2010 Honda Odyssey: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 255 owner complaints on file for the 2010 Honda Odyssey, and the engine, structure and brakes groups have the most[1][2][3][4]. It has one recall, for a fuel pump cover that can leak fuel[5].
Most reported problems
These are owner complaints sent to NHTSA. They are unverified, and one complaint can name more than one part. Of the 255 on file[1], 11 mention a crash and 8 a fire, and 25 injuries are reported[1]. No deaths are reported[1].
Here are the named groups with the most complaints.
- Engine, 56 complaints. 5 fires and 1 injury are reported[2]. The median mileage at failure is 98,838[2].
- Structure, 54 complaints. No crashes are reported, but 10 injuries are[3]. The median mileage at failure is 83,000[3].
- Brakes, 42 complaints. 6 crashes and 7 injuries are reported[4]. The median mileage at failure is 29,250, the lowest of the top groups[4].
- Electrical system, 31 complaints. 3 fires are reported[8]. The median mileage at failure is 73,500[8].
- Power train, 23 complaints. 2 crashes are reported[9]. The median mileage at failure is 48,000[9].
- Fuel and propulsion, 15 complaints, and speed control, 13 complaints. Speed control has 2 crashes and 4 injuries[10][11].
What owners describe. We read a small sample of complaint texts for four of these groups. These are themes in that sample, not a count of all owners.
- Engine. In the 12 engine complaints we read, 2 describe oil use between changes, 2 describe engine failure with seized camshafts, and 3 describe the engine stalling or losing power while driving[2]. 2 of them point to the cylinder deactivation system[2].
- Brakes. In the 12 brake complaints we read, 6 describe a soft pedal or a pedal that sinks to the floor[4]. In 2, the pedal went low enough that the driver's foot touched the accelerator[4]. In 3, a repair such as a new master cylinder or resurfaced rotors did not hold[4].
- Structure. In the 12 structure complaints we read, 4 describe a rear sliding door that would not latch or close[3]. 3 describe a sliding door closing on a hand or fingers[3].
- Electrical. In the 12 electrical complaints we read, 4 describe warning lights, gauges or the whole dash going dark or flashing[8]. 3 describe the anti-theft alarm, door locks or power controls failing, and 2 describe water collecting in tail lamps[8].
We have no complaint texts for power train, speed control or fuel and propulsion, so we cannot say what owners describe there.
Recalls
NHTSA lists one recall for this model year.
- Remedy pending
Fuel pump strainer cover (14V112). Announced 2014-03-14[5]. It covers 886,815 potentially affected vehicles, 2005 through 2010 Odysseys built from June 23, 2004 through September 4, 2010[5]. The strainer cover on the fuel pump can deteriorate and let fuel leak out. A fuel leak raises the risk of a fire[5]. Honda planned an interim letter to owners for May 2014 because the permanent parts were not yet available[5]. A second notice went out October 6, 2014, when the remedy became available[5]. Vehicles that are leaking from the cover get a replacement original cover. Every vehicle, including those given the interim repair, is to get an improved cover when those covers are available[5]. Our data does not say whether the improved cover is available today. Owners can contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009[5].
Fuel economy
EPA lists two ratings for the 3.5L 6-cylinder engine with a 5-speed automatic and front-wheel drive[12][7]. Both use regular gas[12][7].
| EPA rating | City | Highway | Combined | Est. annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First listing[12] | 16 | 23 | 18 | $3,700 |
| Second listing[7] | 17 | 25 | 20 | $3,350 |
Our data does not say why the two listings differ. EPA's annual fuel cost uses its current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the van was new[12][7].
Safety ratings
NHTSA lists no 5-Star Safety Ratings for the 4 DR FWD version of this model year[13]. It is shown as not rated[13].
Engine and size
The EPA test car list entry for the 2010 Odyssey shows 241 to 244 hp depending on version[14]. The 3.5L engine size is listed in the fuel economy data[12].
These dimensions are Canadian-market specifications from Transport Canada, so they can differ slightly from US vans. They are converted to inches and pounds.

The 2010 model year has 255 complaints and 1 recall[6]. Next to the years around it, the numbers look like this[6].
| Model year | Complaints | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2009[6] | 198 | 3 |
| 2010 | 255 | 1 |
| 2011 | 235 | 5 |
| 2012 | 245 | 5 |
| 2013 | 210 | 6 |
Of these five years, 2010 has the most complaints and the fewest recalls. Across all Odyssey years in the data, only 2001 also has a single recall, and only 1995, 1996 and 2027 show none[6]. The 2005 through 2008 model years have 499 to 830 complaints each[6]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many vans were sold, so use them to compare Odyssey years with each other only.
Should you buy a used 2010 Odyssey?
The record is mixed. The complaint count is modest next to the 2005 through 2008 years, and the model year has one recall[6][5]. The biggest groups are engine, structure and brakes, and the brake complaints stand out for crashes and for failing early[2][3][4]. In the samples we read, owners describe soft brake pedals, rear sliding doors that do not latch, and oil use[4][3][2]. Ask a seller whether the fuel pump cover work was done and ask for repair records on brakes and sliding doors, because our data cannot tell you the condition of any one van.
Frequently asked questions
- What are the most common problems with the 2010 Honda Odyssey?
- By complaint count, the engine group leads with 56 complaints, then structure with 54 and brakes with 42[2][3][4]. In the samples we read, owners describe oil use and stalling, sliding door latch trouble, and soft brake pedals[2][3][4].
- Does the 2010 Honda Odyssey have any recalls?
- NHTSA lists one, 14V112, for a fuel pump strainer cover that can deteriorate and leak fuel, which raises the risk of a fire[5]. Honda's notice says leaking vehicles get a replacement original cover and all vehicles get an improved cover when available[5].
