2007 Honda Ridgeline: problems, recalls and fuel economy
NHTSA has 160 owner complaints for the 2007 Honda Ridgeline, and air bags are the most-named component group[1][2]. The model year also has 8 recalls on file, so check the VIN for open ones before you buy or keep one[3].
Reported problems
NHTSA lists 160 owner complaints for this model year[1]. Six mention a crash, 5 a fire and 5 an injury[1]. No deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one part, so the groups below overlap.
| Component group | Complaints | Median mileage at failure |
|---|---|---|
| Air bags[2] | 74 | 81,500 |
| Structure[5] | 29 | 128,000 |
| Electrical system[6] | 17 | 73,464 |
| Engine[7] | 13 | 119,210 |
| Power train[8] | 12 | 87,263 |
| Visibility[9] | 10 | 57,000 |
| Brakes[10] | 6 | 76,718 |
Air bags. In a sample of air bag complaints we read, owners describe being told that Takata-related recall parts were not available yet, even though they had no failure[2]. A few describe air bags that did not deploy in a crash. In two of those, a technician reportedly blamed a short circuit from a faulty ground wire[2]. Others describe a warning light that stayed on[2]. Air bag complaints include 5 crashes and 4 injuries[2].
Structure. In the structure sample, some owners describe a badly rusted rear frame or subframe, including fuel tank straps or a tank support giving way[5]. Others describe pieces coming loose at speed, such as a roof piece or the third brake light panel[5]. The recall below covers the frame corrosion issue[11].
Electrical. This group has 5 fires among its 17 complaints[6]. In the sample we read, owners describe a melted wiring harness for the heater or A/C blower, with smoke or a fire risk[6]. Recall 10V001 covers a related blower wiring connector[12].
Engine. In the engine sample, owners describe radiator failures where coolant mixed with transmission fluid or the engine overheated[7]. Some describe a spark plug breaking or ejecting with serious engine damage, and some describe heavy oil use[7].
Recalls
NHTSA lists 8 recalls for the 2007 model year[3]. Some cover only certain vehicles, by build date or by where the truck was sold or registered[11][13][14][12]. Ask a dealer to check the VIN to see which ones apply to a specific truck. Newest first:
- Frame corrosion and fuel tank (22V430). Road salt can corrode the frame where the fuel tank bands attach, and the tank could come loose and leak fuel. A leak near a spark raises fire risk. It covers certain 2006 to 2014 Ridgelines sold or ever registered in 22 states and the District of Columbia[11]. Dealers inspect and repair the rear frame as needed for free, and Honda may offer to repurchase the truck depending on the damage[11].
- Passenger air bag inflator (19V501). Replacement inflators can explode after long exposure to humidity and heat. Metal fragments could cause serious injury or death. Dealers replace the inflator for free[15].
- Driver air bag inflator (19V500). Replacement inflators of this kind can explode for the same reason, with the same risk. Dealers replace the inflator for free[16].
- Replacement driver inflator (19V182). Trucks that got a replacement driver inflator in an earlier recall, or a module with the same inflator type, may have a manufacturing error. The inflator could explode in a crash. Dealers swap it for an alternate inflator for free[17].
- Passenger air bag inflator, regional (17V029). Inflators could rupture after long exposure to humidity and temperature cycles. Metal fragments could cause serious injury or death. It applies to trucks sold or registered in listed regions. Dealers replace the inflator for free[13].
- Passenger air bag inflator, regional (16V344). Same kind of rupture risk. It applies to listed regions. Dealers replace the inflator for free[14].
- Driver air bag inflator (16V061). A dual-stage driver air bag could take in moisture, and over time the inflator could rupture. Dealers replace the inflator for free[18].
- Blower wiring connector (10V001). A wiring connector for the heating and A/C blower motor sits under the passenger side of the instrument panel, where a passenger's feet could kick it. The terminal could overheat and melt the wire insulation, and a short circuit could start a fire. It covers certain 2006 and 2007 trucks built between January 17, 2005 and June 7, 2006[12]. Dealers inspect the connector, replace it if damaged and add a protective cover to every truck for free[12].
Some owners in our complaint sample say repair parts were not available when they were notified[2][6]. If a recall is still open on a truck, ask the dealer when the part will be in.
Fuel economy
EPA rates the Ridgeline 4WD with the 3.5L 6-cylinder and Automatic 5-spd at 15 MPG city, 20 highway and 17 combined[4]. EPA estimates annual fuel cost at $3,950[4]. That estimate uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from when the truck was new.
Safety ratings
In NHTSA's 5-Star ratings, the 4 DR AWD version earned 4 stars for rollover[19]. NHTSA puts its rollover risk at 14.3%[19]. Our data has no other star ratings for this model year.
Engine and size
EPA lists a 3.5L 6-cylinder engine with Automatic 5-spd and four-wheel or all-wheel drive[4]. The size figures below are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US trucks[20].

The 2007 model year has 160 complaints and 8 recalls[3]. Only 2006, with 242 complaints, is higher among the 2006 to 2014 years listed[3]. The 2008 year has 143, and 2009 through 2014 each have 45 or fewer[3]. Across every year in the list, 2007 ranks sixth for complaints[3]. The years with more are 2017 (345), 2006 (242), 2019 (237), 2020 (169) and 2018 (162)[3].
For recalls, 2007 has fewer than 2006 (12), 2012 (11), 2019 (11), 2011 (10) and 2010 (9)[3]. It has the same count as 2008, 2009, 2017 and 2020, which each have 8[3]. Complaint counts are not adjusted for sales, so treat these as a rough guide.
Should you buy a used 2007 Ridgeline?
The record is mixed. The air bag inflator recalls and the frame corrosion recall are the items to settle first, and the VIN check shows which apply[11][15][18]. If the truck has lived where roads are salted, have a mechanic look at the rear frame and fuel tank mounts, since owners in our sample describe serious rust there[5][11]. Ask for proof that open recalls were done, including the blower wiring fix[12]. The EPA fuel cost of $3,950 a year is worth budgeting for[4].
