CarBrief

NHTSA has 587 owner complaints and one recall on file for the 2014 Honda CR-V[1][2]. The recall is for a fuel pump that can fail and stall the engine, and dealers replace it free[3].

Most reported problems

Owners filed 587 complaints with NHTSA[1]. Of those, 36 mention a crash, 7 a fire and 34 injuries, and 3 report deaths[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one component[1].

We read a small sample of complaint texts in four groups. This is what owners describe in that sample, not a count of all owners.

Tires and electrical: a warning light that will not behave. Each of the 12 tire texts we read describes the tire pressure warning light coming on or staying on, and many say the pressure was checked and looked fine[10]. The same story shows up in 11 of the 12 electrical texts we read[8]. Several texts describe a new car, and owners say dealer resets did not hold. One text says a dealer fix cleared it. The tires group has a median mileage at failure of 650[10] and the electrical group 8,832[8].

Engine: noise and hesitation. In a sample of engine complaints we read, 7 of 12 describe a grinding or rattling noise for a second or two when starting the car, mostly in cold weather and at low mileage[6]. Another 4 of 12 describe a delay or hesitation when pressing the accelerator from a stop[6]. The engine group has a median mileage at failure of 30,000[6]. It also lists 6 crashes, 3 fires and 3 injuries[6].

Power train: shifting and drive problems. In the power train texts we read, 6 of 12 describe shifting trouble, such as sticking in a gear, jerking or slipping out of gear[9]. Another 3 of 12 describe all-wheel-drive or rear differential trouble, and 2 of 12 describe vibration at highway speed[9]. The median mileage at failure is 43,000[9].

Speed control and air bags. These are smaller groups, but a large share of them mention crashes or injuries. Speed control has 36 complaints with 13 crashes and 7 injuries[12]. Air bags has 32 complaints with 17 crashes, 23 injuries and 2 deaths[13]. We did not read the texts for these groups, so we cannot say what owners describe.

Recalls

NHTSA lists one recall for this model year[2].

Fuel economy

Both versions use a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine with an Automatic 5-spd and run on regular fuel[4][14].

Version City / highway / combined MPG EPA yearly fuel cost
2WD (front-wheel drive)[4] 23 / 30 / 26 $2,600
4WD (all-wheel drive)[14] 22 / 29 / 25 $2,700

The EPA cost uses its current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new.

Safety ratings

NHTSA gives the 2014 CR-V 5 stars overall, 5 stars in the frontal test and 5 stars in the side test[5][15]. Rollover is 4 stars, with a rollover risk of 17.4%[5][15]. The ratings are the same for the 4WD and front-wheel-drive versions[5][15].

Engine and size

The 2.4L 4-cylinder is rated at 185 hp[16]. Dimensions below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.

The 2014 model year has 587 complaints and 1 recall[2]. Seven model years in the NHTSA list have more complaints: 2007 (887), 2008 (962), 2015 (672), 2017 (1,776), 2018 (2,160), 2019 (1,106) and 2023 (633)[2]. The neighbors are 2013 with 382 complaints and 2 recalls, and 2015 with 672 complaints and 3 recalls[2].

On recalls, only 2001 also shows 1[2]. Every other year from 1997 to 2026 shows 2 or more[2]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, so they say little about how common a problem is.

Should you buy a used 2014 Honda CR-V?

The model year has 5 stars overall in NHTSA tests[5][15] and one recall[2]. In the small samples we read, a tire pressure warning light came up in all 12 tire texts and 11 of 12 electrical texts[10][8]. Ask the seller whether it has been acting up. Also ask whether the fuel pump recall work was done, since a failed pump can stall the engine[3]. This page covers complaints and recalls only, so a pre-purchase inspection is still a good idea.

Complaints submitted to NHTSA by owners; unverified reports, one complaint can name several components. Complaint counts are not normalized by sales; compare years of the same model, not different models. EPA annual fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new. Horsepower is the rating listed for EPA test vehicles. Dimensions are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.
