2007 Nissan Murano: problems, recalls and fuel economy
Owners have filed 676 complaints with NHTSA about the 2007 Nissan Murano, and the seats draw 221 of them, far more than any other part[1][2]. If you are looking at one, check the driver seat, look under the rear of the car for rust, and check the VIN for open recalls[2][3][4][5].
Most reported problems
NHTSA has 676 owner complaints on file for the 2007 Murano[1]. Of these, 6 mention a crash, 3 a fire and 6 an injury, with no deaths reported[1]. Complaints are unverified reports, and one complaint can name more than one part.
| Component group | Complaints | Median miles at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Seats[2] | 221 | 70,000 |
| Suspension[3] | 94 | 141,500 |
| Engine[8] | 71 | 104,670 |
| Structure[9] | 69 | 125,000 |
| Power train[10] | 63 | 84,000 |
| Unknown or other[11] | 54 | 87,840 |
| Electrical system[12] | 54 | 89,500 |
| Visibility[13] | 47 | 50,000 |
We read a small sample of complaints for four of these groups. Here is what owners describe.
- Driver seat frame. In 11 of 12 seat complaints we read, the driver seat frame or a bracket under it cracked, broke or came loose, and the seat rocked, leaned or dropped[2]. In 4 of them, the owner says the dealer or Nissan would not cover the repair or the owner paid for it[2]. The same broken seat bracket also shows up in 4 of 12 structure complaints we read[9].
- Rear subframe rust. In 7 of 12 suspension complaints we read, the rear subframe rusted through and broke or pulled away, and owners describe the back of the car fishtailing, pulling or going out of alignment[3]. Suspension complaints have a high median failure mileage of 141,500, which fits a problem that shows up on older, high-mileage cars[3].
- Engine cutting out. In 3 of 12 engine complaints we read, the engine shut off or stalled while driving[8]. Others describe a cracked engine mount (2 of 12) or an oil seal leak that damaged the transfer case (2 of 12)[8].
- Smaller items. In the structure sample, 2 of 12 describe a driver sun visor that will not stay up and 2 of 12 a rear hatch that failed[9]. In the suspension sample, 2 of 12 describe wheel bearings failing[3].
These themes come from a small sample. They show what some owners report, not how often a problem happens across all cars.
Recalls
NHTSA lists two recalls for this car. Both are handled by Nissan dealers[4][5].
- Intake air ducts (09V169). Filed in 2009 for 2003 to 2007 Murano models. The air ducts in the engine air intake can shrink as the material ages and come loose from the resonator they connect to. If that happens the engine may stall, which raises the risk of a crash. Dealers inspect the parts and repair or replace them at no charge[4].
- Passenger air bag sensor (08V521). Filed in 2008. A part inside the occupant classification control unit in the passenger seat cushion may be out of spec. It can lose its link to the air bag computer, and the passenger air bag may then be switched off in a crash. Dealers test the connection with a special tool and put in a new seat cushion if needed[5]. The recall summary names the 2009 Murano rather than the 2007, so check your VIN with Nissan or NHTSA to see if your car is included[5].
Fuel economy
Both versions use a 3.5L 6-cyl engine with an Automatic (variable gear ratios) and are rated on premium fuel[7][14].
The AWD model gives up 1 mpg in the city and in combined driving and costs about $250 more a year to fuel by EPA's estimate[7][14]. EPA's cost figure uses current fuel prices, not prices from when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 2007 Murano 4 stars for rollover, with a rollover risk of 15.1%[15]. That is the only NHTSA rating in our data for this car.
Engine and size
The EPA lists one engine, a 3.5L 6-cyl, with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive[7][14].
The sizes below are Canadian-market specifications, converted from metric, and can differ slightly from US models[16][17].
| Measurement | AWD SE | FWD SL |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 188 in | 188 in |
| Width | 74 in | 74 in |
| Height | 67 in | 67 in |
| Wheelbase | 111 in | 111 in |
| Curb weight | 4,017 lb | 3,880 lb |

Among the Murano model years NHTSA lists, 2007 has the fifth highest complaint count with 676[6]. Only 2005 (987), 2006 (803), 2003 (800) and 2004 (678) have more, and 2009 is close behind at 635[6]. Every year from 2010 on has 204 complaints or fewer[6].
The 2007 has 2 recalls, fewer than any other year from 2003 to 2009, which each have 4 or 6[6]. The list has no entry for 2008[6].
These counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, and older cars have had more years to collect complaints.
Should you buy a used 2007 Murano?
The 2007 Murano has a lot of complaints, and seats lead by a wide margin with 221[2]. In the complaints we read, owners describe broken brackets under the driver seat and, at higher mileage, rusted rear subframes[2][3]. Before buying, sit in the driver seat and rock side to side, have a mechanic check the rear subframe for rust, and ask for proof that recall 09V169 was done and check the VIN to see if 08V521 applies[4][5]. Murano years from 2010 on have far fewer complaints on file, so if your budget allows, they are worth a look[6]. Fuel costs run about $4,100 to $4,350 a year by EPA's estimate, on premium fuel[7][14].
