4.4 V8 AWD |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 191 in | 191 in |
| Width | 73 in | 73 in |
| Height | 59 in | 59 in |
| Wheelbase | 112 in | 112 in |
| Curb weight | 3,486 lb | 3,840 lb |

The 2007 model year has 24 complaints and 5 recalls[2]. Several years have more complaints: 1999 to 2004, 2008 with 26 and 2010 with 27[2]. Others have fewer: 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2011 through 2016[2]. For recalls, 2001 and 2008 have 7 each, more than the 5 for 2007[2]. Counts are not adjusted for sales, so they show what was filed, not how likely a problem is.
Should you buy a used 2007 S80?
The complaint count is moderate for this model, and no complaint reports a crash, fire or injury[1][2]. Ask for proof that all 5 recalls were done, especially the steering hose and seat belt cable[12][13]. Have a mechanic look at the front subframe for rust, and check for oil leaks and headlight wiring problems, since owners in our samples describe them[4][5][6]. Weigh fuel cost too, at about $4,350 to $4,550 a year on EPA's assumptions[3][18][17].
