2008 Jeep Liberty: problems, recalls and fuel economy

Updated October 23, 2026. Based on NHTSA and EPA records. Published by Humblebee.

The 2008 Jeep Liberty has 541 owner complaints on file with NHTSA[1], with electrical faults the largest group and owners describing gas spraying back out at the pump[2][3][4]. All 4 of its recalls come with a free dealer repair, so check that each one has been done before you buy[5][6][7][8][9].

Most reported problems

NHTSA has 541 complaints from owners of the 2008 Liberty[1]. Of those, 11 mention a crash, 4 a fire and 19 injuries, and no deaths are reported[1]. These are unverified owner reports, and one complaint can name more than one part.

Component group Complaints Median miles at failure
Electrical system[2] 124 90,570
Fuel system, gasoline[3] 95 40,000
Structure[11] 85 58,000
Fuel/propulsion system[4] 61 63,500
Unknown or other[12] 54 100,000
Visibility[13] 47 50,000
Air bags[14] 43 100,000
Visibility/wiper[15] 41 87,050

Electrical system. This is the biggest group, with 124 complaints, 3 crashes, 1 fire and 7 injuries[2]. In a sample of complaints we read, owners describe dash lights, warning lights or warning chimes that flicker or go off for no clear reason. Some say the horn, wipers, washers or alarm switched on by themselves while driving. A few tie the electrical trouble to shifting problems or a loss of engine power. Several owners describe trips to the dealer where parts were swapped or the fault could not be found, and the problem came back[2].

Fuel spraying back at the pump. Two fuel groups stand out, with 95 complaints for the gasoline fuel system[3] and 61 for the fuel/propulsion system[4]. In the samples we read from both groups, owners describe nearly the same thing. When the pump nozzle clicks off, gasoline spits or gushes back out of the filler onto the car, the ground or the person filling it[3][4]. A couple of owners say it is worse in cold weather, and a couple say a dealer told them the tank or a valve needed replacing[4]. One owner in the sample describes a gas smell inside the cabin[3]. None of the recalls in our data covers this problem[6][7][8][9].

Structure. There are 85 complaints in this group, with no crashes, fires or injuries reported[11]. In the sample we read, owners describe the Sky Slider roof not closing or sealing, coming off its track, or making loud wind noise at highway speed. Two describe rain leaking in near the top of the rear liftgate and soaking the carpet. Two complain about interior plastic that scratches or discolors[11].

Air bags. This group is smaller, with 43 complaints, but it lists 6 crashes and 11 injuries, more than any other group[14]. We did not read a sample of these complaints, so we cannot say what owners describe.

Visibility and wipers. There are 47 visibility complaints[13] and 41 for visibility/wiper, with 1 fire[15]. One recall covered wiper motors on this model year (see below)[7].

Recalls

NHTSA lists 4 recalls for the 2008 Liberty[5]. Each one has a free fix at a dealer[6][7][8][9]. If you are buying used, confirm that each one was done.

Fuel economy

Every 2008 Liberty in the EPA data has a 3.7L 6-cylinder engine that runs on regular gas[16][10][17][18]. Ratings vary a little by drive type and transmission.

Version City / highway / combined MPG EPA annual fuel cost
2WD, Automatic 4-spd[16] 16 / 22 / 18 $3,700
2WD, Manual 6-spd[10] 16 / 22 / 19 $3,550
4WD, Automatic 4-spd[17] 15 / 21 / 17 $3,950
4WD, Manual 6-spd[18] 16 / 22 / 18 $3,700

The 2WD manual is the most efficient at 19 mpg combined[10], and the 4WD automatic uses the most fuel at 17 mpg combined[17]. The annual cost figures use EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not prices from 2008.

Safety ratings

NHTSA gives the 2008 Liberty 4-door (RWD and 4WD) 3 stars for rollover, with a rollover risk of 22.8%[19].

Engine and size

The EPA lists one engine for the 2008 Liberty, a 3.7L 6-cylinder[16][10][17][18]. Size figures below are for the 4-door 4WD Liberty variant listed as Sport/North Edition/Limit and come from Canadian-market specifications, so US models can differ slightly[20].

NHTSA data lists complaints and recalls for six Liberty model years[5].

2002 1,808 8
2008 541 4
2009 108 0
2010 197 2
2011 181 3
2012 385 2

Among these years, 2008 has the second highest number of complaints and recalls, behind only 2002[5]. The 2009 model has the fewest, with 108 complaints and no recalls[5]. Counts are not adjusted for how many cars were sold, so a year that sold more can collect more complaints. Our data does not cover 2003 through 2007.

Should you buy a used 2008 Liberty?

The 2008 Liberty has more complaints than any later year in our data, with electrical faults as the biggest group[5][2]. Owners also describe fuel spraying back out at the pump, and no recall in our data addresses it[3][4][6][7][8][9]. All 4 recalls have a free dealer fix, and you should confirm each was done[6][7][8][9]. Expect about 17 to 19 mpg combined depending on the version[16][10][17]. If you want a Liberty with fewer reported problems, the 2009 model year has far fewer complaints in NHTSA's records[5].

Complaints submitted to NHTSA by owners; unverified reports, one complaint can name several components. Complaint counts are not normalized by sales; compare years of the same model, not different models. EPA annual fuel cost uses EPA's current fuel price assumptions, not the price when the car was new. Horsepower is the rating listed for EPA test vehicles. Dimensions are Canadian-market specifications and can differ slightly from US models.
