2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser: problems, recalls and fuel economy
The 2007 FJ Cruiser has 593 owner complaints on file with NHTSA, far more than any other model year of this SUV[1][2]. It also has 8 recalls, so check that the recall work was done before you buy[2].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 593 complaints for this model year[1]. Of those, 15 mention a crash[1], 5 a fire[1] and 9 an injury[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component.
| Component group | Complaints |
|---|---|
| Structure[4] | 238 |
| Unknown or other[5] | 80 |
| Suspension[6] | 78 |
| Visibility[7] | 77 |
| Brakes[8] | 72 |
| Power train[9] | 51 |
We read a small sample of complaint texts for the biggest groups. Here is what owners describe.
- Structure. In a sample of 12 texts, 9 describe cracking, ripping or bulging sheet metal in the inner fenders and engine bay[4]. Some owners say Toyota's help was limited or denied. Two texts in the sample are about chipping paint[4]. The median mileage at failure for this group is 59,500[4].
- Brakes. In a sample of 12 texts, 8 describe the brakes going briefly dead or unresponsive after a bump or rough patch while braking[8]. Owners say letting off the pedal and pressing again brings them back. Two others describe the brakes releasing when backing down a hill[8]. The median mileage at failure is 55,000[8].
- Suspension. In a sample of 12 texts, 7 describe frame rust or corrosion, in some cases with parts coming loose[6]. Three describe noise from the rear end, such as a wheel bearing or differential[6]. The median mileage at failure is 125,000[6].
- Visibility. All 12 texts in the sample describe windshield chips or cracks from small stones, often early in ownership[7]. The median mileage at failure for this group is only 3,450[7].
The power train group has 51 complaints, fewer than structure, suspension, visibility and brakes[9]. We did not read a text sample for it, so we say nothing about what those complaints describe.
Recalls
NHTSA lists 8 recalls for this model year[2]. Newest first:
- Seat heater accessory (16V396). Recalled in 2016 for aftermarket seat heaters with a copper strand element. The wiring can be damaged when the seat cushion is squeezed. It can short circuit and raise the risk of fire. Dealers disconnect the heaters and refund the price of the accessory[10].
- Seat heater accessory (14V743). Recalled in 2014 for the same kind of aftermarket heater. Damaged wiring could short and burn the seat, with a risk of injury. Dealers disconnect the heaters and refund the price. The recall was expected to begin in January 2015[11].
- Auxiliary driving lamps (13V163). Covers about 208,000 vehicles[12] with Toyota's bumper-mounted auxiliary lamp kit. With the high beams on, the lights are too bright and can glare at oncoming drivers, which raises crash risk. Toyota replaces the 55 watt bulbs with 35 watt bulbs for free[12].
- Front seat belt anchor (13V098). Covers about 209,000 vehicles[13]. The front seat belt retractors are mounted in the rear access door panels. Repeated hard door slamming can crack a panel, and the retractor could come loose, which raises injury risk in a crash. Toyota planned to notify owners about the repair starting in late May 2013[13].
- Tire load label (10V036). Covers about 153,418 vehicles[14] sold without the correct load capacity labels. A driver could overload the vehicle, which raises crash risk. Dealers mail or install the corrected label for free[14].
- Tire load label (10V035). Covers about 271,417 vehicles[15] sold without the required load capacity labels. The fact lists no specific consequence beyond failing the standard. Dealers mail or install the corrected label for free and correct the owner's manual[15].
- Tire load label (09V223). Covers 27,080 vehicles[16] with missing or inaccurate load capacity labels. Overloading raises crash risk. Toyota sends a new label to install over the old one for free[16].
- Tire bead damage (06V235). Covers about 9,434 vehicles[17] with certain Bridgestone Dueler or Dunlop Grandtrek tires. The inner bead may be damaged, which can cause a sidewall bulge and air loss, and possibly loss of control. Dealers inspect all five tires, including the spare, and replace affected ones for free[17].
Fuel economy
All three EPA ratings are for a 4.0L 6-cylinder engine that runs on premium fuel[3][18][19].
| Version | City / highway / combined MPG | Est. annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|
| 2WD, automatic 5-speed[3] | 17 / 21 / 18 | $4,550 |
| 4WD, automatic 5-speed[18] | 15 / 19 / 17 | $4,850 |
| 4WD, manual 6-speed[19] | 15 / 18 / 16 | $5,150 |
EPA's fuel cost uses its current fuel price assumptions, not prices when the car was new.
Safety ratings
NHTSA gives the 4-door RWD/AWD version 3 stars for rollover, with a rollover risk of 26.7%[20].
Engine and size
The EPA ratings list a 4.0L 6-cylinder engine[3]. These dimensions are Canadian-market specifications for the 2-door SUV 4WD variant and can differ slightly from US models[21].
How 2007 compares with other years
Show the numbers
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2007 | 593 | 8 |
| 2008 | 124 | 9 |
| 2009 | 7 | 10 |
| 2010 | 66 | 10 |
| 2011 | 23 | 6 |
| 2012 | 41 | 4 |
| 2013 | 23 | 4 |
| 2014 | 30 | 5 |
The 2007 model year stands out for complaints. It has 593[2], compared with 124 for 2008[2], 66 for 2010[2] and 41 for 2012[2]. No other year has more than 124[2]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, so part of this may reflect how many were sold.
Recalls tell a different story. 2007 has 8, while 2009 and 2010 have 10 each and 2008 has 9[2]. So 2007 is not the model year with the most recalls.
Should you buy a used 2007 FJ Cruiser?
The complaint record is heavy, and it centers on structure, brakes, frame rust and windshields. Complaints are unverified, but in the texts we read, the same themes repeat[4][6][7][8]. If you look at one, have a mechanic inspect the engine bay sheet metal and the frame, and test the brakes over rough pavement. Ask for proof that the recall work was done, especially the seat belt anchor recall[13]. Fuel economy is modest at 16 to 18 combined MPG on premium fuel[3][18][19].
