2008 BMW X5: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 235 owner complaints on file for the 2008 BMW X5[1]. It also has 13 recalls, and several of them involve air bag inflators that can rupture[2][3].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 235 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Three mention a crash, 12 a fire and 2 an injury, and none report a death[1]. These are unverified reports from owners, and one complaint can name more than one component.
The largest groups are:
| Component group | Complaints | Fires |
|---|---|---|
| Engine[5] | 85 | 8 |
| Air bags[6] | 74 | 0 |
| Electrical system[7] | 39 | 6 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[8] | 31 | 0 |
| Brakes[9] | 19 | 0 |
| Power train[10] | 18 | 0 |
Engine. The median mileage at failure for engine complaints is 69,000[5]. In the sample of engine complaints we read, every text describes overheating, a warning that the engine is too hot, or a failed water pump. Several owners say the car lost power or the engine shut down while driving[5].
Air bags. Two air bag complaints mention a crash and two an injury[6]. In 8 of the 12 air bag complaints we read, owners describe a passenger-side air bag or restraint warning light that comes on, sometimes blamed on the passenger seat sensor[6]. A few others say they were told repair parts for an air bag recall were not available yet[6].
Electrical system. The median mileage at failure is 81,440[7]. The sample of electrical complaints we read is mixed. Owners describe battery drain, burnt fuel pump wiring, a sunroof drain that led to electrical faults, and overheating that was filed under electrical[7].
Fuel and propulsion. In the sample we read, some owners describe stalling or sudden loss of power. Others say they were waiting for recall repair parts[8]. Brakes (19 complaints) and power train (18) are smaller groups, and we did not read samples of those texts[9][10].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 13 recalls for the 2008 X5[2]. Many of them cover several models and only "certain" vehicles, so a recall applies to your car only if its build and registration fit. BMW customer service lists 1-800-525-7417 in the recall records[3].
Newest first:
- PCV valve heater (22V119). The heater for the crankcase ventilation valve may short circuit and overheat, which raises the risk of fire while driving or soon after parking[11]. The fix is a new wiring harness with fuse protection, free of charge. The record says the remedy was still being developed, and that cars repaired under earlier recalls must come back[11].
- Passenger air bag inflator (20V016). Interim replacement inflators may explode as the propellant breaks down over time, which can send metal fragments at occupants and cause serious injury or death[3]. Owners are advised not to drive until the repair is done. Dealers replace the passenger front air bag free of charge[3].
- Driver air bag inflator (20V017). The same kind of interim inflator problem on the driver side, with the same risk[12]. Dealers replace the inflator on X5 models, free of charge[12].
- Passenger air bag inflator (19V017). Inflators in the passenger front air bag module may explode in a crash after long exposure to humidity and temperature swings, with the risk of serious injury or death[13]. Owners are advised not to drive until it is repaired, and dealers replace the module free of charge[13].
- Passenger air bag inflator (18V030). Another passenger inflator recall, with the same risk and the same advice not to drive until the repair is done[14]. Which cars are covered depends on the state where the vehicle was registered[14]. The record says the recall was expected to begin in March 2018[14].
- PCV valve heater (17V683). The heater may short circuit and melt parts in the valve, with a risk of fire even when the car is off[15]. Dealers replace the heater free of charge[15]. Recall 22V119 later superseded and expanded it[11].
- Remedy pending
Passenger air bag inflator (17V020). The inflator may rupture and throw metal fragments, with a risk of serious injury or death[16]. Owners are advised not to drive until the repair is done. The record says remedy parts were not yet available and owners would get a second notice when they were[16]. - Fuel pump (16V746). Poorly crimped wire contacts in the in-tank fuel pump may melt the connector, causing a fuel leak, and the pump may stop, which can stall the engine and raise the risk of a crash[17]. Dealers replace the fuel pump module free of charge[17].
- Passenger air bag inflator (16V364). The inflator may rupture with metal fragments striking occupants, with a risk of serious injury or death[18]. Only certain cars registered in listed states are covered. Owners are advised not to drive until repaired, and dealers replace the inflator or air bag module free of charge[18].
- Driver air bag inflator (16V071). Too much internal pressure when the driver air bag deploys may rupture the inflator, with a risk of serious injury or death[19]. Dealers replace the module or inflator free of charge[19].
- Brake vacuum pump (13V045). The pump may leak a small amount of oil into the hose, which can reduce power assist in braking, lengthen stopping distance and lead to a crash[20]. It covers 8-cylinder X5 models built in a set date range[20]. Dealers replace the brake vacuum line with one that has a check valve, free of charge[20].
- Fuel pump (10V518). A manufacturing fault in the fuel pump on certain 2008 X5 models with 6-cylinder engines may cause the pump to wear faster, which can lead to a malfunction and engine stall[21]. Dealers replace the in-tank fuel pump free of charge[21].
- Rear stabilizer bar (08V170). A small recall of 55 cars that had a sports-suspension stabilizer on the rear axle instead of the standard one, which could cause oversteer in fast lane changes at high speed[22]. Dealers replace the rear stabilizer[22].
Several air bag recalls say owners are advised not to drive until the remedy is performed[3][13][14][16][18]. Recall 22V119 says the remedy was still being developed[11]. Recall 17V020 says remedy parts were not yet available[16]. Do not assume every repair can be done today. Ask BMW or a dealer about your own car.
Fuel economy
EPA lists two versions, both with an automatic (S6) transmission, premium fuel and 4-wheel or all-wheel drive[4][23].
| Version | City | Highway | Combined | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| X5 3.0si (3.0L, 6-cyl)[4] | 15 MPG | 21 MPG | 18 MPG | $4,550 |
| X5 4.8i (4.8L, 8-cyl)[23] | 14 MPG | 19 MPG | 16 MPG | $5,150 |
The fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new[4].
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 4-door all-wheel-drive X5 a rollover rating of 4 stars, with a rollover risk of 17.4%[24]. Our data has no other star ratings for this model year.
Engine and size
The two EPA test versions are a 3.0L 6-cylinder and a 4.8L 8-cylinder[4][23]. The sizes below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models[25].

Among X5 model years from 2000 to 2026, only 2011 (331 complaints) and 2012 (292) have more complaints than 2008, which has 235[2]. The neighboring years are lower: 2007 has 130 complaints, 2009 has 157 and 2010 has 143[2].
For recalls, 2008 has 13[2]. That is the same as 2007 and fewer than 2009 (16), 2010 (19), 2011 (18) and 2012 (14)[2]. These counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so they show where reports and recalls pile up, not how likely a single car is to fail.
Should you buy a used 2008 X5?
The 2008 X5 sits near the top of its model line for complaints, and it has a long recall list[2]. Engine overheating and water pump failures, and passenger air bag warning lights, appear in the complaint samples we read[5][6]. Before buying, check the exact car against the recalls above, especially the air bag inflator recalls and the PCV valve heater recall[11][3][13]. Ask for proof of which repairs were done, because some recalls say remedy parts were not yet available when they were filed[11][16]. EPA rates the two versions at 16 and 18 MPG combined, with annual fuel costs of $4,550 and $5,150[4][23]. These are owner reports and recall records, not a test of any one car, so a pre-purchase inspection still matters.
