2006 GMC Envoy: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 587 owner complaints on file for the 2006 Envoy[1], and fuel system reports lead the list. The car also has 8 recalls on record[2], so check recall status before you buy or keep one.
Reported problems
These are owner complaints sent to NHTSA. They are unverified, and one complaint can name more than one part. Of the 587 complaints[1], 15 mention a crash[1], 28 a fire[1] and 10 injuries[1]. No deaths are reported[1].

Fuel system. In a sample of 12 complaints we read, In a sample of 12 complaints we read, every one mentions a fuel gauge that reads empty, swings between empty and full, or reads wrong, and about half tie it to filling the tank[4].. Some owners also mention a check engine light or a low fuel alarm. One owner says the car ran out of gas while the gauge showed full[4]. This group has no crashes, fires or injuries[4].
Electrical. This group carries the most fires, 23 of its 137 complaints[5]. In a sample of 12 texts, 3 describe a burning smell or melted wiring, such as a blower resistor or fuse block[5]. Another 3 describe stalling, a loss of power, or stability control and ABS acting when they should not[5]. Six mention the fuel gauge again[5].
Exterior lighting. In a sample of 12 texts, about half describe headlights going out or coming on late while driving[6]. Two describe glare from the headlights or high beams[6].
Engine. In a sample of 12 texts, 6 describe the engine stalling, shutting off or showing a reduced power warning while driving[7]. The sample is small, so it does not tell you how often this happens across all cars.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 8 recalls for this model year[2]. Newest first:
- Driver's door switch module (15V599). Dated 2015-09-24[12]. Fluid can get into the driver's door master power window switch module and corrode the circuit board. Some cars were earlier given a protective coating instead of a new part. GM says the coating may not remove the risk of a short and a fire, even when the car is parked[12]. Dealers install a new driver's door switch module at no charge[12].
- Headlamp driver module (15V519). Dated 2015-08-14[13]. The module can overheat and fail, so the headlights and daytime running lights do not come on. That makes it harder to see the road and be seen, which raises crash risk. Dealers replace the module at no charge[13]. The recall covers 429,170 vehicles across several models[13].
- Remedy pending
Driver's door module (14V404). Dated 2014-07-02[14]. Same corrosion and short problem. It can make the door lock and window switches work only some of the time, and it can overheat and cause smoke or a fire, even when the car is off. Owners were told to park outside until the repair is done. The record says parts were not yet available, so the remedy was not yet available when it was filed[14]. It gives a new fix to cars that only got the earlier coating[14]. - Driver's door module (13V248). Dated 2013-06-13[15]. Same problem. Dealers tested the module, then coated it if it worked or replaced it if it did not[15]. This expanded recall 12V406[15].
- Driver's door module (12V406). Dated 2012-08-16[16]. Same problem, first covering cars sold or registered in certain states. The record says parts were expected in March 2013[16].
- Passenger air bag sensing (06V417). Dated 2006-10-31[17]. It involves 794 vehicles[17] with cloth seats later fitted with aftermarket leather seat covers. The covers can make the passenger sensing system switch the air bag on or off wrongly, which can raise injury risk in a crash. No compatible cover exists, so GM offered to repurchase these vehicles[17].
- Tire and loading label (05V552). Dated 2005-12-07[18]. Labels listed a wrong vehicle capacity weight, which could lead to wrong loading or tire inflation. Owners get a corrected label[18].
- Power steering hose (05V455). Dated 2005-10-05[19]. A hose built out of specification can crack during hard turning and leak. That can mean lost steering assist, and fluid on hot engine parts could start a fire. Dealers inspect the hose and replace it if needed[19].
Ask a GMC dealer to check the VIN for open recalls.
Fuel economy
EPA lists a 4.2L 6-cylinder and a 5.3L 8-cylinder, both with a 4-speed automatic and regular gas[20][3]. Combined ratings run from 15 to 17 mpg across versions[20][3][21][22].
- Envoy 2WD: 14 city, 20 highway, 16 combined with the 6-cylinder[20]. With the 8-cylinder it is 14, 20 and 17[3].
- Envoy 4WD: 14 city, 20 highway, 16 combined with either engine[23][24].
- Envoy XL 2WD: 14 city, 19 highway, 15 combined with the 6-cylinder[21]. With the 8-cylinder it is 14, 19 and 16[25].
- Envoy XL 4WD: 13 city, 18 highway, 15 combined with either engine[22][26].
- Envoy XUV: 15 combined for 2WD and for 4WD, both with the 6-cylinder[27][28].
EPA estimates annual fuel cost from $3,950 to $4,450 depending on version[3][21]. These costs use EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the car was new.
