2007 Honda Odyssey: problems, recalls and fuel economy
Owners filed 830 complaints about the 2007 Honda Odyssey with NHTSA, and brakes are the biggest group[1][2]. Four recalls apply, so check that each one was done before you buy[3][4][5][6].
Most reported problems
NHTSA lists 830 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Of those, 38 mention a crash, 15 a fire and 71 an injury[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified reports from owners, and one complaint can name more than one part.

Brakes. Brakes have the most complaints and the most crash mentions[2]. In a sample of 12 brake complaints we read, 11 describe a soft or spongy pedal or weak stopping, often from when the van was new[2]. Five of the 12 mention dealer visits that bled the system, replaced a part or found nothing, and the owner still described a problem[2].
Structure. This group has the most injuries of any group, 26 from 134 complaints[9]. In a sample of 12, eight describe a sliding door or power liftgate that trapped or closed on a person, or a rear hatch that would not stay up[9].
Steering. In a sample of 12, five describe power steering pump noise or a loss of assist at low speed, and two describe shaking under braking that owners link to the rotors[10].
Engine. In a sample of 12, five describe an air conditioning condenser or radiator damaged by road debris, with repair bills that owners say warranty did not cover[11]. Two describe engine pinging[11]. Engine complaints include 5 fire mentions[11].
Electrical. There are fewer electrical complaints, but they include 10 fire mentions, the most of any group[13].
Recalls
Four recalls are on file for this model year, newest first.
- Fuel pump cover (14V112). Dated March 14, 2014[3]. The strainer cover on the fuel pump can wear down and let fuel leak out, which raises the risk of a fire. It covers certain 2005 to 2010 Odysseys, with 886,815 vehicles potentially affected[3]. Honda first sent an interim letter, then a second notice on October 6, 2014[3] when the fix became available. Leaking vehicles get a replacement cover, and all vehicles get an improved cover when available[3].
- Unexpected braking (13V500). Dated November 1, 2013[4]. Software and system parts in the Software and system parts in the Vehicle Safety Assist System (VSA) can apply the brakes without warning, and without turning on the brake lights. can apply the brakes without warning, and without turning on the brake lights. That raises the risk of being hit from behind. It covers 344,187 vehicles from model years 2007 and 2008[4]. Parts were not due until spring 2014, and the recall began on April 29, 2014[4].
- Brake master cylinder seal (10V504). Dated October 22, 2010[5]. A rubber seal in the brake master cylinder can dry out if brake fluid without certain polymers is used. Brake fluid can then leak slowly, the pedal can feel different and braking can get worse, which raises the risk of a crash. It covers 471,820 vehicles, including certain 2005 to 2007 Odysseys[5]. Dealers replace the seal free of charge[5].
- Air in brake pump (10V098). Dated March 16, 2010[6]. Air can enter the stability system pump each time the engine starts. With no brake service over months or years, enough air can build up to give a soft pedal and affect braking, which raises the risk of a crash. It covers 412,000 vehicles from model years 2007 and 2008[6]. Dealers remove the air and add sealant and caps free of charge. The recall began on May 3, 2010[6].
Before buying, ask for proof that each recall was completed. Honda owners can call Honda at 1-800-999-1009[3][4][5][6].
Fuel economy
EPA lists two ratings for the 3.5L 6-cylinder, 5-speed automatic, front-wheel drive Odyssey that runs on regular gas[16][8].
| Rating | City | Highway | Combined | Annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First listing[16] | 16 MPG | 23 MPG | 18 MPG | $3,700 |
| Second listing[8] | 17 MPG | 24 MPG | 19 MPG | $3,550 |
EPA's yearly cost uses its current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the van was new[16][8].
Safety ratings
NHTSA has not given the 2007 Odyssey (4 DR FWD) a 5-Star Safety Rating[17].
Engine and size
These sizes come from Canadian-market specifications, so US models can differ slightly[18][19][20].

The 2007 Odyssey has 830 complaints and 4 recalls[7]. The 2005 model year also has 830 complaints, but 8 recalls[7]. Four years have more complaints than 2007: 2002 (960), 2003 (914), 2018 (1,005) and 2019 (991)[7].
Nearby years have fewer. 2006 has 703 complaints, 2008 has 499 and 2009 has 198[7]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for how many vans were sold, so use them as a rough guide only.
Should you buy a used 2007 Odyssey?
This model year has a large complaint file, with brakes at the top[1][2]. Three of the four recalls involve brakes and one involves fuel leaks and fire risk[3][4][5][6]. If you are shopping, get proof that all four recalls were done and test the brake pedal on a long drive. Check that the sliding doors and liftgate work smoothly[9]. Complaints are unverified and the counts are not adjusted for sales, so they show where owners ran into trouble but not how likely a problem is for your van.
