2007 GMC Envoy: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 253 owner complaints on file for the 2007 GMC Envoy[1] and lists 5 recalls for it[2]. The biggest complaint groups are exterior lighting, the electrical system and the gasoline fuel system[3][4][5].
Most reported problems
Owners filed 253 complaints[1]. Of those, 8 mention a crash, 16 a fire and 5 injuries[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component. The groups below overlap, so do not add them up.
The three largest groups:
- Exterior lighting: 69 complaints, median mileage at failure 107,500[3].
- Electrical system: 67 complaints, median mileage 94,700[4].
- Fuel system, gasoline: 63 complaints, median mileage 52,106[5].
Smaller groups are visibility (19)[7], fuel/propulsion (16)[8], visibility/wiper (16)[9], engine (13)[10] and fuel system, other (10)[11].
Headlights. In a sample of 12 lighting complaints we read[3], 10 describe headlights or low beams going out or flickering while driving[3]. Several owners say the high beams or fog lights still worked[3]. In 3 of the 12, the owner says a dealer or GM told them the vehicle was not in a recall or had no recall on record[3].
Fuel gauge. In a sample of 12 gasoline fuel system complaints we read[5], 10 describe a fuel gauge that reads empty or wrong, sometimes with a warning light[5]. Several owners name the fuel sending unit[5]. Two say they ran out of fuel, and some mention repair quotes[5].
Door window switch. The electrical sample holds 12 texts, but one text appears four times, so it has 9 different ones[4]. Of those 9, 4 describe a driver's door window switch or module that failed, and some mention melting, smoke or fire[4]. In a sample of 12 visibility complaints, 6 describe the driver's door window switch or door locks failing, 5 of those 6 mention melting, a burning smell or smoke[7]. In 3 of the 12, the owner says they were told the vehicle was not included in the window switch recall[7]. The electrical group lists 12 fires[4].
Other patterns. In the electrical sample, 3 of the 9 different texts describe the vehicle stalling or losing power while driving[4]. In the visibility sample, 3 of 12 describe the rear window shattering on its own while parked[7].
Recalls
Five recalls are on file, newest first. Four of them deal with the same part, the driver's door master window switch module. Each recall covers certain vehicles, and some also cover other makes and models[12].
- Door switch module (15V599). Reported 2015-09-24[13]. Fluid can get into the driver's door master window switch module and corrode it, which can short the circuit board. This recall is for vehicles that earlier got a protective coating instead of a new module. The coating may not remove the risk of a fire, even while the vehicle is parked. Dealers fit a new switch module in the driver's door at no cost to the owner. The recall began on November 2, 2015[13].
- Headlamp driver module (15V519). Reported 2015-08-14[14]. The module can overheat and fail, so the headlamps and daytime running lights do not turn on. That makes it harder to see the road and harder for others to see the vehicle, which raises the risk of a crash. Dealers replace the module free of charge. The recall began on May 17, 2016[14].
- Remedy pending
Door module, new remedy (14V404). Reported 2014-07-02[12]. Same fluid and corrosion problem. A short can make the door lock and window switches work on and off or stop working. It can also overheat the module and cause odor, smoke or fire, even when the vehicle is not in use. Owners were told to park outside until the repair. Dealers check the part number and install a new door module if needed, free of charge. This recall gave a new remedy to every vehicle covered by 13V248, so vehicles that had the module modified but not replaced must be repaired again. At the time of the notice, the remedy was not yet available, because parts were not in stock. GM mailed an interim letter in August 2014 and planned a second letter when parts arrived[12]. - Door module expansion (13V248). Reported 2013-06-13[15]. This expanded 12V406 to more vehicles. The risk is the same: a short, overheating, smoke or fire, even when parked. Dealers test the driver's door module. If it works, they apply a protective coating. If not, they replace it, free of charge. The recall began on August 2, 2013[15].
- Door module, first recall (12V406). Reported 2012-08-16[16]. It covered vehicles sold or registered in a list of states and Washington, DC. The problem and risk are the same as above. Owners were advised to park outside until the repair. The notice said parts were expected in March 2013[16].
The repair for the door module changed across these recalls[12][15][16]. If you are looking at a specific vehicle, ask a GMC dealer whether each recall was completed. GMC customer service is 1-800-462-8782[13].
Fuel economy
EPA ratings for the 2007 Envoy are close across versions. All are 4-speed automatics that run on regular fuel[17][18][6][19][20].
| Version | City / highway / combined MPG | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 2WD, 4.2L 6-cyl[17] | 14 / 20 / 16 | $4,200 |
| 4WD, 4.2L 6-cyl[18] | 14 / 20 / 16 | $4,200 |
| 2WD, 5.3L 8-cyl[6] | 14 / 20 / 17 | $3,950 |
| 4WD, 5.3L 8-cyl[19] | 13 / 19 / 16 | $4,200 |
| XL 4WD, 5.3L 8-cyl[20] | 14 / 19 / 16 | $4,200 |
The annual cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA lists a rollover rating of 4 stars for the 2007 Envoy, with a rollover risk of 19.1%[21][22]. Our data has no other star ratings for this year.

NHTSA counts for each Envoy model year[2]:
| Year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2002 | 557 | 15 |
| 2003 | 624 | 9 |
| 2004 | 704 | 2 |

| 2007 | 253 | 5 |
| 2008 | 77 | 0 |
| 2009 | 17 | 0 |
The 2007 model has fewer complaints than 2002 through 2006, and more than 2008 and 2009. For recalls, it has fewer than 2002, 2003 and 2006, and more than 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many vehicles were sold, so treat them as a rough guide[2].
Should you buy a used 2007 Envoy?
The clearest issue in the data is the driver's door window switch module. It has four recalls that mention a short and a possible fire, even when the vehicle is parked[13][12][15][16]. If you are considering one, ask whether those recalls were done on that exact vehicle. Headlight dropouts and fuel gauge trouble also show up in the complaints we read[3][5]. The 2007 year has fewer complaints than 2002 through 2006 and more than 2008 and 2009, and EPA estimates fuel cost at $3,950 to $4,200 a year[2][17][6].
