2016 Chevrolet Cruze: problems, recalls and fuel economy
Owners filed 250 complaints with NHTSA about the 2016 Cruze, and engine problems are named most often[1][2]. Four recalls are on file, and each one has a free remedy that has begun[3][4][5][6].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 250 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Of those, 19 mention a crash, 6 a fire and 14 an injury, and none report a death[1]. These are unverified owner reports. One complaint can name more than one part of the car, so the group counts below do not add up to 250[1].
| Component group | Complaints | Crashes | Fires | Injuries |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engine[2] | 108 | 3 | 3 | 1 |
| Electrical system[10] | 59 | 2 | 4 | 1 |
| Unknown or other[11] | 43 | 2 | 2 | 1 |
| Fuel/propulsion system[12] | 35 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| Power train[13] | 31 | 0 | 1 | 0 |
| Air bags[14] | 21 | 12 | 0 | 8 |
We read a small sample of complaint texts for four of these groups: engine, power train, fuel/propulsion and electrical. This is what owners describe, and it is not a measure of how common anything is.
- Engine. In a sample of 12 engine complaints we read, 6 describe the car stalling, shutting off or losing power, including after the stop-start feature switched the engine off[2]. Three describe fire or flames under the hood[2].
- Power train. In a sample of 12, 6 describe shifting, transmission, clutch or park-position trouble[13]. Three describe overheating or coolant problems[13].
- Fuel/propulsion. In a sample of 12, 6 describe the engine stalling or shutting off[12]. Three describe a fuel smell or leak[12].
- Electrical. In a sample of 12, 5 describe sudden stalling or systems cutting out, and 3 describe fire[10].
The air bag group is smaller, but 12 of its 21 complaints mention a crash and 8 an injury[14]. The median mileage at failure in the engine group is 66,445[2]. In the electrical group it is 40,500[10].
Recalls
NHTSA lists four recalls for this model year, newest first. Each one describes a free remedy that has begun.
- Fuel leak after a rear impact (18V304). Dated May 10, 2018, covering certain 2016 to 2018 Cruze LS cars with a gasoline engine and a tire inflator kit instead of a spare tire[3]. In a rear-impact crash and rollover, fuel could leak, which raises the risk of fire. Dealers install a lock-ring on the fuel tank that shields the vapor pressure sensor from damage. It is free[3].
- Front seat-back weld (17V057). Dated January 26, 2017, covering certain 2016 and 2017 Cruze cars[4]. A bracket in the driver or front passenger seat-back may be welded incorrectly. In a crash the seat-back could break and the head restraint may not work properly, which raises the risk of injury. Dealers inspect the front passenger seats and replace any with a badly welded frame, free of charge[4].
- Park lock lever (16V502). Dated July 5, 2016[5]. The main target was certain Buick and Chevrolet Malibu models. It also names 2011 to 2016 Cruze cars that may have received a similar faulty replacement lever. The key could be removed when the transmission is not in PARK, so the car could roll away as people get out. Dealers inspect and, if needed, replace the key cylinder lock housing, free of charge[5].
- Headlight aim code (16V498). Dated July 1, 2016, covering certain 2016 Cruze cars built November 5, 2015 to May 26, 2016[6]. The headlights lack the identifier code used to aim them correctly in service. Poor aim can reduce night visibility. GM mails owners instructions and labels with the correct code, and a dealer can help apply the label, free of charge[6].
You can call Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 about these recalls[3]. Optional: remove, or keep as general advice.
Fuel economy
EPA lists several versions of the 2016 Cruze. Combined ratings run from 26 MPG to 34 MPG[15][8]. All listed versions use regular fuel and front-wheel drive. Annual fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
| Version | City / highway / combined MPG | EPA annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| Cruze, 1.4L turbo, Automatic (S6)[8] | 30 / 40 / 34 | $1,950 |
| Cruze Premier, 1.4L turbo, Automatic (S6)[16] | 30 / 40 / 34 | $1,950 |
| Cruze, 1.4L turbo, Manual 6-spd[17] | 28 / 39 / 32 | $2,100 |
| Cruze Limited Eco, 1.4L turbo, Manual 6-spd[18] | 28 / 40 / 33 | $2,050 |
| Cruze Limited Eco, 1.4L turbo, Automatic 6-spd[19] | 26 / 37 / 30 | $2,250 |
| Cruze Limited, 1.4L turbo, Automatic (S6)[20] | 26 / 36 / 30 | $2,250 |
| Cruze Limited, 1.4L turbo, Manual 6-spd[21] | 26 / 37 / 30 | $2,250 |
| Cruze Limited, 1.8L, Manual 6-spd[22] | 25 / 35 / 29 | $2,300 |
| Cruze Limited, 1.8L, Automatic (S6)[15] | 22 / 34 / 26 | $2,600 |
The Cruze Limited with the 1.8L engine and automatic is the thirstiest listed version at 26 MPG combined[15]. The Cruze and Cruze Premier with the 1.4L turbo and automatic are the best at 34 MPG combined[8][16].
Safety ratings
NHTSA rates the 4 DR FWD version at 4 stars overall[9]. Frontal crash is 5 stars, side crash is 4 stars and rollover is 4 stars[9]. The rollover risk is listed as 10.7%[9].
Engine and size
EPA lists 138 to 148 hp for the 1.4L 4-cylinder, depending on version[23]. The 1.8L 4-cylinder is rated 138 to 140 hp[24].
Sizes below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.
How 2016 compares with other years
Show the numbers
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2011 | 732 | 7 |
| 2012 | 865 | 7 |
| 2013 | 587 | 5 |
| 2014 | 702 | 10 |

| 2017 | 201 | 2 |
| 2018 | 109 | 3 |
| 2019 | 23 | 2 |
NHTSA counts 250 complaints and 4 recalls for the 2016 Cruze[7]. Other model years of the Cruze look like this.
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2011[7] | 732 | 7 |
| 2012[7] | 865 | 7 |
| 2013[7] | 587 | 5 |
| 2014[7] | 702 | 10 |
| 2015[7] | 252 | 4 |
| 2016[7] | 250 | 4 |
| 2017[7] | 201 | 2 |
| 2018[7] | 109 | 3 |
| 2019[7] | 23 | 2 |
2015 has 252 complaints, only 2 more than 2016, and 2011 to 2014 all have far more[7]. Only 2017 to 2019 have fewer[7]. The 2016 recall count ties 2015 and is below 2011 to 2014[7]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so treat them as a rough guide.
Should you buy a used 2016 Cruze?
The complaint count of 250 is far lower than the 2011 to 2014 model years, though close to 2015[1][7]. Engine complaints are the biggest group, and the complaint texts we read include stalling and fire reports, so ask about any history of either[2]. All four recalls have a free remedy that has begun, so confirm with a dealer that each one was done on the car you are considering[3][4][5][6]. Fuel economy depends a lot on the version, from 26 to 34 MPG combined, so check which engine and gearbox the car has[15][8].
