2012 Chevrolet Cruze: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 865 owner complaints for the 2012 Cruze[1], the most of any Cruze model year listed, and seven recalls are on file[2]. Check recall paperwork and the brake history before you buy one.
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 865 owner complaints for the 2012 Cruze[1]. Of these, 62 mention a crash, 18 a fire and 30 an injury, and none reports a death[1]. Optional: add[1] after the sentence.
Here are the biggest component groups:
| Component group | Complaints | Crashes | Fires |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine[5] | 308 | 10 | 15 |
| Electrical system[6] | 196 | 10 | 3 |
| Brakes[7] | 150 | 26 | 1 |
| Power train[8] | 137 | 5 | 3 |
| Electronic stability control[9] | 108 | 5 | 0 |
| Steering[10] | 103 | 7 | 1 |
The engine group is the largest and has the most fire mentions[5]. Brakes has the most crash mentions[7].
We also read a small sample of complaint texts for the four largest groups. These are only a sample, so treat them as examples and not as a count of all owners.
- Engine. In the sample we read, owners describe unhappiness after the engine shield recall repair, such as exposure to road spray, sluggish response or a power reduced warning. A couple of texts mention a coolant smell or an overheating warning[5].
- Electrical system. Owners describe flickering lights, warning lights and sudden electrical shutdowns. A couple of texts mention a coolant smell inside the cabin[6].
- Brakes. In the sample, owners describe weak or lost braking when backing up, and squeal, grind or pop noises when braking[7]. That matches the brake assist recall below.
- Power train. Owners describe rough or delayed shifting, grinding, jerking and rolling back on hills. Others describe hesitation or stalling when accelerating[8].
Recalls
NHTSA lists seven recalls for this car, newest first. Repairs in each are described as free of charge.
- Park lock lever (16V502). Some Cruze cars were serviced with a defective replacement electronic park lock lever. The key could be removed when the car is not in park. The car could then roll away as people get out, which raises the risk of injury. Dealers inspect and, if needed, replace the key cylinder lock housing[11].
- Driver air bag (14V300). This expands two earlier air bag recalls. A shorting bar in the driver air bag may touch the terminals. The bag might not deploy in a crash, which raises the risk of injury. Dealers replace the steering wheel air bag coil. It covers 31,520 vehicles across several models, including Cruze cars built from December 7, 2011 to July 25, 2012[12].
- Brake assist (13V360). An electric vacuum pump that helps the brakes may not switch on. That can mean less braking help, so the driver must press harder or farther, which raises the risk of a crash. It covers 292,879 Cruze cars with the 1.4L turbo engine and 6T40 automatic[13]. Dealers replace a small switch in the vacuum pipe part of the power brake system[13].[13].
- Driver air bag (13V023). Same shorting bar problem, 4,167 units across several models[14]. Dealers replace the steering wheel air bag coil[14].
- Driver air bag (12V522). Same shorting bar problem, 2,949 units across several models[15]. Dealers replace the steering wheel air bag coil[15].
- Fuel tank straps (12V289). Some welds for the fuel tank strap brackets may be missing, on 53,239 Cruze cars built through May 14, 2012[16]. In a crash the tank could come loose and leak fuel, and a fire is possible. Dealers check for missing welds and secure the brackets with fasteners[16].
- Oil in the engine shield (12V288). Spilled oil, such as after an oil change, can collect in the engine shield near hot parts and catch fire. This covers 413,148 Cruze cars built through May 31, 2012[17]. Dealers modify the engine shield. On manual cars they also tape the power steering wire harness[17].
Our data does not show whether a given car has had each repair done. Ask for proof, or have a dealer check the VIN.
Fuel economy
EPA ratings depend on the engine and gearbox. All are front-wheel drive and use regular gas. Annual cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
| Version | City / Hwy / Combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| Cruze Eco, 1.4L turbo, manual 6-speed[3] | 28 / 40 / 32 | $2,100 |
| Cruze Eco, 1.4L turbo, automatic 6-speed[18] | 26 / 38 / 30 | $2,250 |
| Cruze, 1.4L turbo, manual 6-speed[19] | 26 / 37 / 30 | $2,250 |
| Cruze, 1.4L turbo, automatic (S6)[20] | 26 / 36 / 30 | $2,250 |
| Cruze, 1.8L, manual 6-speed[21] | 25 / 35 / 29 | $2,300 |
| Cruze, 1.8L, automatic (S6)[22] | 22 / 34 / 26 | $2,600 |
The Eco with the manual gearbox is the thriftiest at 32 combined MPG[3]. The 1.8L automatic is the thirstiest at 26[22].
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 4-door front-wheel-drive Cruze 5 stars overall, 5 stars in the frontal test and 5 stars in the side test[4]. The rollover rating is 4 stars, with a rollover risk of 10.9%[4].
Engine and size
The EPA test car list shows two engines. The 1.4L 4-cylinder is rated 138 to 140 hp depending on version[23]. The 1.8L 4-cylinder is also rated 138 to 140 hp depending on version[24].
Size comes from Canadian-market specifications[25] for the four-door sedan, so U.S. cars can differ slightly.
How 2012 compares with other years
Show the numbers
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |

NHTSA data covers nine Cruze model years. The 2012 model has the most complaints of all of them: 865, against 732 for 2011, 587 for 2013 and 702 for 2014[2]. Complaints fall in the later years, down to 23 for 2019[2].
Recalls are a different picture. The 2012 car has 7, tied with 2011[2]. The 2014 model has the most, with 10[2]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so use them only to compare Cruze years with each other.
Should you buy a used 2012 Cruze?
The 2012 Cruze has the largest complaint count of any Cruze year listed[2], and seven recalls, three of them for the same air bag part[12][14][15]. Its 5-star overall crash rating is a plus[4], and fuel economy runs from 26 to 32 combined MPG depending on version[22][3], up to 32 combined MPG for the Eco manual[3]. Before buying, confirm that every recall repair has been done, especially the brake vacuum pump, engine shield and air bag coil[13][17][12]. Owners in the samples we read also describe brake and shifting trouble, so ask about service records and take a careful test drive[7][8].
